I'm not teasing, it's been like this for weeks - and we've got a water shortage in one of the wettest summers in years!

Get some radish in and you will be eating it in 2 weeks!

The soil looks like it could do with a bit of compost?

+1 with the compost. At the end of the growing season, go get some horse or cow manure and work it into the ground. Your veggies will LOVE you for it next year. (just don't put the manure in while you're growing them, you could accidently fry the roots)

Well - I had a garden.............

Oh crap...

No you don't. All I've seen for the past 3 weeks is bloody rain and I came home to guess what? Rain. Rained so hard last night I thought I'd have to hire a motor boat to get to work this morning.

I really need to take a picture of my garden. I left hubby in charge of watering and told him not to pull anything. He took me at my word and didn't pull even the dandylions growing in the path. Lazy bugger. On top of that, my potatoes and flower bed (planted a bunch of wild flower seeds there) EXPLODED.

Stood looking at my garden for about 10 minutes shaking my head. I was only gone 2.5 weeks!!!

I had the same problem when I returned. It appears I wasn't the only one on holiday!

I see now why I go for winter holidays.

Would you like me to send you a riding crop to get the garden sorted, or do you have one to hand?

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

The morning after..........

Wow.
That really sucks, man.

This may be a dumb question, and forgive me if you think it's absurd. Does homeowners insurance cover damages to your garden? I mean, it covers damages to your property, right? ...so why not your garden, too? :dunno:
Seriously thinking about asking my insurance lady if that's covered. We've already had a bit of severe weather this year and I'm expecting much more.

It does not. It doesn't even extend to trees - if you have a massive tree come down in your yard, you are 100% responsible for the clean up cost.

Yea, acts of God are not covered unless it hits your house. Fix the house and replace and damaged items. Maybe a damager BBQ pit.

I saw on the news this morning cars flooded and inches of ice. Fucked up.

hi :)
Come on here to get away from work but see the thread title and thought i would take a look lol
plot looks good and great job clearing it of weeds :) and your plants look nice and healthy
have you had building work done recently though? just the wall looks a little new and if so be care full of planting to close to it as most plants wont like the lime from the cement. Can easily be sorted though with some good acidic compost if there is an issue.
Have fun and look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour :)

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

Anyone else practically done with gardening, and not by choice?

The severe drought and heat we've had killed my squash, zucchini, watermelon (yes, for real), okra, and pepper plants.
All I have left are my tomatoes. They got knocked over during a bad storm we had, but are still producing.

thanks for the bump!

oh man, its been a crazy season. as you may know, july and august are the worst months out of the year here. hot as fuck. 115ish.

because we started things a month or so earlier than last year, we got some great yield. had a ton of squash and zuchs.

however, the past month or so, we have been battling squash bugs.

anyone else get these?

pain in the ass since we dont spray. we are doing an organic garden so what we do is water then wait a minute. the bug come out to dry, then you kill em. they lay eegs under the leaves so you gotta scrape em off. its disgusting i know, but hey, thats nature, right? i dont mind working for it but, between them and the heat, i think squash is done. nothings really getting big enough, and the heat is drying shit out.

corn is dry, got a couple ears. saved some for seed. watermelons are growing as expected. tomatoes never got big fruit. the plants got a bit top heavy.. eggplants growing. we have pumpkins already.

our bell peppers are taking FOREVER. but its healthy. green beans look ok. but its hot.

we need to see what we can start now. im sure theres gotta be some winter/fall veggies we can do.

also, this year we used food for the first time. amazing difference. glad we tried it.

im looking forward to next year for sure. every year we get better and better!
