NFL '11 Season Thread

Don't look now but the Texans D just got a whole lot better with the addition of CB Johnathan Joseph and S Daniel Manning. Rumors had them being in the mix for Nnamdi Asomugha but this option might make more sense for a team that needs big-time help in the secondary at both CB and Safety. We'll see if the defense can improve to the point where this team finally becomes a legitimate contender under the guidance of Wade Phillips and the institution of a 3-4 defense that will feature Mario Williams as an OLB. Should be interesting.

Houston has had a horrible secondary the last couple of years. I have to imagine what they have done is an improvement over that. Those two players combined might have come cheaper than Asomugha anyhow and he can't be everywhere at once.

With the number of teams running a 3-4 defense now I imagine sooner or later the advantage of finding good players will shift dramatically in favor of teams running a 4-3 if for nothing else than good linebackers that play well in a 4-3 will be a lot easier to find than ever before. (I think years ago when Belichick started going to the 3-4 and started the trend we see now it was partially because almost everybody was running a 4-3 and it was just a lot easier to find good linebackers for a 3-4 with not as much competition for them.)

I could also again state that finding a top of the line nose tackle for a 3-4 with is one of the biggest needs for it is always pretty hard.

Anybody else just happy to be talking about NFL football? I know I am

Indeed good sir! Indeed! I am still a bit breathless over the fact that the Eagles just made their defense go from "alright" to "NASTY" in less than 24 hours. I bet Jerry Jones is going ape shit about now. I bet he is turning red and purple because he really wanted Nnamdi on his team. Oh well....FUCK THE COWBOYS!

 Could not agree more. The conversion of Mario Williams to OLB made a really good LB in Zac Diles expendable for instance....the Rams, running a 4-3, scooped him up.

In the final analysis, it just wasn't worth it for the Texans to break the bank for Asomugha when they could get a really good cover corner in Joseph and a very solid strong safety in Manning for the same money. A bold and long-overdue move to greatly improve this team by GM Rick Smith and the Texans' braintrust.

As a fan of Chicago I can't say I'm happy with their offseason moves this year.

Jerry Angelo doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Roy Williams? I would've preferred Ochocinco. For a fifth and sixth round draft pick, the Bears could've had him.

They not only signed Roy Williams, but they also signed Vernon Gholston. That's just kind of scary for a Bears fan.

As far as offensive and defensive schemes go good coaches always know it's better to design the system they have around the good players on the team and your team's strengths and not to try to make players run a scheme that's not best for the team just because it's what you run. (Or to go out and get worse players because they might fit what you want to do.) Good teams design their system around their players and what would work best with them and not the other way around where they try to make their players fit the system. That's something I don't think Martz has ever learned.

His system worked years ago when he had a quarterback that was having a couple of the best years ever, one of the best running backs ever, and two pro bowl wide receivers all working with one of the best offensive lines in the league with one of the best tackles anchoring it. Trying to emulate that with any of his teams afterwards, especially the Bears the way they are, is not a very good thing.

Bye bye Asante Samuel??

I AM SO HAPPY TO BE A PHILADELPHIA FAN
Completely new incredible coaching staff as well that fits my boy Andy Reids mindset

Lets just Recap(in no particular order)

Get Bunkley out of PHI (semi-sad)
SIGN NNAMDI :nanner:
TRADE Kolb for DRC :nanner: (glad, bc Kolb was just talent being wasted bc Vick is just incredible)
SIGN BABIN back:nanner:
SIGN Cullen Jenkins(completly unexpected icing on the cake):nanner:
Drop Akers :( (sad to see him go)
Drop Quintin Mikell (watever)
Sign Vince Young
Sign Johnnie Lee Higgins (just a little extra sprinkles on top of that icing)

Almost all of that happened on July 29th which is officially now a holiday in Philly !

Lets not also forget, Howie Roseman and Joe Banner deserve extreme credit for all of this greatness because they are true geniuses and are not done wheeling and dealing for more talent

And honestly, we dont need to get rid of Asante. I think we are probably going to ask a lot for him , which we should, and ask for a great RT or LB that fits our system and has a lot of accolades. If not, whatever, im completely content having a three headed tandem to shut down and passing efforts by a team. Reminds me of the days of Blitz Inc. *sheds tear*

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!

**And in Phillies news, adding Hunter Pence who is a great addition to our arsenal bc we direly needed a solid hitter.

Happy that the ravens finally decided to resign somebody... Chris Carr is staying. So in free agency all we've done is resign Yanda and Carr... I never expected them to go out and get any big name players, but I at least expected something... Hopefully we resign mason soon... Oh wait, don't let me forget that we resigned Marcus Smith too...

Yeah, It is pretty much over. The Eagles will at the least get to the 3rd game of the playoffs and at the most win the Super bowl. If not this year, next year. It is hard to imagine a new defensive unit coming in and all of a sudden and being cohesive. Their true talent might come in the middle of the season for all we know. But this defense, at least on paper, looks unimaginably scary. Lets just look at the facts: They got to the playoffs with a solid offense and okay defense last year. If there is a coach more deserving of a championship than Andy Reid, then I am sorry I missed them.
