My top 5, in no particular order:

Lynsey Buckingham

Eric Clapton

Joe Satriani

Paul Gilbert

John Williams

No Carlos Santana? No Peter Green? :) There will be lots of great guitarists missing from this list, and there's lots on it. Although, ask the great guitarists this question and the answer will be Hendrix is 'The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time'

Santana should definitely be on here. There should be an 'other' option.

With so many diverse styles out there, and the bias of personal preference there really is no way to decide.

Two of my favorites are in that list, but that doesn't mean one of them is the greatest guitarist of all time. :2 cents:

solid list, but what about Jeff Healey... Joe Satriani... Stanley Jordan... the Edge... I'd even include John (DB) Mayer if you just listen to the tunes instead of what he says when he's not performing...

I think Clapton has to be nudging higher on that list...

hell, I'd kick back for a few hours listening to any of them. A few bars of several pieces from any are enough to make me wish I'd spent more trime actually trying to do more then learn a lick or two in school... Where's that old guitar again...?

For having the greatest impact on the guitar....Jimi Hendrix

For the greatest body of work...Eric Clapton

For the most innovation...Steve Vai

This is one of those lists that is impossible to do, cause no one is THE BEST...

Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Randy Rhoades, Paul Gilbert, Ritchie Blackmore, Malmsteen, Billy Gibbons, Frank Marino and Dimebag are on my list it's too hard to choose just one.

It's much easier to assemble a list of great guitarists rather than separate one from all the others, but even making a list is hard to do. Some of my favorites, in no particular order:

Steve Gaines, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, George Harrison, Duane Allman, Mark Knopfler, Brian May, Frank Zappa, Tom Morello, Jerry Cantrell, Les Paul, and Vernon Reid.

My list could go on and on, these are just ones that popped into my head first.

Watch that documentary headbangers journey.
