"Ugly American"

*bells go off everywhere*

"Bingo you've won the prize!" :nanner:

The problem is that when a person says that, they're called hateful, discriminatory, arrogant, small-minded, evil, wicked, uncompassionate, etc. by the people who can't manage to get their **** together in their respective countries, who're always looking for international aid (handouts), and they'll take our generosity (food, money, civic development aid) one day and shoot us the next day either in the name of religion or in the name of so-called "oppression..."

It's not hatred the world has for Americans, it's jealousy.

Every country has its "labels". The French are seen as "snotty" or "stuck up"...Poland is portrayed as "dumb" or "stupid" in jokes...The English are "dull"..whatever...I believe it is the human way to always find fault with one another. Basically we are all the same. We are all struggling for recognition.
As a white Anglo-Saxon American, that works in retail. I see ALL types. I think being "American" is a certain frame of mind.

I think this is one of those things were the truth is somewhere in the middle. I don't think it is inconceivable that Americans might have a slightly higher chance of being jerks when they travel. I know plenty of people like that myself where I live, and if I had to guess I would say there are more of them here per person than in most other countries. On the other hand I think it is something that has been blown out of proportion because we are American. I think people actually look for and expect us to screw up and then pounce on us where they might not even look at or notice what somebody from some other country does. I also think some people let their views on us color their objectivity where we are assumed to be worse before we even get a fair chance to be judged by them. I also think sometimes when somebody form here does something wrong people are more likely to think that person is representative of our whole society where they might look on somebody else as just an individual from that country. There are a lot of good Americans that foreigners probably will never get a chance to see, and their are bad people in every country wherever that is.

There are a lot of reasons for people out there to dislike Americans. I would say the dislike most of the other countries' people have for us is 50+% is deserved. Whether we are having our government meddling in their affairs to further our own selfish agenda (and not because we genuinely feel it’s the right thing to do or we actually think it will benefit mankind either) or we allow our corporations to go into their countries and Americanize their business and the way they do things, (usually for the worse for our own profit) we do a lot of bad things and that isn't even taking into account the blatant stuff or the things yet to be discovered. However I think it is important for people in the world to not judge the average American by what this countries' politicians or businesses do. In reality we have about as much control over them, the super rich, and the politically affluent, as you do in yours...almost none. I would even say our economic advantage that some people are jealous of is slowly vanishing over time whether it’s because other countries are getting better, or we are falling back.

America isn't all bad. I not one of those people that has endless bad thoughts about it or it's existence. I have just come to fully recognize the good and the bad about us and to not shy away from the existence of either one.

LOL.....You know what's funny, if you are going to burn an American flag....AT LEAST MAKE SURE IT'S A REAL ONE!!!! Bunch of dumb ass backwards fucks. Those fuckers over there are a few generations removed from the middle ages, who cares what they think.

America is hated so much due to its blind ignorance to other nation's opinions and sensitivities.

We have to be sensitive to other nations now? I'm a chinese american and I've visited China in the past. Back there, they were cheering when 9-11 happened. So when someone says we're ignorant to other countries, I'd agree, but I don't give a **** either way. Excuse my French here, but why do we have to love and care so deeply about other countries that talk **** behind our backs?

Why is it our duty to send help to other countries while they call us fat, loud, ignorant slobs? My ****** made it to this country on a full ride to various universities, saying that America doesn't open up oppurtunities for other people is a bunch of crap. Some people just don't have what it takes to get here. For those who don't even want to come to America, I see nothing wrong with that and understand your love for your own country, but you must understand that I feel the same way. It always seems that another country is one to initiate **** towards America, not the other way around.

Maybe Nightfly is right in that we can be obnoxious abroad, but don't tell me you've never seen any Asian complain about how bad America is and how he/she wishes it was China/Korea and still stay put complaining. I can't speak too much for Europeans, but as for the ones I have met, I have either been categorized as a fat white lazy slob (even though I am not fat or white), or have just gotten flat out racist remarks.

Excuse me vented feelings, but I do feel quite strongly on the subject matter. Whether from Europe or even my own relatives in China, I've experienced and dealt with a lot of crap, and frankly I feel someone needs to stand up for the US, too many hippy Americans don't even have enough pride to do so anymore.

Calling me a dick head... fine. calling me a New Zealander.... NOT FINE.

i have found that out when accidentally calling a Zimbabwean a South African (vice versa) and a korean a Japanese...... my experiences with American tourists are what the article states....
