2010 Tennis Thread (Grand Slams, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup)

Serena is injured for the Paris indoors. That should put Dementieva the new favourite now. Just seen GB lose against the Netherlands in the battle for fifth, losing them some ranking points for next year. Keothavong seems to be improving after her first match though.

Ukraine - Italy will be a toss up. I hope the Bondarenkos can pull it off.
Czech Rep - Germany also a toss up. I see Germany go through.
Serbia - Russia. The Russians are missing almost all top players but will win the tie nonetheless.
France - USA is not worthy of a World Group match. Cornet/Coin vs. Oudin/Perry :1orglaugh

Reality check: My predictions were poor. :(

semis Italy vs. Czech Rep and Russia vs. USA. Italy and Russia are poised to go through to the final.
WG playoffs with Germany, Ukraine, Serbia, France, Belgium, Slovakia, Australia and Estonia
WG2 playoffs with China, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, Canada and Japan. (my predicted winners in bold).

Azarenka did only play the first match against Austria. Another year in Tier III for Belarus. Wozniacki also played only one match for Denmark. Portugal and Bosnia are relegated.

Next week Paris and Pattaya. Paris draw looks medicre at best:

Maybe Shahar Peer or Elena Vesnina can go far. *fingers crossed*

Feliciano Lopez won the ATP 250 of Johannesburg, ending a drought of 5 and a half years!
the top seed of that tounament was Monfils, but Feli beat him in the semis.

newly top-10 succesfuly defend his Zagreb title this sunday. Is his 2nd title of the year already and his 4th final in the last 4 months. This guy is one of the best players in the tour right now, along with Davydenko and Federer, of course.
He's now 15-1 in the year, best in the tour.

this week, the tennis continue in brasil, rotterdam and san jose.
- Brasil ATP 250 (top seed: Ferrero)
- Rotterdam ATP 500 (top seeds: Djokovic, Davydenko, Soderling, Monfils)
- San Jose ATP 250 (top seeds: Roddick and Verdasco)

the Rotterdam week looks pretty interesting. My guess is that Kolya will win.

brasilian young dude won the ATP 250 in Santiago (Chile), his 2nd title. Since Guga Kuerten in the 2000, he's the first man from his country to win this title.

good for this kid, who looks good for the latin-american field.

It's been a poor Fed Cup considering so many top ranked players are missing. Clearly their priorities are elsewhere...

Wozniacki/Azarenka probably should have pulled out too, I mean they have poor teams without them and I'm not sure playing Fed Cup now helped their preparations for the Clay season coming up for RG. Doubt they'll play much again when they're older. Dementieva will be favourite for Paris indoors after Serena pulled out, not sure there is anyone else in the draw who has the firepower to make loads of winners past her, but we'll see.

Bellucci Edges Monaco To Take Title

Hope to see more of Belluci this year (Maybe he'll get a run in RG?) it's been a long while a Brazilian has made a impact in Tennis. Was Kuerten a left hander too?

nope. Guga was a rightie.

and yes, i also hope Bellucci to step up this year, specially in the clay season, maybe a QF in Montecarlo/Rome/Madrid and a 3rd or 4th round in Roland Garros.

that would be nice for latin-american tennis ;)

oh lord...

the uncle toni strikes again: "Rafa would serve better if he was a rightie" :wtf:

http://www.marca.com/2010/02/10/tenis/1265837657.html

by the way, he said that rafa will be back in Indian Wells, so, that means that he won't play (for now) the 1st round of Davis Cup (against a Federer-less Switzerland and, according to some rumors, also Wawrinka-less!)... the hard courts of Indian Wells doesn't seem a nice territory to return... poor knees :(
but rafa is a true gladiator, so, it will be interesting to see.

my guess ? he will lose in his first match against a top-10 (that could be in the QF or maybe sooner).

in other news, 3rd seed and defending champion, Radek Stepanek, just lose in San Jose. Bad for "the worm"...

I disagree for Azarenka. The Belarusian team looks good with a solid Govortsova as number two and some prospects for the future like Anna Orlik. Considering the players who played for Sweden and Slovenia (who qualified for the play-offs), it's a shame they crashed out on a so measly level.

Wozniacki will surely pass on the Fed Cup in the future. She only has to play once every four years to meet the standards for the Olympics.

The draw for the playoffs:

Belgium - Estonia
Ukraine - Australia
Germany - France
Serbia - Slovakia
-------------------------
Poland - Spain
Sweden - China
Canada - Argentina
Slovenia - Japan

Good day in Pattaya with cuddly Tammy Tanasugarn going through against the dreadful Lisicki. My money is on a Dushevina-Zvonareva final there.

I watched a bit of Dementieva's match today. Solid win against Pavlyuchenkova. With Wickmayer out I don't see anyone giving her major headaches there. She's set to play the final against one of the Italians.

Ana Ivanovic poses for a swimsuit sports illustrated
The girl might be pretty, but she's boring beyond words.

Dreadful in what way? :dunno:
She is a thick, overambitious bimbo.
Sharapova is still the player I like the least, but Lisicki is a close second.

I hope the Dementieva - Petkovic QF in Paris will be good tomorrow. I really like Petko. She's a bright young lady. Shahar with a solid performance through against Sprem will face a strong Safarova. *fingers crossed*

My girl Vera is out in Pattaya. But Tammy and Shvedova are in the QF. Not a bad week so far.

terrible news, people:

Del Potro out for up to eight weeks with wrist injury

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/8511886.stm

:( this is very sad. This means that he's going to miss:
- Marselle (ATP 250)
- Dubai (ATP 250)
- 1st round Davis Cup
- Indian Wells (Masters 1000) - 2009: QF (180 points)
- Miami (Masters 1000) - 2009: SF (360 points)

damn! that's a lot of tournaments! lucky for him, he will lose just a few points (540) and he will fall maybe to 6th.

Die For Me
A World Without Roger Federer

WARNING: NOT FOR DIE-HARD FED-FANATICS!

great reading

Andy Roddick must want to live in this world :D
I think sometimes he doesnt get the credit he deserves since he has only won one major. Kinda hard when you have had to play Roger Federer in every single GS final except one(which he won).
Only freaks like Nadal beat Fed at Wimbledon, and that was only one time :dunno:

I think it's a good thing to give all the other player a lot of credit, because the deserve it. In the Top 10 today there are 10 superb Tennis players. But at the same time you have to give Roger even more credit for being as dominant as he is in a time and age of Tennis where so many good players are on the Tour. And losing to Nadal in three different Slam finals, and to Del Potro in the US, just shows nothing is for granted when it comes to winning Grand Slams. All that makes Federer's accomplishments even look brighter than before.

Like Mats Wilander always says, Tennis is a major mind game, and Federer gets into people's heads. He owns Roddick, I think that's pretty much out of the question. Even with this epic Wimbledon final, he owns Roddick's ass. Even Davydenko who has beat him twice in a row, he owns him too, because in Slams, he's helpless against Roger. Same goes for Murray...Djokovic and Tsonga. And then there's Nadal, and he owns Federer, because he's way deep in his head. But as I said, all that, meaning serious competetion from all ends and a nemesis in Nadal, makes Federer even greater.

But all in all I think there's no better age to be a Tennis fan as of right now.
