As great as I'm sure he was, there are tonnes of amazing guitarists, even young kids, posting videos every day on youtube/etc. The thing is, being an amazingly technical guitarist doesn't always equal good music. That is why they are playing to themselves or infront of a webcam instead of releasing albums. There is far more to it than technical skill.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. But that doesn't make what he was playing any less impressive. :)

Guitarist today use far more advanced technology than Hendrix or any of the others did. I think thats the problem with the introduction of newer technologies allowing the musician to make ever more creative sounds is its always going to be difficult to compare those guitarists now with those then.

Another great guitarist ( better than most on that list IMO lol) was John Cippolino of "Quicksilver Messenger Service".

Oh fuck yes!!! :bowdown::thumbsup:

I'd rep you if I could, FOMM!

This is WAY too subjective a question to have any one answer. Clapton is a HORRIBLE heavy metal guitar player, and so folks who don't like the style he plays now would never vote for him, and so on.

This is a better thing to ask "Who's your favorite?" because honestly- it's all opinion.

H

Absolutely right. Totally subjective.

Even Hendrix had a lot of technology behind him. It's how you use the technology (pedals, FX, etc) that make it impressive.

If Hendrix didn't have any pedals, he probably wouldn't be a household name today.

Nowadays we have stuff like tone auto correction, and all kinds of neat little recording tools and applications. It's great. You can get alot of really cool sounds. Pretty much anything you can imagine.

But I think it takes away from the pure musicianship which make the classics so great. Jimi did have his pedals, but not all the crazy stuff that bands have been using lately. And the process of recording has advanced as well.

Still, I wouldn't mind going to some parallel demension where Jimi is still alive... listen to what he'd be doing these days.

That is true, but modern recording techniques have changed quite a bit since then and other tools to create other sounds have become common place (that thing Buckethead uses to make those really distorted sounds for example, I cant remember the name though). I suppose it all depends on how the person sounds live, Hendrix live I always found too sloppy (being to young to have ever seen him live this is on youtube and other places). But I have found that Stevie Ray Vaughan was always (or mostly) pitch perfect when playing live, his version of Little Wing, is far superior to Hendrix's version IMO, yes with Hendrix's version you get the lyrics but you compare them playing the same song live, Vaughan come out tops everytime for me.

I'm not taking anything away from modern players, all I'm saying is the comparisson between old and new isnt exactly fair. But you are correct in 20 years there will be new names on the list; Jack White, the guy from Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss. They'll be up there I'm sure of it.

i think that you should also look at how influencal the guitarist has been, such as clapton and bob dylan inspired jimi hendrix to play, clapton guitars and bob dylan vocals

WOW what a list!!!! dont know what its really asking tho hey!?!?!?! BEST GUITARIST!??!?!? best TECHNICAL OR most influential or best song writer OR fave song writer OR most well know OR even the most hits in a band whom they play!!!!!!
i mean FOR ME my FAVORITE players are:
BUCKETHEAD EASY #1
then (not in order)
Dave Mustaine and any of his lead players
Billy F Gibbons
VAI
SATCH
MALMSTEEN
John 5
Shawn Lane
Jason Becker
Paul Gilbert
Rocky george from SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
Zakk Wylde
Brian May
Randy rhoads
Gary Moore
Jeff Healey

And thats just a list of the guys i actually listen too ! AND a list BY a guitarist who loves shred and NOT just a person who likes music! so i think the first list is NOT good enuff! as it dousnt clearly say what its asking! coz if its asking TECHNICAL BEST then it OR mine would be differant with players like Holdsworth and Al de meola etc etc.....

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Not only do you have to keep in mind what type of music each guitarist plays, but you also have to realize that a lot of them use different guitars too. Some are amazing on an acoustic guitar, but they don't play that well on electric (or vice versa). Or, for instance, take Robert Randolph. Robert Randolph is fucking SICK on guitar, but he doesn't play the same type of guitar as Eric Clapton or Pete Townshend; Robert Randolph plays a steel pedal guitar.

These all time great lists will stay fairly static for a long time. The generations coming through are not listening to or making this type of guitar based music. I once read a biography by a long dead hero of mine and he talked of growing up in a world where jazz was all around him and them in his later years he had to travel a long way to get to an underground room to find it, like it was some kind of criminal activity. It doesn't mean that rock/blues noodling is dead but these "greatest" or "best" titles do have an element of popularity attached to them.

Gore Vidal made a similar point that when asked about the age of great writing, he said it was only possible in the age of great reading. The audience drives it on.

For me the greatest guitarist is the one who gives me the most pleasure. Sorry Julian Bream and John Williams. Step forward Mr Johnny Marr.

Django and if you disagree you are wrong and are hitler's right hand man and kill babies. Ill forgive you since you have Sex Pistols sig and obviously don't know anything about music, but for future references the greatest ever is Django.

Voted Zappa.

bye.

No Carlos Santana? No Peter Green? :) There will be lots of great guitarists missing from this list, and there's lots on it. Although, ask the great guitarists this question and the answer will be Hendrix is 'The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time'

When it comes to sheer speed, there's probably some shredder who is "fastest in the world". And many metal guitarists are technically very skillful.

But there's more to music than just speed and difficulty. As far as Jimi Hendrix goes, the guy was pure show on the guitar - did some amazing stuff. But none of his songs, except Little Wing, are very pleasant to listen to. Mostly acid loudness and overboosted treble. (I'm sure if he would've lived to the 70's things had been different though, cause he had tons of potential and died too young.)

From the list, my vote goes to Jimmy Page and Frank Zappa. The latter is way underrated, he was an incredible guitarist.
But if I could choose freely it would be David Gilmour of Pink Floyd for composing some of the best riffs and solos ever (and also he's a great player). And of course Stevie Ray Vaughan who in my eyes did and played some of the best guitar music ever made.

That's just my :2 cents: though, and even though I enjoy some metal, most of them just shred and play easy riffs very fast. I'm more of a traditional blues guitarist-lover :)
