2009 TENNIS Thread (Grand Slams, Tourneys, Davis Cup)

I found it fitting that Federer equalled the all time Grand Slam record with the 1 major he had previously failed to win then then goes on to break it at Wimbledon where he first made a name for himself.

Wimbledon soon: and a new hood, so no more interruptions :)

Federer
- Grand Slam Titles - 14
- Titles - 59
- Winning % - .807
- Record - 650-155
- Weeks at #1 - 237

Sampras
- Grand Slam Titles - 14
- Titles - 64
- Winning % - .774
- Record - 762-222
- Weeks at #1 - 286

Federer won his 14th Grand Slam title 4 years before Sampras won his.
Sampras never won the French Open.

Federer is going to smash every record in the books. Nadal might then smash those records. :dunno:

Wimbledon: of course, it has to be Nadal v. Federer.

Good point and record comparisons.

It's pure speculation because they played in different eras but I believe Bjorn Borg and Ivan Lendl would have faired admirably had they played in the same era... then none of the three would be near Sampras' slam titles.

It's just my opinion, but I have had Roger in the top three for awhile and that includes Borg and Lendl... I couldn't say who's the best because all three were so incredible in there own eras. :2 cents:

But on topic, congrats Federer!!! :whoo hoo!:, uhmm I mean :clap clap clap: :ahem: :bravo ol' chap.:

Wow. Looks like it's already over then: another Federer win.

Uncle Toni has come out and said Nadal's status for Wimby is unknown at the moment but tests and discussions with a medical staff in Barcelona will determine his status. Rafa has has tendinitis in his knees before but people are claiming this isn't tendinitis, maybe something more serious.

It will be a travesty FOR THE WORLD is he can't defend his title. Everyone on the planet should be GLUED to Wimby--hoping for a rematch in the finals....

I don't think Federer is the greatest ever. I think he's in the discussion and a certain Top 5 of all time...

Should the World of Tennis raise the Net Height 2 inches to *combat* racquet/string technology, bring volleying back to the game and limit the influence of POWER on the sport?

What do people think?

If they did that, I doubt Nadal would win as much as he does. Power is his game. Compare that to Federer's who is far more technically sound those measures would only help him.

Nadal hits so much topspin he could probably do okay. When I was thinking about what raising the height would do, it would limit power on serves and returrns...and it might bring back the serve/volley strategy for some players:dunno:

Certainly most baseline bangers would have to retool their games somehow..either take off some power for more topspin or take off power and focus on placement, drop shots, etc...:dunno:

Not sure about that, I think at the speed in which the game is played today even raising the height of the net is probably going to do nothing. They could always make the balls heavier, which would slow the game down somewhat and then maybe serve/volley could come back.

There still are some serve/volleyers out there. Federer on occasion still does it. I dont think most clay/hard court players where baseline play is a given are going to go for it though. And if they just make the exception for grass court play, I dont think many of those clay/hard court players would attend.

Maybe as busenbust says, bring back wooden rackets.
