Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Honestly, I don't see this as an upset. I actually picked Houston to win.
Whenever Las Vegas has you as a 12-point dog at home and you win, that's an upset. I picked them to win too but I didn't put any money on it so that really doesn't count....more of a rooting bias.
Whoever wrote (believes) that is full of shit. Did nobody pay attention to the recruiting tidbit they mentioned about Houston? More than half of Houston's signee's this year played high school ball within 32 miles of the campus!
I believe what the author is saying is that the obvious local advantage is what has prevented Houston from garnering much support among other Big 12 schools in the past. For decades, UT, Oklahoma and other Big 12 schools have mined talent-rich Harris and surrounding counties like they filed a claim on them. Houston was rarely able to get any the 4 and 5 star recruits as a result (look at them when Tony Levine was coach just a few years ago!). There was a brief time when Kevin Sumlin and Art Briles were here where some of that started to shift but as long as Houston was stuck in C-USA or whatever they want to call the old Big East this year, they remained at a recruiting disadvantage. This is all in the process of changing although Ed Oliver is the first local 5-star recruit I believe the school has gotten in a long, long time. UT agreeing to consider Houston for admission is huge and yesterday's win over OU might have sealed the deal once and for all.
