I'll go with Hendrix by a landslide.

I'm not into having to pick though, such talents are one in the same - all worthy of high praise.

I'll pick David Gilmour as my favorite player, with Johnny Greenwood coming a close 2nd

I'm surprised slash wasn't mentioned more. Dimebag Darrel was great too. Personally I like Buckethead. But Hendrix is definitely a landslide #1...

Not a single Jazz or Classical guitarist mentioned. How about:

Django Reinhart
Joe Pass
Les Paul

How about guitarists in world music ?

Perhaps the thread should have been best Rock or Blues guitarist, otherwise it's too difficult to compare.

#1 Jeff Waters [Annihilator].
#2 Dave Mustaine [Megadeth].

These lists also tend to look too much on past guitarists and too harshly on guitarists of the last 10/15 years.

Yes. Most definately.

Jeff and Dave, to me, could out-play Tony Iommi and Jimmy Paige and Angus Young and many of the others mentioned. The skill involved in Jeff and Dave's G-Tar work is that of selling your soul to the Devil for the music that we hear kind of stuff. And every real music fan knows that the Devil has the best taste in music.

darnit, I forgot Jack White &

this is so much tougher :eek:than those silly rap questions

really? you're putting jack white with the likes of these other guys?

my favourite guitarists are probably eric clapton, randy rhoads and dimebag darrell. hendrix was good in his time. he's all hype. whle being a fantastic guitarist, his catalogue isnt that big and there is players that can play circles around him. 5 stars for being an inspiration to everybody after him though.

I agree. I find it interesting that a lot of people are saying "Hendrix by a landslide". No disrespect meant for him, but what exceptional talent or quality did he possess that makes it a "landslide"??? You mean he is so vastly superior to anyone else who ever lived that the question becomes inarguable? I mean, I love Hendrix but I just don't see it that way. I often wonder if he hadn't died so young if he would still be the mystical legend he has become.

Torn & Frayed.
Chuck Berry

Van Halen pioneered all the shred guitar techniques. But It was Jimmy Hendrix who initiated it in the 60. I think both of them are my favourites

I went with Jimmy Page, since Stevie Ray Vaughan, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, weren't available. I love Hendrix, but he was really sloppy live (I've only heard live recordings, I've never seen him) and is overrated.

Well I was listening to Death Alley Driver by Rainbow and right now I'll go with Richie Blackmore for today. It'll probably change tomorrow depending on who I'm listening to.

SRV, Hendrix, Duane Allman and Steve Gains from Skynyrd will always top my list. You do however have to give credit to alot of players that never get mentioned. Chet Atkins and Roy Clark did some amazing work in the country field. I always thought that Brian May from Queen was very underrated. And how can you forget about guys like B.B. and Albert King, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley and whole bunch of blues greats.

Jeff Beck from that list. Jimmy Page is the second worst on that list behind Keith Richards. But I will admit that Jimmy Page has the best song stealing ability out of all of them.
