Obama Accepts Reid’s Apology

Well, at least Reid didn't use the M-word (Macaca) that would definetely been hugely racist and would have had no choice but to resign, right?

If there ever were any evidence of a double standard, this is it. When a conservative says something that just appears to be a racist comment to one person, that conservative is drummed out of office even by other conservatives, but when a liberal says something that appears to be a racist comment, he is protected. How can that not be considered a double standard?

Your example doesn't hold water.George Allen Jr who had a lot more racist baggage then just "Macaca" not only was not run out of office or resign but barely lost the election he was in when he made that remark.Another example of how conservatives make racial statements and face almost zero criticism from other conservatives and survive in politics is Trent Lott who said about Strom Thurmond who ran for president as the anti desegregation candidate in 1948 that the country would have been better off if Strom had won. This is all very undertandable as many of their consitutients (the white majority) in places like Virginia and Mississippi agree with their racial views.

As to Reid Obama understands he is just a "typical white person" who makes such comments as Obama's white grandmother did without really thinking sometimes of how racist they are.

Wrong! The Lott-Thurmond ordeal was 100% politically correct bullshit ...

Another example of how conservatives make racial statements and face almost zero criticism from other conservatives and survive in politics is Trent Lott who said about Strom Thurmond who ran for president as the anti desegregation candidate in 1948 that the country would have been better off if Strom had won.
Actually, I have to 100% agree with Lott's statements -- had you actually read them. Lott's statements were not racist, they were realist.

Lott's statements were taken out-of-context. The Dixiecrats came to be out of the reality that the federal government was starting to extract too much control.

Yes, some of the Dixiecrats were racist. And yes, Thurmond made statements that could have been considered racist. Of course, Thurmond's statements made back then where no different than most Democrats and Republicans in the north too! That's the problem. When you read Thurmond today, you don't realize he's not talking any different than other Congressmen!

I invite you do read common statements and attitudes of people in the late '40s. Thurmond should never be dismissed as a racist, he was not. He is a man who tried to do many things and get people to compromise, especially in a American South that had spent 80 years under the thumb of those outside the American South. The "slavery" card had been played way, way too long on the American South, ignoring repeat transgressions by those outside the south as an excuse to do what they wanted.

Ironically, he really was a man who really lusted for black booty and saw African-Americans as equals. Just ask several of his peers who are African American (and don't go to Jessie Jackson, he's a political engine, not representative). Lott was trying to convey that too many people don't appreciate Thurmond for who he was and what he tried to do, and dismiss him as a racist. There are many things in the Dixiecrat platform that are actually good and just.

The problem has always been that people pushing slavery and racism have "nuked" the positive reasoning. And they've used the terms in the platform do wrongly defend slavery and racism. Even today, people chalk the Republic of Texas as a bunch of Americans who wanted to own slaves and that's why they fought Mexico.

No, no, it had nothing to do with Santa Anna shredding the Mexican Constitution, declaring himself a dictator and the Texans stating they merely wanted a return to the 1824 government.

Sorry, but to demonize Lott-Thurmond like this is to miss some important lessons.

Friday, you always make this about Democrats and Republicans, and solely state Republican examples over and over, ignoring the Democrat ones. Sorry, this is all 100% political bullshit, and you're just adding to it. It is not racism to defend several of the ideals of the Dixiecrats or the creation of Confederate States of America. In fact, it is required understanding in history.

Doesn't mean I'm a racist or agree with slavery or racism. Let's just separate the facts and statements that are not racist from those that are, instead of nuking anyone and anything that touches it.

Reid said something that was pretty stupid, and he probably should have thought about it before he opened his mount, but I find the people that actually try to compare this to Lott's statements talking about nonsense. Reid's statements while poorly said, don't even come remotely close to being as bad.

Lott was praising Thurmond and essentially said the country would have better off with somebody that was the champion of segregation running it. Even if there might have been a few good things about Thurmond you can't separate out one part from the other. Now Lott might not have been thinking before he opened his mouth either, but at the VERY BEST he was just mindlessly telling people what he though they wanted to hear without even caring he might be lying or being a complete fool while doing it, and at the very worst he was completely racist. Reid's statement don't even come close.

Who cares what Reid said, if Obama accepts it then so be it. The Black community should be outraged at what was said. Hell they turned on Tiger cause he was banging white chicks.

At least Lott never used the word Negro in his statement. People forget that Storm ran for President in 1948 Jim Crowe was alive and strong in the South still. And it was not untill Johnson came into the oval office that Jim Crowe was gone. So Storm if President would have affected absolutly nothing.

Anybody else see The Colbert Report yesterday? He said Negro at least 10 times and had the audience chanting it as well. Morgan Freeman didn't say it though, he just stood there stoically. That was hilarious.

Yes, I realize Colbert is a satirist, but it's still entertaining. He plays a better over the top Conservative than some of the members here. Of course he's doing it for laughs, we just laugh at the ones here...

oh how witty.

When voting your choices are not limited to D and R, it is your fault that you did not vote for a good President, there is a spot that you can write names in.

Yeah.......I'll be sure to show up next election to write down my ONE name. That'll work. Not to mention waste my time.

That's about the equivalent of me voting The Jonas Brothers as best metal band.

How does it???

Yeah.......I'll be sure to show up next election to write down my ONE name. That'll work. Not to mention waste my time.
How does it "waste your time" to "vote your conscience"?

That's about the equivalent of me voting The Jonas Brothers as best metal band.
Really? So what you're saying is that there are no qualified candidates except Democrats or Republicans? So no other party representative or independents that achieved thousands upon thousands of signatures to get on the ballot are qualified candidates?

And you wonder why we get the government we do?

Why is Reid apologizing?
He's a strong supporter of Obama's, so it clearly wasn't said out of malice, or denigration.
And what he said is true, those two factors DID make Obama a more electable black man.

Obama's going to quickly forget him when Reid gets soundly thrown out in the fall.

Yes, it's a waste of time. They have no chance of winning.

I'm not saying they aren't qualified......I'm saying they have no chance. (Though, you're right, my example was poor.....The Jonas Brothers aren't qualified to be best metal band lol).

Did any of the other party representatives or independents even get anywhere near 2nd place? I rest my case.
