Jesus man! I will take the opinion of Ray Lewis and not some message board contrarian (that is pretty much your schtick). Did you even watch the game? They (Panthers) allowed the fewest yards in the history of the NFL playoffs. Yes the Cardinals were down to their 3rd string QB but with the play makers that Arizona have they should have been able to muster more than 77 yards with Palmer's jock strap taking snaps. I am not ready to say that Carolina will win the NFC but they have really found chemistry and fought through countless injuries they are becoming a great defense.

Like I said earlier in this thread, I have always kinda liked the Lions, maybe because they are loveable losers is the reason but to not give either team credit is just sour grapes. You must still be reeling from that loss to Panthers earlier this year. The NFC South was a division where teams were beating each other up and injuries played a factor at least for the Panthers and had they been healthy all year and had DeAngelo Williams and Greg Hardy all year they may have ran away with the division that was obviously not the best in the league. But anybody that follows the NFL with any objectivity would know that Carolina deserve to be there and proved it today. Not only did they dominate today, but pounded the two other contenders in the division on their home field when it mattered the most.

The problem with the opinion of former players of most sports turned talking heads is that for the most part with a very few handful of exceptions the players are horrible at in depth analysis and being on the networks just makes it even worse when they have to produce sound bites and entertainment for the masses. It probably comes from them being shoved conventional wisdom into their heads and going on their feelings all their lives and then not being able to step back from it. They are some of the worst people to ever get any meaningful things out of especially when it doesn't pertain to direct on the field tactical issues of their previous position.

For the record I'm not a Lions fan. As far as them beating the Bears I readily acknowledge the Bears were horrible this year.

Anybody that's objective just needs to look at the Panthers stats this year, or even if a person doesn't want to get that in depth with that just face the fact they didn't even have a winning record in one of the worst divisions in football in years. Not that they can't win going foreword because strange things happen in the NFL and any given Sunday with small sample sizes of only a few games, but they were just the least worst team that played the game. Losing Hardy might have stung for them, but every team has injuries, and that's not nearly enough to somehow account for their record this year. It's not like the Panthers were extraordinarily unlucky this year either. It's also not like the Arizona offense was the only one that was bad. The defense and special teams played terrible. Unusual for them, and it's not really the Panthers doing that by being so good they enforced their will on them. Arizona was just horrible.

Ok. Any QB that gets a start in the NFL is capable of making plays or he wouldn't be there in the first place. You have made excuses for why the Cardinals didn't fare better due to their QB situation while at the same time discounting the importance of a Greg Hardy throughout the season. Carolina's defense was in shambles earlier in the year except for a superstar like Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis stepping it up. The Seahawks made the playoffs with a 7-9 record just a few seasons ago and the Panthers could at least been a .500 team even with the injuries to Newton, Williams and losing key players during the off season. Ties suck and I hate that they couldn't pull the win out AT Cincy (another playoff team) but c'est la vie. I have been watching the NFL for a few years now and I have watched teams get hot at the right time and win playoff games. Carolina had to find chemistry and it just wasn't there earlier in the season. Especially when they had to deal with Cam Newton playing hurt. Carolina lost the majority of their games because Cam wasn't 100 percent and they were trying to find the right chemistry with new receivers and a rookie receiver that will be a pro bowl'r. Anyway, their defense is good and at the right time. We'll see if they can win another game.

The Panthers won a playoff game. I was wrong again. Didn't get to watch it due to travel, but my hat is off to them and their fans. Tough one next week, either in Seattle or Green Bay. With the Panthers resurgent running game and hot defense, anything is possible. I will refrain from any more predictions.

Thanks feller, you're a stand up guy. We all know the Panthers really sucked for a while and the NFC South was just awful but somebody had to win the division and none would have had a great record. What is the division winner supposed to do? Not play and give the playoff spot to a team that has a better record but didn't win the division? That seems to be what some are advocating. BTW it says you live in SW Florida, are you a Bucs fan?

No, grew up a Raiders fan. Lived in Charlotte and Wilmington, NC, for about 25 years total. Was in NC when the Panthers were a twinkle in Jerry Richardson's eye. I just don't like Cam Newton. He epitomizes all that is wrong with college and pro football. He is a phenomenal athlete, has a great smile and gets tons of praise heaped on him. He is an average QB who will never win the big one.

I have no problem with sub-.500 teams getting in the playoffs. They are 2-0. Until it can be shown they are affecting the integrity of the NFL (ha ha), it is what it is. Don't like it? Get better.

I still think that is Jon Casey doesn't shank that kickoff against the Patriots in the SB and that game goes to OT, the Panthers win. Dan Morgan was a stud linebacker who never got full recognition for his ability.

Detroit appeared on its way to its first postseason win since 1991 after taking a 20-7 lead deep into the third quarter, but Tony Romo engineered three straight scoring drives to bring Dallas back on a night in which the Cowboys' offensive stars were mostly held in check by the Lions defense.

With Dez Bryant managing a modest 48 yards on three catches while double covered much of the game and DeMarco Murray held to just 75 yards on 19 carries with a TD. However, Terrance Williams stepped up to help Dallas advance to a match-up with Green Bay next Sunday. He came through with a 76-yard touchdown late in the first half and finished with 92 yards on three catches.

The Cowboys received a boost as well from a controversial call that preceded the game-winning drive. The Lions punted the ball away with 8:10 left following Matthew Stafford's incomplete pass on third down to Brandon Pettigrew, which was initially ruled pass interference on Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens but then overturned by the officiating crew. Officials went so far as to announce the penalty to a chorus of boos. It would have resulted in a Detroit first down, late in the game and with the Lions up by three. Then a wild Dez Bryant appeared for Dallas. Suddenly the flag was picked up without explanation that left everybody confused. Perhaps late fourth quarter penalties against “America’s Team” are strictly verboten by the NFL and Jerry Jones. In any event another disappointing season for the Detroit Lions draws to a close… 58 years and counting since the Lions last championship.

Final score: Dallas 24, Detroit 20

Go Green Bay!

That flag pick up was beyond ridiculous. That was clearly pass interference by my understanding from watching 12 years of pro football.

There was pass interference on the play. The problem was that it was Pettigrew pushing off with his hand on the guys facemask and his arm fully extended. The flag should have never been thrown to begin with or pick it up without making an announcement first.

I may be reading too much into it, but......

ON the game-winning touchdown pass to Williams, notice the reaction Dez Bryant had. The emotional wide receiver either didn't react because he knew the game wasn't over and it would be too early to celebrate OR he was a little pissed that Williams caught the pass that he could have, making Bryant the hero. It is probably the former, but the latter did come to mind.

Bitter 49er fan checking in...

Was hoping Detroit would hang on to that game yesterday, but not surprised that they couldn't.

I think Dallas will have a tough time getting a W in Green Bay, but it will be a great matchup. Divisional games are looking promising for this weekend.

To me Dez Bryant's actions were "worse than the pass-interference call. You can debate the pass-interference call all you want. But the no helmet rule is plain and simple. And for an official to not have the courage to call it against “America’s Team” is outrageous. Dez Bryant was not on the field at the time. He is an offensive player not coming in as a substitute. There is no reason he is out there other than to argue the call with no helmet on. Every official should have thrown a flag at that point. At the very least it should have been a Dallas penalty, there is no way you can justify not calling that penalty. TV ratings will be higher for a Cowboys-Packers game than they would have been for a Panthers-Packers game and a Lions-Seahawks game.

The NFL is always a ratings juggernaut, especially in the post-season. In this day and age of hackers and whistle-blowers do you really think the NFL would risk everything for what? An extra million viewers? It makes no sense at all. If they were exposed, the NFL would never recover. They'd be dead. OVER.

Besides, everyone seems to forget that the refs called back a Cowboys touchdown just a few minutes before the other penalty, on a questionable holding call. Not a good way to favor a team.

Also...Suh was supposed to be banned from the game but the NFL overturned the ban and let him play. If you're trying to help a particular team win the game, letting the other teams best defensive player, who you had a legitimate reason to ban, letting him play isn't exactly a good way to help the other team.

I believe the NFL is guilty of having officials who are on average far too old to be on an NFL field officiating games.
A questionable call is not the same as two blatant no calls.

The NFL told the Lions on Tuesday the Dallas Cowboys benefited from a second crucial call that went uncalled in their victory over Detroit in the wild-card round.

The picked-up flag on the pass-interference call against Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens has taken on a life of its own, and NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino said it should have been called defensive holding. However, the missed hold by Cowboys offensive guard Ronald Leary on Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh looks pretty bad as well. Suh, who is bearing down on Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was clearly held by Leary when he put a bear hug on Suh. It was just enough of a hold that Romo was able to convert a crucial fourth-and-6 throw to Jason Witten for 21 yards. Six plays later, Romo found Terrance Williams for what would be the go-ahead touchdown in the final few minutes of the game.

Now even the NFL admits that there were two missed penalties on Dallas. The whole world knew it was a penalty except the zebras. Unbelievable!!

The NFL denies that the fix was in for the Cowboys getting the victory. But if you're a Lions fan, hearing these two meaningless mea culpas from the league at this point, does little to relive the bitterness you feel over this game.

Needless to say, the refereeing crew led by Pete Morelli won't be graded too high for their effort in this contest.

The flag was picked up because that ball was uncatchable to warrant a flag for it. 2nd ref seen it and this Lions got cheated is bull anyways. If flagged doesn't guaranty a TD on that drive. most likely a FG, but they choked anyways letting the Cowboys drive for the winning score up.

If the NFL continues to let the actions of fools like Dez Bryant to happen, they'll lose more and more credibility every day.

College football and the NFL are tops for me but I can see things happening down the road for both that will make them fall in a downward spiral very quickly.
