I stopped by the garden store this weekend to pick up some cow manure. I need to start getting my beds ready to plant potatoes and garlic!

I don't remember what I bought, but when I was in the UK last month I stopped by the gardening store to pick up potatoes. My lord, there had to be at least 100 varieties! Saturday when I was at the dutch gardening store, there were 5. For a country that LOVES potatoes with everything, I can say they're pretty damned boring with only 5 varieties.

But anyways, I'm pulling up the last remaining strawberries to make room for potatoes and garlic. Oh, and I'm planting tulip and daffidils this week because that's what you do when you're in holland I guess.

Question for you all: I recently bought an indoor bonsai tree and I was wondering what would be the best way to remove extra growth; cut it off with scissors, or pinch it off with le fingers?

How difficult is it to grow eggplant? I'm not a fan, but hubby is. :)

I know it sounds disgusting, but you can go to various hunting stores, and buy things like coyote urine, and that will keep all things like rabbits out.

Really? ...will it keep the birds and squirrels out too? That's my other issue.

should i show them my scarecrow, jinxy?

YES!!! (so awful, it's fantastic! ;) )

I love rabbit stew.

Then bring yer gun and git ta shootin!

After the worst drought on record and watching my garden burn to a crisp for the fourth straight year I'm debating whether or not I should bother this year.

Eggplant is easy - start them early inside or buy plants if you live in zone 4 or colder.

The pellet gun takes care of all the critters! Actually, my cats keep the birds and squirrels away pretty well.

eggplant does really good all by itself. its hardy, at least in arizona it did really well and thats a tough climate.

i was just talking to my girl about doing eggplant. i helped her sister do some, we ate a shitload of eggplant. best EP ive ever had.

by the way, my stupid scare crow is working well. no more birds, or at least a hell of a lot less since i dont see trampled sprouts.

i got a jacket for my scarecrow, ill take some pics in the next day or so.

Agreed, that pretty much answers your question jinxy, eggplant is fairly easy, tomatoes is what I have trouble with, one year they will be good and the next terrible, they are hit or miss but not eggplant.

we are doing a bunch of tomatoes. mostly beefsteak. so far they are growing well. its early in the season of course. they are only a couple inches high. i am going to try one of those upside down planters my girl was gifted. i wonder how thats gonna work out..

I planted sweet pea's and carrots like a month ago, its still freezing at night but early start always helps

yeah, we got some peas already despite its still cold. not freezing but 40s-50s now. windy as hell though. used some chicken wire for them to hold onto and vine. i love peas, they grow super fast.

also got carrots in the ground. 2 varieties.

I have failed miserably with carrots.

Thanks for the advice on eggplant, y'all! :D

well, what sucks about the root veggies is that you cant see whats going on. but we did great with radishes. best radishes ever. and the greens were decent too. we also are doing some beets and turnips which are tricky too. maybe we should try potatoes.

but yeah, eggplant was easy. i just cant find the fucking seeds! btw, if you have a 99 cent store, you can get 10 packages of seed for 99 cents. they are the same brand as everywhere else and run about 50 cents a package or so normally.

i got some plant food too this time. didnt use it last year. i wonder how different it will be.

We're 100% clay here - so when I did the landscaping I ripped out 12" of clay and replaced it with real soil mixed 50/50 with bulk rose-mix.

The garden beds are 90% rose-mix 10% sand with compost added annually (damn - almost put anally there).

nice. we're digging a little and adding some clay into the holes. we're trying those little jiffy pellet things since i got my girl the greenhouse for v-day. she likes those things actually. just dig a hole and put the whole pellet and seeding in.

also, anal!
