Rafa lost the first set against no. 148 local hero Lorenzi!

^^

but he managed to beat the Italian.

however, it was a big scare for the world no. 1, and it did raised some questions:

on the other side, both Roger and Nole cruised.

but the Roger one is more valuable, since it was against Tsonga.

Roger looked good, with aggressiveness and accuracy on his shots. BUT, he sneak out saving all his 7 break points. Seven. Too much, IMO.

Rafa defeat Lopez and Mayer defeat Chela

Rafa looked much better than he did yesterday. However, is not in "terminator" mode, like Nole.

And for the german, is his first-ever masters 1000 QF.
And he has a good chance to make it SF: Murray or Starace. We all know how bad Andy is struggling since Oz, even more on clay.

Even though I hate Djokovic and am a huge Nadal fan---Djokovic has me genuinely worried. Beating Nadal on clay on spanish soil is almost a ridiculous thing to comprehend. He did it though. I watched their Miami finals match and it was a toe-to-toe affair. They went at each other. ND came out on top. But to beat Nadal on clay...wow.

Andy Roddick should not bother playing the clay court season. He is an embarrassment on clay. He really should just prep for Wimby and US Open at this point.

I think a couple of U.S. corporations need to come together and fund a "National" (i.e. SOCIALIZED!!! YES!) Tennis Program. The USTA is simply not set up to groom champions today. It's basically a great org to get people into the game and get kids playing the game. That's fine.

But we do have a real tennis history. Most casual fans in the U.S. DO like to watch tennis as long as an American is playing.

We don't have enough up-n-coming players. Our College teams have become nothing more than landing spots for Euro players to get an education.

We need to identify kid talent at age 7 and put these kids into a well-run Tennis Academy for 10 years. Think of it as X-MEN for Tennis players.

Roddick didn't play any lead up events at all on clay last year, but this year he is even playing next week in the Nice 250? Seems strange.

Maybe the US should copy the Serbian system, practically nothing

Today, Serbia still has a weak tennis infrastructure. There are no more than 450 tennis courts in the country, according to the Serbian Tennis Federation. Last year, the federation had 3,300 registered junior players. The U.S. Tennis Association has 165,000. Tennis is still less popular than basketball and perhaps soccer.

"There was no system that brought us up," Mr. Djokovic says. "It was just us and our families, that's it."

...and they have had two number one women, two number one mens doubles players and a perpetual mens number 3 soon to be number one.

Rome is more like Roland Garros than Madrid is (people keep saying its like red hard court) so it could be a good indicator. Djokovic can be beaten, its just hard when he is hitting 171 kph forehands and 154 kph backhands like he did against Stan today. It's like he has no weakness.

Gasquet played one of the best matches of his career, 40 winners / 19 UE and didn't mentally fold under pressure like he usually is prone to.
Fed didn't seem to play too poorly either 47 winners / 30 UE is always good, but Richie was in the zone so he shouldn't feel too bad.

Looks like another Nadal/Djokovic final.

Nadal routines Cilic and Novak loses only 3 games to streak-breaker Soderling with a bagel in the second, his ninth of the year already :hammer:

Super match
Maybe the best of the year so far

King Nole pulls through, but he was pushed to the brink by Murray.
Get some rest, you will need it!
Novak looked to have some injury problems + it was a late and long match, the final might be his toughest test yet.

Seems like Djokovic has already qualified for the WTF too, haha

Superman Novak too good this year
Should beat Federers 41 match streak, maybe even win RG?
Nadal is doing good still, reaching 5 masters finals in a row, but Djoko is unstoppable.

I thought Donald Young was gonna be our savior (I'm a big Donald Young fan). I don't know. I think Roddick has one more major and I think Fish, Querrey and Isner can challenge for the next few years.

Some RG draw twitter updates before they are officially released
http://twitter.com/#!/rolandgarros

Potential QF: Nadal-Soderling, Melzer-Muray, Ferrer-Federer, Djokovic-Berdych
Potential 3rd round: DELOP-DJOKO, Nadal-Davydenko, Wawrinka-Tsonga, Monfils-Llodra

DELOP is Delpo of course, if he didn't get injured before he might have had a decent Chance against Djokovic but I don't know now

First upset : Cilic loses to Ramirez Hidalgo 7-6 6-4 6-4 :hammer:

Ferrer looking good too beating Nieminen 6-3 6-3 6-1, could be a challenge to Roger

Last years finalist Stosur routines Benesova 6-2 6-3

First real upset, Berdych loses to Frenchman Robert 9-7 in the fifth
That is not good for Tomas' ranking, he was defending a SF here. 720 to 10, oof.

Streak continues for Djokovic, Schiavone crushes Oudin 6-2 6-0, Fed 2 sets to 0 up on Lopez atm...

Tough draw for Isner getting Nadal so early. Simply put, he will not win.

Being an American myself and a relatively life-long tennis athlete, I can say I don't think I've ever seen a clay court in my life in the Midwest. Yes, the rare Michael Chang and Andre Agassi wins of the world are simply that, rare. We just don't have any experience on that most alien of surfaces - clay. Thus Roland Garros is one of the harder events for me to watch and fully enjoy. :2 cents:

HELL of an effort by Isner today. If he continues to play like that he will be an elite player. For a big man to have played like that against Rafael on clay is crazy. I just wish he would have won! :(

Upset of the day so far is Clijsters losing to Arantxa Rus in 3. Lots of errors from Kim and Rus took advantage. She was down 5-2 in the second and saved a match point on the way to victory.

Murray getting pushed by Bolelli, who probably could have been winning if he didn't fold miserably at the most important times. Andy doesn't look like much of a contender so far...

Mardy Fish is the last American guy left I think, beat Haase in straights. Querrey lost to Ljubicic.
Mayer losing to Falla quite badly in the end was surprising.

Hantuchova brings an upset today, ousting Wozniacki in 2 sets... 6-1 6-3
Slamless Woz continues to be slamless. Dani was hitting through the Woz-wall, could have been a worse result if she didn't dip in the second.

Also last years finalist Stosur got beat by Dulko in 3, the other womens upset.

Fed had no trouble with Tipsarevic, Ferrer won easily too.
The big match coming up still is Delpo/Djokovic. Novak is favourite but could be challenged if JMDP has a good day.

Novak finishes the job, last two sets are 6-3 6-2
Looking amazing still. Must at least make the final , even if Fed is in the semis

Easier match for Nadal including a breadstick and bagel.

Murray got hurt quite bad in his match - ankle rolled and hobbled around for the rest of the match. Berrer wasnt good enough to take advantage though and Andy just stood there and blasted him off court.
He plays Troicki next. If his injury doesn't get better he could be in trouble...

Last American standing Fish about to be knocked out by Simon. Not a bad effort to make round 3.

Man Delpo looks good. I know he isn't his former self yet but those ground strokes are a thing of beauty. I suspect he can be in the same sentence with the "big three" in due time - Djokavic, Federer and Nadal.
