7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Haiti

Terrible thing this quake.Especially tough on a country that is so poor.They need all the aid and support all can give.

On a political note,I heard Rush Limbaugh said something like "Obama cares more for Haitians then Americans".Would somebody please put a bullet in his head.:ak47:

I just saw a report that as of noon today, $4 million had been raised by text messaging alone. The $4 million represents more money than was raised using texts in all of 2009, according to someone from Verizon.

For those who prefer that their donations stay in their own country, that option is available on the Red Cross site as well. There are various relief funds... not just one.

Apparently they already got 4 million dollars by texting donations alone. Who knows what else and how much more. This country is going be better off, yet still poor somehow, than it was last week. $100,000,000, including the millions of dollars in other donations, is a crap load of money.

The money will most likely be squandered and we will hear stories about how the money is being misused or not used for its original intent once the whole sympathy emotional parade flies over.

OK fair enough. I don't disagree. My point was that it takes money to fuel this rescue effort. I value my tax dollars just as much as you do but the same fiscal transparency should be a part of EVERY government expenditure (including the military) so I don't see why this rescue effort in particular causes you raise the red flag all of a sudden....there's the potential for government waste, graft, bribery and corruption in every dollar we pay in taxes, not just the ones headed to Haiti.

Spread the word" type of crap is a bunch of lies. And whoever started that crap, you're a waste of skin.

Look for long-established agencies with good percentages of money actually making it to the problem area. I have no ties to this agency, but they have something like less than 6% administrative costs (so 94 cents of every dollar gets spent in Haiti):
