2011 Tennis Thread (Grand Slams, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup)

Julia Goerges was a hometown winner in Stuttgart too, beat Woz 7-6 6-3 :hatsoff:
Petkovic, Goerges and Lisicki leading the comeback for German tennis.

And since this is the FreeonesForum I'd like to add
that especially Goerges and Lisicki are really hot women!

Gulbis proving he can lose to anyone again, getting beat by Marchenko, ranked about 102.
Fernando Gonzalez is back with a win over Klizan.
Finalist last year Isner lost in his first match.
Juan Monaco lost. Again.
Wawrinka lost to dreadlocks Dustin Brown in Munich. Dustin is actually German, he switched from Jamaican last year, so its a home tournament for him. Other Germans like Kohlschreiber and Petzschner also won.
Raonic beat Andreev in straights @ Estoril. Delpo won too but needed three sets to down qualifier Sousa.

Roger Federer, flawed hero

http://blog.oregonlive.com/tennis/2011/04/roger_federer_flawed_hero.html

Watching him play tennis was like staring at the sun: It was unbelievably brilliant...

But that was then. Federer's hair still looks pretty good, but maybe now the Haters will learn to love him. It’s hard to hate a guy when he’s down. And make no mistake, Federer is down

being realistic, he can only hope for a Madrid-Rome-RolandGarros Semifinal. More than that (final, title) would be a strong statement for half of the tennis planet, who says he's done for good (to win important events, that is). But doesn't seem too likely... :(

today in Estoril:

Tsonga lost against uruguayan Cuevas.
the frenchman is now 13-8 (with one final) in 2011... not good for someone like him.

Soderling and Delpo will crash again tomorrow (or friday). In clay, Robin has the advantage, but Delpo is playing better and better... VAMOS DELPO!

in Belgrade:

Nole continues in his terminator mode. Won 2 and 3.

Gonzalez lost :( but you gotta take is step by step, right ? just look delpo. VAMOS FEÑA!!

in Munich:

the seeds continue to fall like flies: lost Youzhny, Baghdatis and Stakovsky.

in the upper half of the draw, there's not a single player (of 5) within the top-35...
and in the bottom half, there's still Davydenko and Cilic, who might crash in the QFs. This is a very good opportunity for both of them to win a title after a long hiatus.

Munich still has Grigor 'the next Federer' Dimitrov
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/jun/18/wimbledon-peter-lundgren-grigor-dimitrov

He was down 2 match points against Baghdatis but got the win.
He is still only 19 so to be where he is now (64) is good. I think he is the youngest player in the top 100. (edit: 3rd youngest in the top 300)

Gulbis has to do well in Madrid and Rome or his ranking will drop way way down. Those two tournaments make up almost half his points (QF and SF).
Then he wont get direct entry into the big tournaments anymore, and who knows what will happen with his career.

Verdasco beat Anderson + Milos beat Simon = Real Tennis Showdown :hammer:

Lots of pressure on Nando I think.
Delpo should beat Cuevas and then take the title maybe either way.

Madrid draw here - http://www.madridopen.info/cuadros/atps.pdf
Fed/Raonic, Dolgo/Soderling and Nadal/Delpo can meet early

Yeah, now we will see how Fer responds to his big-mouth challenge from a couple months ago.

GO MILOS! :D

he just did :nanner:

but i wouldn't be so sure about beating Milos...

very very hard for those three. Also for Murray: Simon/Ljubicic in 2nd round.

On the other hand, a walk in the park for Nole: Gulbis is playing like shit and Kevin Anderson is no match for the Nolerminator, who, by the way, will play against Feliciano Lopez the Belgrade final tomorrow.

Davydenko won the ATP 250 of Munich :nanner:

very good title for Kolya, who seems to get back in track after droping to no. 41

but of course, he only beat Cilic en route to the title, as "important" opponents. But it's still a good week for him after a miserable run after his Doha final in January. We will see next one in Madrid against Granollers in 1st round and Berdych in 2nd.

It is his 21 career title (10th in clay), first in 16 months.

He climb 22 spots in the race, he's now 28.

for mayer, it was his 4th career final (no titles yet), 1st of the year

Juan Martín Del Potro won the ATP 250 of Estoril (POR) :hatsoff:

6-2, 6-2 against spaniard Fernando Verdasco

It his 9th career title (3rd in clay), 2nd of the year, and he confirm himself as the force who can join the big-3 in the men's ranking. Actually, in the race he's now no. 8, very close to no. 7, Soderling.

He will have his hands full in madrid, playing Youzhny in 1st round, Cilic in 2nd and Rafa in 3rd!!! but if someone can beat Nadal, is the tall argentinean

For Verdasco, it was a bounce back after his bad 2011 so far, with his 2nd final and climbing back 6 spots to no. 25 in the race.

he might face Roger in madrid in 3rd round

Djokovic won his home tournament in Belgrade

It's his 23th career title, 5th of the year (in 5 tournaments).

His winning streak is now in 29, the fifth best since 1990. Amazing. And he will increase that number this week in Madrid: Kevin Anderson in 1st round should be no big problem.

For Feliciano Lopez, it was his 6th career final, first in 14 months.

Delpo humilliates Cilic in Madrid 2nd round

yay! :nanner:

he's now no. 7 in the race! i hope he continue rising...

6-3, 6-0 Amazing display of confidence for Juan Martin. Next, (probably) Rafa. Awesome match.

VAMOS DELPO!
