Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

Had two warm weeks followed by a hard overnight freeze with ice and snow so there won't be any apples or cherries again this year.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

I have an enormous garden this year, and I just built an herb bed. I'll be growing a huge number of herbs, and a boat-load of basil specifically, so that I will be able to make a huge amount of pesto in the fall. It freezes incredibly well, and I don't like anyone else's basil recipe.

Other than that, I've started 3 varieties of tomatoes, 2 varieties of peppers, pumpkins, muskmellons, cabbage, and brussel sprouts. I have a friend with a greenhouse that starts a million things, and gives the plants away, so I don't know all of what I will plant yet.

I'll also do several varieties of potatoes - I don't plan to buy potatoes in the next year, I'm growing enough.

I'm in the process of extending my basement on the north side of my house, in order to create a cold-cellar. I'm pretty hard-core about being local with my food, and have beef, pork, and poultry all from local sources. I'm working on lamb.

I'm also helping to organise a local community garden, so I have a plot there, too. It's not huge - 20x30, so I'm going to grow nothing but flowers and a couple rows of pop-corn in that plot. I provide flowers to a local retirement home.

I also put in 8 raspberry bushes last year, and I put in 6 blueberry bushes. I hope to put in an apple and a pear tree this year.

Eventually, I want to buy virtually no produce. I like to be able to control how much pesticides/insecticides go on my food, and I have the acreage. Now, I just have to keep up with the weeds...

Heh. Nope, not a doomsday prepper. I just love gardening, and I have the time and means.

And how much fucking better does dinner taste when you grow it yourself?

:D

lol Actually, they're about the size of a saucer. Those are Mermaid roses. I got them at Chamblee's rose nursery in Tyler. They were in gallon bucket's when I bought them about four years ago. They've all got thirty-foot runners. Pictures really don't do them justice.

I was out looking through my garden since we've had a few days of rain and it's sunny and fairly nice today. I see garlic starting to come up. That makes me happy.

A saucer? As in, about the size of a small plate? That's big!

I have my herbs seeds planted, basil, coriander, parsley and tarragon. All the other herbs manage through the winter with the horseradish, mint and oregano further invading the garden.
Garlic has sprouted as have the first potato shoots.
The recent hot weather gave me an early, unexpected, asparagus crop. Home grown is so much better than the withered offerings from the supermarket.
The weeds are growing at an alarming rate too.

The roses on my fence row are really taking off.

Mermaid Rose 1
Mermaid Rose 2

Those are beautiful. The roses in my front yard are blooming now. I love the smell of them when I walk outside. I am going to plant some in my backyard next week. I would also love to build a koi pond with a huge garden around it. I think it would be peaceful.

I am planning on starting a veggie garden next week and also planting some rose bushes. I need to find veggies that can last through the heat. Any idea's? I also reseeded my yard and I am crossing my fingers it grows before it gets really hot here.

hey! u know i live close by!

you can totally do plenty of stuff that actually does ok in the heat. for instance, we have a really long tomato season. they love the sun. and corn if you are early enough.

squashes do well and if you like radishes, they are amazing here. i have no idea why but they are like beasts.

watermelon will overrun you if like those, they love the heat and grow fast.

btw, between your houses, on the sides, you can do a proper little garden as well. the shade will help. we had some amazing herbs and eggplant on the side.

I was gonna say, squally's probably got your back. ;)

As for me, I've had to bring my little seedlings in for the past week... tonight too. Freeze warnings. :( Freaky! Lots of people around here plant their gardens on Good Friday. Glad I didn't.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

Stuff is soooo early this year. My Bleeding Hearts (White and Pink) are in full bloom, as are my Primula, and today all my Columbines opened. I have big heads on my Van Gogh Irises that will open next week if it gets a little warmer again, and I already have bloom heads forming on my Poppies. The Sweet Williams should be blooming next week, too. Crazy.

Pictures, for those of us that dream of having such beautiful blooms but can't? :shy:
