Giants third best

Nationals play a Best of Five against the winner of a Best of Three (or five) between the Reds and the Giants. That winner then goes on to the World Series, best of seven.

I think my scenario is better than having teams who didn't finish first, are allowed to be in the playoffs.

So you would penalize the team with the best record? Baseball is a game of rhythm, if you sit a team for a week and a half they are not going be ready for game speed pitching. Either go back to two divisions in each league, or have one wild card team. The only good thing that the second wild card does is put more emphasis on winning the division.

Penalize? Give me a break! Three freaking games which will take four days at most to complete the 3 game series? However, it could be completed in two days. Three days off will be a welcome relief to the team who just finished a 162 game schedule.

A best of three playoff will never happen. Not enough revenue will come in for the teams. The owners and player's union would almost certainly demand a five game series.
Of course, rarely does a series start right after the season ends. This year, for instance, there was a one game day off.
One day.
OK, now we have two games in the first city.
Three days.
Now, we have a travel day.
Four days.
Let us now assume that all three of the games will be played in the second city. Highly unlikely - but let us assume that, anyhow. So, we have three more games.
Seven days.
Of course, the next round of playoffs certainly are not going to start right after the end of this round. In fact, there is usually an extra day off in there for someone - after all, the playoffs are staggered so that all games in a certain round are not played on the same day. Add a couple of more days.
Nine days.

That is nine days off for the team that did not play the first round. Not a welcome three day break - a very long nine day period of inactivity.
While this might not be a big deal in football, where teams with the record do get first round passes, baseball is a bit of a different sport. A lot more finesse is needed - finesse which demands a lot of practice and a whole lot more day-to-day action. Practices and workouts are no substitute for true in-game situations, and I fully believe any team in the big leagues would rather play another ballclub during that period, than sit around and see their edge go away.

In my opinion there should be three teams from each league who make the playoffs. And that simply is, the winners of each division. Three from the National League and three from the American League. No Wildcard at all.

MLB and the TV networks would never go for that. Half the playoff races would typically be over by July, attendance would drop, TV revenues would shrink. They all want more, not less so the more teams that remain in the race as long as possible, the better. Every major professional sport has a watered-down playoff qualification format for the same reason so baseball is just following the format. I don't see them going backwards.

That said, I don't like the one-and-done wildcard format either but a number of wildcard teams have proven themselves to be the best team in baseball by the end of the World Series, including last year's champ so I'm good with the way it was before the change.

The Reds are doing their best to ***** it away. Honestly, I am pretty sure they will be unable to handle a pressure situation like what they are about to face tomorrow, a do-or-die situation such as that. Too many Giants have already been through this, while the Reds have not. The Scott Rolen error last night has most likely sunk this team.
Oh well...wait until next year! It's been a hell of a fun run, as it was.

Diva is right, its far from over stan they have a chance, I agree that the Reds are really in the pressure cooker now but they can do this. In fact I hope they do, I want an all NL Central NLCS just like last year. However if the Cards indeed get there too I hope the Reds go down.

It must be a magical fuckin spell this year for the A's there destined to win.. :dunno: I was saying to myself if the tigers didn't win game 4 and let it go too 5 we'd be in big fuckin trouble.. now here's game 5 after another miracle comeback. :cussing: :rofl2: my hats off to the A's we'll see if they seal the tigers fate with this Awesome comeback in the 9th of game 4.. Unbelievable.

Well I'm a TC born and bred boy, so my allegiance can vary from season to season if the Twins aren't in it. Sorry but I am a A's (small([er] market) supporter for now.

Well I did forget 1 thing.. J. Verlander will prolly be on the bump for game 5 so the A's might not be able to pull it off after all, If JV throws another gem of game, that might just spoil the A's party / ***** season, so, I guess shall see tomorrow night. :2 cents:

They ****** big time - but I could see it in their eyes after Rolen made the error. I honestly believe it was over then.
But, they are still a very young team, and have many of their youngsters tied up for quite some time. Two years ago, they made it to the post season for the first time since 1995. This year, they won their first post season game since 1995. Perhaps in a couple of more years, they can win their first post season series. I am a patient man, and will always love his ball club through thick or thin. And I cannot say this is thin - the Cincinnati Reds had quite the excellent year, so forward ***!

Stupid plays ****** the Reds this series ... Brandon Phillips on first base then that wild pitch happens in game three, you don't take two bases on things like that. Buster Posey gunned him down at third base. They followed with two singles. Phillips would have scored.

Jay Bruce running today in game five, resulting in a strikeout/doubleplay. Posey threw to Pedro Sandoval. End of story.

Mat Latos is full of himself, always has been. Going back to his days with the Padres.
