Is the rep system now almost useless?

I still rep over intelligent and/or funny posts - and nep rep on offensive/abusive posts.

I must admit being a bit curious of those folks with more than one red stone, though ("Naughty, naughty, very naughty" as Ebeneezer Goode would say).

Ahhh, The Shamen!!! Blast from my university days in Europe, om3ga!!! lol

Yeah this one new guy now has -4 rep power, I saw today! Never heard of him or saw many of his posts anywhere before yesterday, but he's apparently really wreaking havoc SOMEWHERE on the board...

I've had some run-ins w/him, and his -4 stones, you say, are not unnecessary:crash:

I've seen a couple with -3 rep. First reaction was "who did they piss off?"..:1orglaugh

"eezer Goode" - those were the days (and a bit of "Strings Of Life" by Rhythim Is Rhythim wouldn't go amiss either)

Back to topic... Here's the rep problem, folks. :2 cents: I can't recall this thread, but apparently I even posted in it and then the topic died, which was a good thing in my opinion; but the practice of circumvention is out there and I think it's important that it be brought to light.

I can't believe it I just rep someone for his first post as I really liked it and wanted to encourage him.But believe it when suddenly he's only ever posted once and now has 2 rep stones.Unbelievable or what ?

Member, you member...
One thing is sure with me - the only time I repped "banned" members was when they were active - no reason to do it now. Hell, I don't even rep members who've NOT POSTED in a long time - why should I? They are not currently contributing to my happy times here.

i don't know if the rep system is useful now or ever before but some people like getting a thumbs up or a complimentary pm so i don't see anything wrong with it. i know i appreciate the comments left to me by fellow board members:)
About rep stones though, personally the amount of rep stones doesn't alter my opinion of a persons post whether it be good or bad (not sure if that sounds right but i hope you get the jist)
:2 cents:

I've said this somewhere before on the board but not on this thread.I think what the rep system does is this. When your a new member and someone with a lot of good rep gives you advice. You know it's going to be good advice or helpful as he's been given rep for this reason and making good posts.

Lately I've been experiencing some three stone bumps. Quite a change from the days when it would take at least three people repping you to get one stone, but never-the-less. Its actually kind of cool watching one's stone number go up by three, eh cabey LOL

i can't even give rep to some of the ppl i want to it tells me i must share rep with others... what is that all about..

The rep system has it's good and bad standard.

I've only posted 60+ times but have recieved some nice rep points which makes me want to post more and open up with the nice people here.

I've seen some with bad rep and it just encourages them to want to piss people off.

The rep system (when used) is like a nice pat on the back. Everyone likes to know that their opinions are/have been valued by their peers and it just makes people want to come back.

Thanks to everyone who thinks that I have said something worth it...

I'm going to bump this thread...but take it in a bit of a different line of thought... I would have started a new thread, but this thread seemed to be a logical place to post my ramblings...:D

I wouldn't say the rep system has become worthless...not at all. What I feel maybe has become less meaningful are the constant congratulations for hitting the rep milestones... I'll try to explain what I mean and I really ask that people don't think I'm trying to be arrogant or elitist. I mean...I can hear it now...people saying 'Oh sure, easy for YOU to say...you've got your ### rep!' Hopefully those of you that know me know that's not my style...

We now have a number of 200, 300+ rep members...and that number is growing quickly. The truth is...it's now VERY easy for someone to reach 100 rep in a short amount of time and without a lot of effort. Pretty soon...the same thing can be said for reaching 200... What we have here, and without going into a complicated mathmatical explanation, is exponential growth.

Anyway...the result...for me anyway...is that I really don't even pay attention to the 100 rep thread much anymore. I check it every few days, I check it when I see someone familiar has passed the 100 mark. I'll be honest, I spend A LOT of time here on the board, but I would be spending a lot MORE if I were reading/responding/congratulating every new 100 rep member.

To some degree my attitude is...'When you get to 200...I'll give you your props.' I suppose at some point that's going to change to 300, 500, 1000...

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that I think the 100, 200 or any other rep thread should be closed or that those members haven't hit a personal milestone. It's great! Every respected member is to be congratulated for being an asset to the board! Heck...I'll be honest...I like getting the rep...I like giving it...I like getting the congrats...and I like giving them out! But at some point...unless some type of streamlining is done we are going to have threads for every 100 point increment and members will spend an hour reading those threads and posting congrats.

Anyway...just my thoughts...my :2 cents: As I said, this is not meant to offend or slight anyone or set myself or other 'senior members' above the rest. I just tend to be practical... And I see a trend developing that I would like to hear other member's opinions on.

Thanks all...and happy posting! :)

Excellent post and thoughts wlfman. Yes, it is quite easy to get to 100 rep, especially now, all you have to do is post in the congrats thread and your rep often goes up. Maybe as to why so many newer members have such high numbers. I was surprised to see the 400 rep thread, as it seemed a bit useless. 500 maybe, 1000 definetly.

Basically we need a change, as we've said before, to the system.

There are thousands of people who come here every week. Some post, most do not. Of those that do post and make an effort to contribute in some way, they are not always out to recieve rep, just to add a line here and there. The ones out to make rep are most likely friends with the so-called higher rep members. This is the only way to make 100 rep quickly as I see it ( or any massive number of rep). So why wouldn't you want to congratulate your friend on making 100 rep?

The rep system is a gimmick to get us to keep coming back here. But it seems to have spawned into some sort of competition of who can achieve the most rep. I don't think this was its purpose, but it is what it is....

Truthfully I never thought it was that important to get worked up over. The rep system is what it is. I tend to think of it as an alternative PM system to thank people you thought made a good post. I think it has merit just for the fact I get to read the responses people leave me on it. Sure people are getting bigger numbers, but to me the responses are the heart of system. The other stuff is either nice bonuses or not worth worrying over. I think people care about this too much sometimes.

If anything I would like to see a time limit where you can rerep somebody without spreading the love. Otherwise I have to go and rep twenty more people just to get back to the person I want to compliment, but if it has been a week and a half I would like to be able to rep somebody even if it is close to being consecutive repings. I tend not to force anything by reping people I might not otherwise do just to get back to a certain person. That is the biggest reason I don't rep as often as I do. I don’t want people to think I am a stingy reper. It’s just sometimes when I want to, I can’t.

Some people earn their rep points through active and positive contributions to the board, while others trade rep points back and forth like sexually-transmitted/communicable diseases.

Life's a fairground. Shit happens. C'est la vie.

Rep points are meaningless now, as wlfman suggested, IMO. They've been in place on the board for about 13 months.

Times change...

I used to get a 3 rep-point compliment from a fellow member and be thankful that they valued my contribution to the board; I now get "hahahaha great post - spread the rep" comments with 100-300 rep points... It's insane and pointless (if considered properly, I think).

Exponents ALWAYS complicate matters...

Just :2 cents:...
