Does anybody think there should be a restriction on the length of contracts?

Depends. I think it's bullshit to give a thirty-year old a ten year contract because so very few players play for so long at a high level, but if you're going to give a player in his early twenties (Read: Sidney Crosby) a long term contract, I don't have a problem with it because it'll expire before he is forty and, with a player of his talent, you know he will still be a productive player in his mid-thirties and likely still a member of the same team. If anything I'd say they should limit contract lengths depending on how long a player has been playing professionally; a thirty year old can only get x amount of years, where a twenty year old can get more.

Minnesota seems to be the front runner for Parise.

He just bought a big ass pad on Minnetonka where all the pro players like to reside, it seems. He's got lots of ties here in many different ways.

Frankly I'm getting sick of hearing about him. Great player, yes, and a local boy so I wouldn't mind him in one of our sweaters. We need more D though...

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
Suter and Parise both go to wild!!:brick::die: I never really gave a fuck about parise coming to detroit, it would have been nice, but I wasn't holding my breath for him, but I am pretty bummed/pissed about Suter going to the fuckin Wild!! :surprise::wtf:

I Like Big Tits! (song by Joe Walsh)
Holy shit ... Wild sign both Parise and Suter  Thought Parise would stay in NJ with Brodeur re-signing and Suter would go to either the Pens or Wings.

The Wild should be a contender now with all their talent.

Raaaaaage

Because we're going to be re-aligned to your division soon? :suspicious:

I would watch out for that team; I've spent a number of nights watching them both in person and on FSN. Their goaltenders are nasty as hell. We'll see how they hold together this season in the injuries department. I believe we led the NHL last year in injuries/games missed and call ups.

I'm trying to envision how Parise is going to fit in the top 6 - with guys like Seto, Koivu, Heater, PMB, and all the young talent we have coming in in the next couple seasons. Should be fun though for a change to be a fan.

Here's a look now:

FORWARDS
Pierre-Marc Bouchard ($4.080m) / Mikko Koivu ($6.750m) / Dany Heatley ($7.500m)
Zach Parise ($7.538m) / Mikael Granlund ($2.100m) / Devin Setoguchi ($3.000m)
Matt Cullen ($3.500m) / Kyle Brodziak ($2.833m) / Cal Clutterbuck ($1.400m)
Darroll Powe ($1.067m) / Zenon Konopka ($0.925m) / Torrey Mitchell ($1.900m)
Matt Kassian ($0.575m) / Stephane Veilleux ($0.600m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Ryan Suter ($7.538m) / Tom Gilbert ($4.000m)

Oh you're one of those Wings fans. Detroit doesn't win every year so it's all on the goalie.

You know Vernon and Osgood both won cups, right? And you're using them as an example of failure?? Vernon won a Conne Smythe for fucks sake. Osgood is a (probably undeserved) hall of famer. Howard has won at least 35 games every year he's been the starter. But ya, let's trade him.

I'm actually not one of those fans. This year it was the officiating (just as the same with the penguin series a couple years ago, and for the plain fact that Butt-man was there for the first game in the Nashville series,) lack of young fresh players mix with talented player, the seemingly lack of drive to win, and yes, the goalies. The goaltender can win 6 gazillion games during the regular season, but they aren't as important as winning playoff games. I'm just saying we need better goaltenders. Howard is starting to become the next Osgood. But yet that seems like a common goalie trend here in Detroit.

Suter playing in front of Backstrom. Scary thought. I think the Wild just leapfrogged into the playoffs and could be top in the Northwest if Schneider isn't all he is made out to be for the Canucks.

It certainly wasn't because Nashville had a superior team. Definitely not.

Not to dis your glory, nor am I hating, but I am only upset with Suter signing with the Wild, he will always be the 2nd fiddle in Minny behind Parise now. and no matter how that team plays out, how they perform, what success these signing have done for the Wild, I have no Jealousy whatsoever, I am just a Red Wings fan looking @ a team with HOLES in its defense and Suter would have plugged a major amount of those holes..

Suter passed up the opportunity to be the # 1 D-man for an original 6 team, and we all know the rest of the perks that Suter would have gotten here in Detroit, playing for the Red Wings, I care nothing about the Wild coming to our division or anything else except the Red Wings present holes, goodluck to Suter, although I wouldn't be surprised if he's seeking a trade in a few years, and we'll see if the Wild win lord Stanley before the Red Wings do. :D :dunno::rolleyes:

Oh yes, we have "holes" in our D, but there are some nice studs coming up in the next couple. This year if we stay healthy with that lineup we finish top 4 in the West.

As far as Suter and Parise, they both have a shitload of ties to the state and local communities; people on my NHL board are calling this a "Lebron-Bosh" move, which is just stupid. I think it's nice to see some amount of loyalty to your home like these guys have:

Zach Parise is from MIN and Ryan Suter is from the neighboring state of WI.
Suter played for current MIN majority owner, Craig Leipold, who, like the Suter clan, is originally from Wisconsin.
Suter's agent is a college teammate of MIN Wild major shareholder, Phil Falcone -- they remain very good friends.
MIN acquired Tom Gilbert likely because of his ties to both Parise and Suter (giving MIN the pre-July 1 inside track on communication).

There's more...enter Ryan Suter's wife, beautiful Becky. Becky is a business school grad from University of Wisconsin. Ryan Suter met her there during his one and only year playing for the Badgers. She is originally from Minneapolis -- they were married at the golf course a stone's throw away from Zach Parise's new lakeside house in the upscale Minnetonka area).

Ultimately, it may be Suter's wife responsible for Shea Weber's eventual exit from NSH.

Shea Weber seemed content to sign a multi-year deal with NSH back in 2010. But as contract talks gradually wore on, I suspect his buddy Suter at some point told him, "Hey Shea, I don't know if you really want to sign a long term deal, brah. I think there's a good chance I might be signing elsewhere my deal is up."

I think Suter wants out because he wants to do something nice for his wife, who still lists herself as working for her dad's real estate firm, which is in Minneapolis. It just so happens, Zach Parise is also from Minneapolis and he and Ryan Suter are known to be friends. I think those two have a plan that involves the Wild.

Parise bought a lake front mansion in suburban Minneapolis last summer and will be married, (likely) at the golf course across from his house, to his North Dakota fiancee, Alisha Woods, on July 21. Suter and his wife were married at that same country club a few years ago.

Minnesota just wasted so much money. Parise is fairly overrated. Not saying he is bad, but in no way a superstar. And Suter is a decent defenceman. Not among the elite though. This is such a boring offseason!

Because we're going to be re-aligned to your division soon? :suspicious:

No. Because we have nobody to replace Lidstrom and Stuart. I'm not worried about Minnesota. Don't worry.

Sometimes a team is just better. It's ok to admit that.

Big time. Rumour has it they are going for a max of 5 years in the new CBA. I hope that goes through. I see why a player would sign it, but with more and more of these contracts, free agents are gonna be hard to come by.

I will remain standoffish on both Parise and Suter like I did on the Heater and Seto deals. These obscenely long contracts of this new era just seem odd to me and I'm not sold on them. There is one thing you can't say about these additions: we aren't a worse team than before and honestly are probably quite a bit better with these additions.

Oh it was definitely an upgrade to the team. It was a weak year for free agents though. Like I said, Suter isn't elite, someone cheaper could have been had that would make the same amount of difference (btw just saw Matt Carle is getting $33 million over 6 years, wtf is going on??). It's like in the last couple of years, just above average players are getting huge contracts. Makes no sense, what happens if they don't pan out or get hurt. It makes no sense lately. I think the best signing was probably Winnipeg getting Jokinen. Myself as a Leafs fan, wasn't interested in Burke going after any of the free agents this year, aside from Jokinen, so good job 'Peg.

Btw, Heatley used to be my favorite player until he pulled that stunt in Ottawa. One Wild player I can say I really like is Backstrom. What I wouldn't give to have him on the Leafs. He is so underrated.
