Wal-Mart looks to Hispanic market

Wal-Mart plans to open its first Hispanic-focused supermarkets this summer in Arizona and Texas as the largest US retailer continues its drive to expand its dominance of the US grocery business.

The pilot stores, named Supermercado de Walmart, will open in Phoenix and Houston in remodelled 39,000 sq ft locations occupied previously by two of Wal-Mart’s Neighborhood Market stores.

The retailer said that the stores were in “strongly Hispanic neighbourhoods” and would feature a “new lay-out, signing and product assortment designed to make them even more relevant to local Hispanic customers”. The staff will also be bilingual.

Wal-Mart’s Sam’s Club warehouse store also plans to open a 143,000 sq ft Hispanic-focused store called Más Club in Houston this year.

Several leading regional US supermarket chains already operate Hispanic store brands, including Publix in Florida, which operates three Publix Sabor markets, and HEB in Texas, which opened a Mi Tienda store in Houston in 2006.

The markets include elements such as cafés serving Latino pastries and coffee, and full service meat and fish counters.

Leading retailers are also pursuing Hispanic consumers online, with Best Buy and Home Depot having launched Spanish-language versions of their e-commerce sites in recent months.

Eduardo Castro-Wright, the head of Wal-Mart’s US stores since 2005, has also been an advocate of testing new smaller, more focused formats, and raised the idea of turning the Neighbourhood Market into a Hispanic-style bodega concept several years ago.

He has also developed Wal-Mart’s efforts to customise its larger Supercenter stores, which have been grouped according to differing community profiles, such as urban, suburban, Hispanic and African-American, with customised merchandise.

A 195,000 sq ft Supercenter that opened in Texas last year included a tortilleria bakery, Hispanic foods and a larger selection of Spanish-language music and DVDs.

Mr Castro-Wright was previously head of Wal-Mart’s Mexican subsidiary, whose store network ranges from large US-style Supercenters to small local bodegas, an upmarket supermarket chain and two restaurant chains.

Last year, Wal-Mart also began testing four new 10,000 sq ft Marketside convenience grocery stores in the Phoenix area – its first new format in a decade. Tesco, the UK retailer, also has more than 25 of its small Fresh & Easy markets in the Phoenix area.

I saw no mention of "illegals" in that article or are all hispanics in your mind to be branded as probably illegals?
That kind of thinking is one of the reasons the republicans and the right wing is dead in this country as a national party.Keep bashing a fast growing group of voters (and I hope they do) and democrates/liberals will be in power indefinately.A hundred years ago it was all those catholic Irish and Italians who were going to ruin the country in some minds but they were assimilated and americanized and I think we survived .That is our history since we are after all a nation of immigrants.The only people the country was ruined for were the native americans(Indians) who were pretty much wiped out,I guess that might be called being ruined.
All walmart is doing is targeting a growing new segment of their customers.Thats called smart buisness.I may hate walmart but not for being smart as they are being here but for being explotive scumbags ,like the republicans are lol.

They hire them too. They want cheap labor. Why pay Steve $15 bucks an hour when you can pay Jose $7.50 and pocket the other $7.50? WalMart just wants to make money. They don't really care about the cheap products the peddle to middle Americans who they are analy raping at the same time. Same concept is happening all over America. one of the prime reasons McCain lost the election. "W" was supported by the hispanic community in large numbers. The Republican lost about every single area they had a small advantage in Hispanic, women, college educated and independent voters. although 2004 he was elected by the smallest margin in U.S. history.

What I would like to know is why if Wal-Mart can pretty much undercut everybody in prices and make most Hispanics shop there more often than not compared to other places anyway why they would even need to do that?

Maybe this is just another in a long line of reasons why we need to finally make English our national language. Not that private entities would be affected but when you could get no government help or documents in another language people would be forced to change.

(Also this is a little on a tangent, but I just don't see the so called assimilation of the Hispanics happening like it did for people like Italian immigrants. It's just not happening. Plus nearly all of Italian/Irish/German/Polish/other Europeans that came over in other immigration waves weren't illegal, and when they did came they ate up a lot less of society's resources. Pretty much a tenth of Mexico's entire population is here illegally. Saying we are a nation of immigrants is also not accurate. Most people in this country aren't immigrants since most of them were born here and they consider themselves American and not something else living in America. The vast majority of them don't really associate very strongly with where ancestors came from either, outside of some food they eat and maybe a toast in a bar every so often and things like that, unlike some groups, like Hispanics, out there. Thinking the two situations are similar is foolish.)

Targeting specific groups cuts across all kinds of lines and its done all the time in the buisness world.And let me just add that when you talk of places like Texas a lot of the hispanics there have been there longer than the whites as it was once a part of mexico till we fostered a revolution and then made it a state.I personally have met hispanic texans who can trace their family back 300 years there.

Where I live we have lots of different new immigrants from hispanics to indians to people from pakistan etc.Lot of stores that cater specifically to them as well.This is different from other waves of immigration in no way whatsoever.The truth is people like you are the negatives ones responding out of fear and resentment for the newcummers.That also is nothing new as 100 years it was "Irish need not apply".
Look at the statue of liberty and read the inscription sometime and decide whether that is really not what america was founded on.Then decide if that has lost its meaning.Depending on where there from I bet a lot of the people here decendents who complain about the "immigrants" weren't very welcomed by the natives eitheir.Some things never change.

Why do conservatives love their country more than liberals? We see it as a place the can be improved, you see it as a place that is perfect the way it is with little opened mindness.

This country when founded had separate areas when the U.S. was experiencing mass immigration back in the day. There were Irish, Italian, chinese areas in most major cities, people generally flock together.

Nothing has changed in that releam. Detroit my hometown, still has Arab, polish and Asian areas, just like every other major city. I have customers that are Bosnian or Serb and they live close in the same area.

Why are hispanics any different than in the past?

Every 1st world country is dealing with immigration issues these days. I dont alway like the illegal immigration issue, but they do the jobs Americans dont want to do like clean your hotel room or pick your strawberrys.

Dude if you don't eat tortillas, just stick with your local Vons or Ralphs supermarket. I don't get all this hate when they open a store that sells goods that are from Latin America. If it's a bad store people will not support it and it will fold, simple as that. Also WTF do illegal immigrants and La Raza have to do with anything in this article? Also please explain to me how selling tortillas and salsa is destroying America while selling lasagna and spaghetti isn't? Thanks in advance.
