Senate republicans don't care about anything other than getting Barrett confirmed. Confirming judges is the only thing the senate has done efficiently under mcconnell, and only while trump was president.
The legislature is a load of bullshit anyway, because the peasants get to pick who's in it. In the republican mind the courts can just do all the legislating, and they've been stacking those up nicely, according to the wishes of the oligarchs.

I believe they know their cause is lost. Passing a stimulus instead of nominating a justice would be the courageous thing to do.

Gorsuch and Kavanaugh - to a lesser extent - may prove to be more moderate than originally contemplated. Roberts has shown himself to be quite fond of stare decisis.

Check out the first 1:10 of this video of Sheldon Whitehouse explaining to republicans that if they push ahead with doing things "just because they can" (with regard to Barrett, but it applies generally) they'll have zero credibility to argue against the dems doing the same if they take the presidency and senate. It's good to hear it being said to their faces, but it kind of relies on republicans caring about credibility.
