With only 4 teams it takes an extraordinary turn of events to justify a non champion to play for the championship but not out of the question.

Looks like Washington is in after last night's whooping of Colorado. Bama should dispatch Florida pretty easily. It will be interesting to see what happens to Ohio St. I can see them dropping to a 4-seed and having to face Alabama in the semi. Not that I think OSU should be in the Final Four. Washington vs. Clemson would be fun.

First, let me say that I don't like Ohio State, but I can't see any justification for dropping a 1-loss #2 team down to #5 just because they didn't win their conference (especially when they didn't even get to play in their championship game).
I also can't see Penn State, or Wisconsin making the final four unless Clemson loses, and even if that happens, the committee will probably look at how Clemson lost and and possibly how either Penn State, or Wisconsin won.
Based on some people's misguided notion that only conference champions can play for the title, we could end up with some nightmare scenario where Virginia Tech, or Oklahoma State gets in.

As far as Ohio state ( I despise their coach )
They didn't warn the right to play for their conference championship that was decided on the field and they lost.
They still play in a dinosaur of a conference their 'good' teams are horribly flawed but the PR department is strong. If Wisconsin wins I don't see any problem with them being the fourth seed because at that point they own the head to head with Wisconsin and Oklahoma ( a very mediocre team ).

Also I agree conference championships are not everything but when debating one team against another it should be the difference.
Yes, 8 is the right #, but I don't see them shortening the season. Doing that means less money and most would end up shortening the season by cutting a conference game. That won't happen.
Plus, expanding to 8 teams means that only 2 teams will end up playing an extra game.
Interesting that no playoff would have been needed this year. Alabama such an easy and clear cut #1

Penn State is clearly better than I thought they were. Not a bad consolation prize playing in the Rose Bowl - big money, nice weather, hot chicks - although if they have to face USC instead of Colorado (USC is far and away the better team at present) the Nittany Lions' winning streak figures to be in serious jeopardy.

They beat Penn State AND Clemson, which puts their accomplishment right in the middle of the Top 4 conversation...seriously, they got thumped at the U, but everything else was close and only 4 losses.:2 cents: I guess what it means is that strength of schedule along with who you lost to or beat means a lot more if you take the time to look into it deeply enough.

Cinderella: Western Michigan. Last season they sucked. Now they're MAC champs. Just the MAC you say? Broncos coach PJ Fleck put it best when he said, "Fuck the pollsters. We want the fucking Cotton Bowl, bitches!!"* *--might not have been said quite this way
Over Hype: TIE--Either Penn State or Ohio State. The Bucks impress because they accomplished a lot with such a young team. An impressive defense has kept them in a Top 4 consideration mode. But they are weak at O-Line, especially on the left side. Barrett is talented but mistake-prone. Penn State is having a respectful season after their past troubles. But talk about strength of schedule, two quality wins, both very close and one a come from behind late. I like their story, but they're not a Top 4.

I can't see the benefit of expanding the Playoffs. We're going to have the same arguments then, as we do now. I also see that if they expand the Playoffs, the regular season would have to be shortened. I don't want college football turning into college basketball. The first change I'd like to see is getting rid of all the cup cake games that teams play and schedule in-conference games or out of-conference FBS schools.
The "cupcake" games as you call them will never go away. Some of those small schools depend on taking an acassional ass-whooping because of the money. The have meager budgets and $500,000 or more can fund most if not an entire season. Think about it this way, if someone offered you a million dollars to box the heavyweight champion, are you gonna say no?
Anyhow, last night, there was a possible scenario (not possible now) that I thought of at halftime of the games, What if Clemson and Penn State lost. Would Michigan get in? Would they end up playing Ohio State, again?
That would have been very interesting.
No it would allow all five conference champions an automatic bid then 3 at large teams it would certainly quiet the noise.
I'm not even comfortable with that.
We could end up with a playoff team that has 3 or even 4 losses, and be barely ranked. Then you have people screaming about having 6 or more teams ranked ahead of them that deserve a spot.
It happens like that in sports all the time. Hell my seahawks made the playoffs a few years ago at 7-9.
Nothing will ever be perfect there is no such thing in this world as perfect.
