Looooong term contracts. Maybe it's 2012 Syndrome, perhaps the gm's around the league think the world is going to end or something so... why not?!
Oh it was definitely an upgrade to the team. It was a weak year for free agents though. Like I said, Suter isn't elite, someone cheaper could have been had that would make the same amount of difference (btw just saw Matt Carle is getting $33 million over 6 years, wtf is going on??). It's like in the last couple of years, just above average players are getting huge contracts. Makes no sense, what happens if they don't pan out or get hurt. It makes no sense lately. I think the best signing was probably Winnipeg getting Jokinen. Myself as a Leafs fan, wasn't interested in Burke going after any of the free agents this year, aside from Jokinen, so good job 'Peg.
Btw, Heatley used to be my favorite player until he pulled that stunt in Ottawa. One Wild player I can say I really like is Backstrom. What I wouldn't give to have him on the Leafs. He is so underrated.
I believe NHL.com has Suter is a top 5 defenseman. That's definitely elite.
Weber, Staal, Markov (when healthy), Karlsson and Letang. That's five better off the top of my head lol
They obviously don't.
Staal, not quite yet. Markov, maybe three years ago. However, I do agree that it is easy to name five defencemen off the top of my head that are superior to Ryan Suter: Zdeno Chara, Shea Weber, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Drew Doughty
They didn't win either!
I'd take Staal over Suter. I guess with Markov, it's hard to tell since he never plays lol. We didn't even mention Duncan Keith, Brian Campbell or Dan Girardi. There are lots I would take over Suter that are younger as well like Alex Pietrangelo or Oliver Ekman-Larsson. I think the NHL.com writer who put Suter in the top five had to have been American (since Suter is).
So by your reasoning, 29 teams stink? Yeah, makes sense.
Has anyone heard who the new captain is going to be for the Wings?!?!?!
Hasn't been decided yet as far as I know, I think they will pick a new C when training camp starts... I suspect its gonna be H. Zetterberg unless he turns it down. :2 cents:

In related wings news, Lidstrom has signed on to be one of their Swedish scouts:

The captaincy is between Datsyuk and Zetterberg, and for whatever reason Zetterberg just seems more fit for the spot to me.
great all we need is more small soft euro's coming to the Red Wings..
I think the Red Wings should rock the boat right now.. while the Preds GM has a moral conundrum on his hands, considering the upcoming status with Shea Weber, Nashville already knows that there hopes to keep Weber is slim and none, after Weber saw what Suter got, he's counting the days to cash in on a long-term deal that's gonna make him the highest paid D-Man in the league, so Nashville should just trade him now before they are left with NADA.. That's the progressive / aggressive approach the pens took with Jordan Staal, now the Red Wings should just ante up and make Weber there top priority. they missed on Suter because of family ties, now they can't afford to let Weber get away. The Red Wings should pursue Weber with all the marbles on the table right now, sort of speak. a D-Man that can make or break a franchise only comes around every so often, Detroit needs to jump on this NOW. :2 cents:
