Coronavirus

I see that North Korea is still saying they have no confirmed cases.
I wonder if this is what will take Kim down? If you're not open to admitting you need the help, how are you going to get it? There's no way that they can develop their own vaccine, and looking at South Korea and China's cases, there's no way the virus didn't make it in there.

Very important in a totalitarian govenrment to appear to be without fault. If you admit fault in anything who knows what will happen next?

North Korea has some of the strictest border control in the world though, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility, if still unlikely. And I don't think we should underestimate their ability to develop a vaccine for it when you consider what Cuba have achieved, even though the country's broke.

Although I read The Guardian web page every day i missed this story. Cuba has had from what I remember a history of having good medical care for it's people and has "loaned" Doctors through out at least South America to help care for people. I suspect at least in the past the Heath care system was used to promote the Communist system they have. And if I remember correctly many of the Maxist leaders went there for care. Even so develping their own vaccine is a very good and for me surprising thing to be able to do. Good for them. As far as North Korea, they may be telling the truth but considering past practices, I doubt it.

It's also offered any excess vaccines they produce to other countries in their region, if they need them. I can't wait until my kids move out, I'm moving there. And not just for the food.

If they used the resources they spend in nuclear weapons and cyber warfare on medical research, then maybe they had a slim chance. I can't see them being against human experimentation, so that might have helped. But even with all that, I seriously doubt they would have the capability to create something that the collective efforts of the world still took almost a year to create.

In the off-chance that they did create something, you know they would have announced it to the world - kim wouldn't be able to resist saying that he saved the human race.

I agree the tight border would have stopped general traffic (not that there was much of that to begin with), but they still rely on imports to survive, most of which comes from China and SK. And smuggling along the Chinese border is always a thing, and those involved aren't in the best sanitary conditions. So I think it's a safe bet it got into NK - and IMO, likely running rampant.

My brother spent several years working in Columbia and he has said that when he gets too old to work and get around well he is going back there for the free good healthcare.(and I expect the food as well from what he has said)

Also this week they had to deal with the strongest cyclone in over 20 years which forced the evacuation of 200,000 people.

Imagine trying to social distance yourself in an emergency shelter. And there was that national farmer's protest as well, which AFAIK is still ongoing.

I've seen some replies here, but how has everyone reacted to their shots and which ones did you get?
I finally got an appointment next week, although it's unclear if it's Pfizer or Moderna. I hear Pfizer is the better one, but there's more Moderna supply these days.
I've got it scheduled for later in the afternoon, but wondering if I'll need to call in sick the next day.

I got Pfizer, was a big nothing sandwich - just a sore arm for a few hours.

My wife and I both got Moderna. No reactions for her and only a couple of hours of sore arm(slightly)for me. We are old(70 and 67) My daughter and her husband had stronger reactions from the second shot, slight fever, upset stomach and headache and general misery. A few hours then ok They are both around 30.

I mentioned before I had no side effects from the second Moderna shot. During that evening I even forgot I had a shot earlier in the day. I showed my nurse wife my arm and she could barely see where the needle was injected.

Thanks guys! Sounds like I will be ok by the next day. Odd that younger people seem to show more effects though. One of my coworkers said she was out of it for the day after, so that's what got me concerned. At least I know it's not going to be AZ.

Good luck with your appointment next week. Hope something good is on TV that night and you can relax. Wrestling is on every night now.

Vaccine Watch: Incentivizing the vaccine

I won the vaccine lottery and scored a Pfizer today. They are really getting better at those shots - I barely felt a prick, and my arm wasn't sore at all. I was worried if I would be able to drive home, but literally felt nothing different.

They said it's the 2nd shot that gets the worst reactions, since your body now knows the virus and reacts more vigorously in response.

I'm getting annoyed at the "incentives", particularly those that are government funded which are being given out to get vaccinated.

I was ok with when New Yorkers got a free ticket to a Yankees or Mets games, or you got a free beer In New Jersey.
Those were generally donations or privately funded. That's fine.

But then the Ohio government started handing out $1 million lottery prize per week to those who received the vaccine.
And now 2 provinces in Canada are offering millions in "free lottery" prizes.
https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-...-plans-for-covid-19-vaccine-lottery-1.5463475
https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/alberta...lottery-with-three-1-million-prizes-1.5468285

The Alberta one really gets me because it's only for people who haven't received their first shot. Meaning they're rewarding people who are hindering herd immunity.
Why can't they use this money to support hospitals (which were at breaking points), or fund more vaccine centers to speed up delivery for those who want it? Why the hell are they rewarding those who aren't doing their part?

You're getting a free shot that can save your life. What more incentive do you need?
And if you're a true anti-vaxxer, is your conviction so weak that a free beer or lottery ticket will break you?
