Even after Bryan Berard the wussification of the NHL continues on. Fucking Shanahan.

Shanahan is doing an amazing job as the NHL's Vice President of Hockey and Business Development and head disciplinarian. You are the first person besides that idiot Don Cherry that I've heard say something negative about the job that Shanahan is doing. He's been fair, consistent, and objective and has made all the right suspensions/non-suspensions thus far. And he defined the offences, which was a huge step.

P.S. Brendan Shanahan cannot "wussify" anything. He's tough as nails and would fuck you up.

P.P.S. Movember is a good cause and that mask of Jonas Hiller's is fucking epic. Pure awesomeness!

Of course he and the rest of the NHL have a lifetime more authority on matters of the league, but I think some of the moves that have been made have been excessive.

The visor thing is just another step in the wrong direction, IMO. Seriously, in the history of the league, how many players have actually lost an eye? I never heard a great deal about this when Berard got clocked. Now Pronger (is this because it's Pronger, a legend in the game?) gets whacked and it's all over the place.

For the record, Shanahan (and the NHL, in fact) have had nothing to do with the talk over making visors mandatory. That's all come from the media. I, for one, think that it's ridiculous to require players to wear a visor. I also think that most players should do so, but I absolutely feel like it should be their choice.

I was going to say that in my last post in fact, that the media are the ones banging that drum. I don't know where it is coming from.

It's so unbelievably asinine to suggest that visors should be mandatory. I remember watching MacT play without a helmet and he seems like a functioning human being (he was certainly a brilliant coach with the Oilers).

Anyone else have an opinion on the visor debate?

It should be the players choice. That's that. There is no argument for them being mandatory. Players themselves have come out and said they know the dangers and they still choose to not wear them.

I'm not familiar with how badly the impact line of sight or vision, but if it's not that bad I'm surprised players don't wear the helmets with the cages on them. Or are those not allowed? :dunno:

Covering the face entirely is not allowed. I think it is because they want fans/people to see the player for publicity. Occasionally you will see a player with a busted jaw with some makeshift looking Itech on, but that's about it.

It's that's true then the league can never say they care about reasonable safety above all other things, especially when it has virtually no impact on the on ice sport like other rule changes that are made for safety. I could mention the NFL has players with their faces covered and it has done almost nothing to stop individual player publicity there.

(About the only concern I might have for them would be it encouraging players that wear them to fight more considering they pretty much would have armor on that makes them immune to all blows to the face, and it would be very cheap in that regard.)

Truth be told in the past wearing even a helmet was considered pansy, Then wearing even a half visor was considered pansy. Now its' gotten to the point that some people somewhere in the MSM/Entertainment industry want "safety first."

Ultimately this is a league issue and the players should decide on it.

But seriously D, what is the safety issue here? As far as I know, no player has ever lost an eye. Bryan Berard was damn close. There have been deaths in the NHL but these were from skate slashing and older players whacking their head on the ice. You can see a list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ice_hockey_players_who_died_during_their_playing_career

I don't see a much of a problem with the players choosing not to wear it if given a choice, but if they want it something like that it also shouldn't be withhold from them without a good reason.

While nobody has lost an eye, if I was a player, I would like to retire with most of my teeth and my nose intact. Which is why I would probably wear a full cage around my head unless there was a good reason not to do so. Acting macho and tough in the face of common sense wouldn't be one of them though.

It's just part of the culture. It's not just about being macho. I can assure you hockey players aren't brainless and if this was an issue of concern long ago the NHLPA would've adopted a full face-covering policy. :2 cents:

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
Damn, 6 goals collectively in 7:22 (3 in :65 for Chicago) during the second period between the Hawks and Lightning. No scoring in the first period, and then they started lighting the lamp like crazy. Great game to watch right now... if you're a Hawks fan. And it sounds like a good portion of the crowd in Tampa are Hawks fans. :D

Damn. 8 goals in the second period, now tied 4-4.

:surprise:
Yeah, both teams are playing great offensively. Stamkos is a Hawk killer. I think he averages a hat trick against this team. Oh yeah, Lecavalier and St. Louis aren't bad either.

Should be a helluva third period.

Sharpe, that kid is magic! Is all I can say.
