2010 Tennis Thread (Grand Slams, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup)

Another fact is that Murray is now 0-2 against Federer in GS finals, losing in straight sets both times.
6-4 isnt really a dominant record anyway (now its 6-5).

Murray must be pretty weak in the head if Rogers comments were the only reason he lost. I give him more credit than that :dunno:
It's better than Roddick's record which is like 2-18 I think. :(

Australian Open wrap-up: The truth about Federer-Nadal rivalry

http://blog.oregonlive.com/tennis/2...t_the_roger_federer-rafael_nadal_rivalry.html

"Nadal's injury issues make me think of a particularly cruel remark that Joe Frazier once made about his foremost rival, Muhammad Ali. Ali won two of his three fights with Frazier and, of course, now famously suffers from Parkinson's Syndrome.

"Look at him now and look at me and tell me who really won those three fights," Frazier said.

The simple fact is, it's not easy to keep up with Roger Federer. It has caused truly exceptional athletes to push themselves to their physical limits and beyond. Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro have all struggled with injuries, including at the 2010 Australian Open. Nadal, just a couple of days after declaring that he was in excellent condition and had no lingering pain in his knees, defaulted mid-match against Andy Murray in the quarterfinals. Now he's going to be out of action for four weeks, and observers increasingly wonder if he'll ever be the same again. Federer, meanwhile, floats on from major to major, unimpeded by physical problems despite having to lift up all those heavy trophies. Sixteen major titles; eight straight major finals; 23 consecutive major semifinals.

Look at Nadal now and look at Federer and tell me who really won all those major finals."

I'm still laughing at some of blgdick's posts in this thread...:rofl2:

Playing tennis is not supposed to expose someone to permanent injury/fatal injury as boxing does.

Nadal won his slams and toppled Federer in the greatest tennis match ever. It will be a shame if Nadal can never recover from his knee injuries because if he was 100% healthy, it's unlikely Federer would've ever won his French :)thefinger) and Nadal took Wimby from Fed too :thefinger

So while I appreciate the greatness of Nadal (and Feds), Nadal will be taken down a notch off the pedestal if it comes out that he roided out and his knees are shot because of his roid usage.

It is a funny comparison because Nadal is the Smoking Joe Frazier --the blue collar physical boxer--and Federer really could be compared to the artistry of Ali...that seems to make sense to me :dunno:

ok, Roger amazed us all, but that's already history.

tennis continue! this week there are tree ATP 250 tournaments:

Zagreb: Top seeds: Cilic, Ljubicic.
Johanesburg (South Africa): Top seeds: Monfils, Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez.
Santiago (Chile): Top seeds: González, Mónaco.

IMO, the 3 top seeds should win easily, knowing that there's almost no competitors against them.

4. Rafael Nadal is in trouble. At the risk of sounding flip, there's a serious risk Nadal has lost his mojo -- or at least suffered its diminishment due to his ongoing injury issues. Each week the guy isn't out playing and contending at tournaments takes a little away from his aura -- a glow generated by his ironman stamina and, more importantly, by the way being on a roll event after event now seems to have been so critical to his success as well as his mystique. Nadal's physical problems are bad enough; the mental struggles they forecast also are cause for concern. The best chance Rafa has to turn it around would seem to be a healthy, renewed assault on the European clay-court circuit, picking up where he left off in the spring of 2009, pre-Madrid.

the true momenth of truth for Rafa, it's going to be, indeed, Montecarlo (where his clay season begins)... i just hope he can bounce back and gives us some amazing fights!

Well Federer proved he was once again the best player in the world in a assured perfomance. I think half of the first set and second set was probably some of the best tennis he's played for years. Murray would be disappointed to miss out in taking it to a fourth set at least, but he'll have more chances to win in GS finals the future. (But probably not if Fed-ex is playing.)

I wonder if someone unlikely like Tomic/Gulbis/Monfils et al. or another young prodigy will end Federer's semi final record? I mean almost 10 years ago, He did the unthinkable by beating Sampras in Wimbledon, so it's conceivable some talented player could make a shock entry into world tennis in a similar way.

The way he's playing he could win 20 (or more) majors and he still has a long time to go at his level. He said it himself he loves to play, so this could go on for a while. Shame for Roddick. Roddick would probably have like 3-4 majors at this point if not for R-Fed. So would Djokovic

Not sure about NoDjo. He's gone backwards imo since his AO triumph a few years ago. He isn't at the level with the likes of Murray or Federer at the moment. Unless he improves, I see him moving back to 3/4 in the world. Maybe not Ivanovic style climbdown, but he's recent form is worrying atm.

there's no shame in losing against Federer.

anyway, i agree that Roddick should have more slams.

but Nole ? c'mon... the guy is good, but not THAT good. Maybe another GS, but no more than that.

Call him NoDjo for a nickname, trust me makes more sense than Nole. ;)

Anyone keeping track of any Tour matches atm?

Nadal needs to go back to the muscle shirts. It all went downhill when he put those in the closet and came out with the bland, dull shirts and crappy shorts...:sleep::sleep:

Fed Cup is on in Lisbon atm, where 16 nations competing in Group in the Europe/Africa zone. Within Group I, Europe/Africa, there are 16 nations in four pools with Bulgaria, Israel, Netherlands and Slovenia in group A, and Croatia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland making up group B. Denmark, Hungary, Latvia, Sweden are in group C with Britain in group D.

GB won their first tie against Bosnia easily 3-0 Link and are currently playing Austria in the second tie.

Henin has also been given a wildcard for the upcoming India Wells tournament in March. Link

Further info on Fed Cup matches are here: Fed Cup Kicks Off.

I'm surprised that Vika Azarenka plays Fed Cup this year. Too bad that her participation didn't have any impact on the first (and probably crucial) match against Austria. :(

Britain will not be promoted. They'll have a chance against Austria - at least I hope so - but if nothing unusual happens, they'll lose to Belarus.

The World Group looks dismal compared to the Tier III tourney in Portugal. Many top players are absent.

Ukraine - Italy will be a toss up. I hope the Bondarenkos can pull it off.
Czech Rep - Germany also a toss up. I see Germany go through.
Serbia - Russia. The Russians are missing almost all top players but will win the tie nonetheless.
France - USA is not worthy of a World Group match. Cornet/Coin vs. Oudin/Perry :1orglaugh

WG2: Belgium, Poland, China are missing their top players too. Estonia vs. Argentina is simply laughable.
