Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

Everything except the corn and early sunflowers recovered from the hail to some extent. The melons, peppers and tomatoes in the greenhouse are doing very well - had to cut some of the flowers out of the greenhouse to allow room for the plants - been working in there all morning. Pics to follow.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

I'm just back from holiday, and I'm very thankful I had a friend to water things while I was gone. The drought here is just terrible, but I fortunately have a very productive well that allows me to keep things wet. Tonight my dinner included tomatoes, peppers, basil, garlic, chives, cabbage, and beans from my garden. I have some melons nearly ready, too.

It's brutal, here. The local farmers are about finished for the year. The corn is stunted, and the crop will be nothing. Same with the soy beans. terrible.

Absolutely. It's to be expected, really. Even though fuel costs are somewhat down, and are projected to stay down a bit, mother nature deals a pretty terrible blow. This needs to be reflected in our food costs. If not, taxes need to be raised. Farmers are going to get bailed out, and they should. We depend on them so heavily, when nature demolishes their livelihood, we can't just let the farms fail. We need to pay more for food until the conditions are such that food can be produced more inexpensively.

It sucks balls, but everything is going to be more expensive.

no, i completely understand it. its economics 101. it just sucks.

especially if your budget is already pretty tight.

Yup.
Growing your own is pretty affordable, and there are a lot of community gardens in a lot of cities. Canning/freezing fruit and veg is easy, and will save you bucks. And will be more tasty.

Of course, it also takes time.

My Early Girl tomatoes have exceeded 8' in height thanks in part to my nifty trellis work....
the fruit however is still green due to a rather chilly spring / late arriving summer.

The EG's are superb, I've been growing them for at least 15 years, they're not too big & not too small, the average size is about the size of a handball with some getting as large as a tennis ball. The residual sugar I would have to say would be medium judging from the other ten or so popular varieties I've had... beefsteaks and Ace's to name two. I'm sold on 'em eg's... but I found out the hard way a few times over the years that you don't get them from Home Depot or any other big business chain because half way through the season I'd always end up with diseased plants. I don't recall the exact reason for this but it had to do with carelessness in handling. Same goes for planting mix in those plastic sacks, one time I mixed some off brand bag into my soil and I ended up with clover oaxalis! You can't get rid of that shit... even a double dose of roundup will take that shit out. The roots of this particular clover resembles miniture bulbs... you pull it out or dig it up and just the tiniest fragment left behind will just lay there dormant in the overwinter and when spring arrives, it's ready to terrorize your garden all over again  :ak47: :flame: Oh well, learn the hard way sometimes.

Anyway, back to the tomateoes, I don't compromise, I drive some 15 miles in order to purchase my babies from a Japanese owned & operated nursery, a very reputable business that has been running since the post war days. The "Yami...." family is awesome!

Aside...Have you noticed the Salmon rage out here on the coast? I heard a skipper out of Monterey say it's the best it's been since .... '95 I think he said.
The skips also that his customers are often treated by a show of Blue Whales as they're catching limits of salmon. Sounds like a whole helluva lot of fun, huh? that's easily worth $50 a head on a party boat, don't you think?

Salmon, sliced tomatoes, maybe some spanish rice ... and a wedge of chilled crisp refreshing watermelon for din-din 2nyte
That's what I'm thinkin'.... you? :glugglug: :yummie:

thanks for the info on the EG. ive seen em, but never tried em. ive been doing the beef steaks but nothing huge has come out.

as for the salmon run, i didnt know. i moved away from the coast but i did used to deal with those when i was there.

i was about an hour or so south of monterey but made many visits there. took my girl to the aquarium a few times.

ill tell you one thing though, for the love of god, when albacore come back into town, get some. i cant tell you the craving im having for some of that local tuna. its driving me crazy!!

and 50 for a charter isnt bad. hopefully its a fully day. never pay for those 1/2 days, waste of time. besides, with barbless hooks, the seals will take about half the boats salmon. i remember accidentally gaffing a salmon once not knowing what it was one time out on the boats. apparently, thats a big no no. salmon get netted. they give salmon every chance possible to get away.

btw, coincidence enough. for dinner ive been saving a frozen piece of albarcore and gonna have it with rice and some clam chowder. i was thinking of the fish hopper restaurant in monterey. they have great chowder.

All awesome. That would have put you down by Moro (bay) / Pismo Beach correct? It's beautiful down there.

Yeah, my bro in law was independent commercial out of Santa Cruz harbor but decided to sell his 38'er about ten years ago... he simply couldn't justify staying in business with all of the govt. red tape eating up his profit at every turn, not to mention all of the fishing seasons that were cut short for reasons that often went without scientific justification. It damn near killed him to give up his business, fishing was in his blood, he was a third generation fisherman, a "Portugee'' fisherman no less!

Anyway, I went on a few Albacore runs with him and they're very long days because we'd often have to go out to sea some 50-70 miles in order to locate the fish, it's a blast though.
The trip back to the harbor in the dark of night was unsettling at first... it's weird running the engines wide open while traveling in complete darkness, of course the forward light beams don't illuminate anything, it's just as dark ahead with the lights on as it is when they're off. Auto radar navigation of course led us the way home... pretty cool shit, but still, the thought would come to mind ... what if we hit something like a log or some other floating debris, you know, something that could penetrate the hull!
:eek:MFG!!!
Wouldn't that be awful being 30 miles out!

Wait a minute, this is a gardening thread!

you got it man. right in that area. good show.

my thoughts are with your bro. thats the only reason i got out of fishing myself. the fish and game are ruthless and uneducated to be frank. ive missed a lot of work because of the closures. poor guy. ive been tossing around doing the crab run up in AK for years. worked with a captain who came down for tuna who did it. invited me to go up. i shoulda gone.

yeah, i used to take people out on albie runs too. i was first deck under the skipper. loved it man. got to fish a lot myself too. once, we took out a very famous actor (think batman, 1989). it was awesome.

mmm, craving that tuna man. craving it bad.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

My garden is going to get entirely redone this fall/winter. I've decided to pull out the completely tiled paths and I'll get some big tiles to plop down so I can plan little rock garden type flowers around them. Also going to redo the flower beds so I can get a bigger bang for my buck with such a small garden.
