The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
Dear Mauser98k and Thunderbolt,

Hope you enjoyed the Lightning game today as much as I did. :)

Sincerely,

"egregious. "exactly what should have happened". tomato, tomahto.

If you think that Ovechkin should've been suspended as he was then that's your opinion, but when you defend (more like deny) what Downie did and then say that the suspension on Ovechkin is valid, that's just insane. I know you love the Lightning, but what Ovechkin did was not nearly as bad as what Downie did. The only reason he was suspended was because Campbell got injured, which is the point the article is making, and is one I completely agree with. If Ovechkin deserved a suspension for what he did then so did Downie.

that's not what i said at all. if Downie really wanted to hurt Crosby, he could have. how people can see a falling Downie and say he meant to land precisely where he did on Crosby's leg is beyond me.

How someone can watch that clip and not see the obvious intent to injure is beyond me. However, I do understand that you're blinded by your love of the Lightning.

i knew there'd be people who blame Downie for something he didn't try to do. he followed through on his check and fell on Crosby's leg. it happens. there was nothing purposeful about that.

Yeah, more people than just me too. Lots of people. Most people. Probably close to every person who viewed that play objectively. I know one person who viewed it my way, and that's Greg Wyshynski, award-winning sports writer who is the creator and editor of Puck Daddy, the most popular hockey blog in the world. He saw it just the way that I did, objectively. I really liked the way he said it too:

"If only Ovechkin had the good sense to place Campbell in a Scorpion Death Lock along the boards like Steve Downie, he might have avoided suspension. But then Sidney Crosby came back and played, right? Suspensions are only for the injurious, not the ones with intentions to injure."

P.S. The way you describe the play here makes it seem like you either didn't see it, or only saw it once or twice and have since created a false memory of how the actual play happened. There was no "check" involved in the play at all. Crosby had just dumped the puck and was gliding into the zone and Downie came up from behind and clearly stuck his knee right between Crosby's legs and then pulls his knee down to the ice, pulling Crosby's leg with it and then pressing down on Crosby's knee, causing it to bend awkwardly. Watch this clip if you're still mistaken: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHeh3tyUL10
Even the announcers are saying that it was a dirty play and an intent to injure. Every title for a video of the play on the internet either says "cheap shot" or "attempt to injure." If you care to respond, please watch the clip in full, it shows the play repeatedly and from every angle available, so there's very little chance of seeing it as something other than what it really was.

Downie is such a piece of shit. Kick his ass out of the NHL.

Some people are really funny on this thread , and oh you're so right Downie should have been suspended 25 games for his diabolical attempt to injure crosby by timing his hit just right to entangle his legs with him and fall just at the right moment on his knee while he was falling himself. I think he is a genius and a master at falling on player's knees. And I think we should kick all the pieces of shit with 17 goals , 23 assists , 40 points , +17 out of the NHL , GREAT IDEA !!!

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning announced on Tuesday that forward Ryan Malone underwent a minor procedure on his left knee.

Malone, who has compiled 21 goals and 44 points in 65 games for the Bolts, is slated to miss 10-to-14 days. His rehabilitation time will also include treatments for an undisclosed upper-body injury that had kept him out of three games prior to the surgery.

neither do the multiple players and announcers who all agree that wasn't a dirty hit and there was no intent.

*exasperated sigh*

Multiple as in more than one, but the multiple of which you speak is vastly outnumbered by those of the opposing opinion. I haven't heard a non-delusional Lightning fan agree with you as of yet. Downie was fined, by the way. His lack of suspension was merely due to a lack of injury to Crosby. I think I'm done with this (unless you say something really stupid that forces me to respond), so I will continue to be of the same opinion as the vast majority of educated hockey fans and experts, and you can continue to deny the obvious intentionality and heinous nature of the play in question. I humbly agree to disagree. Cheers and Happy St. Patrick's Day to all. Be sure to drink Guinness and Jameson until you can't walk straight. :glugglug:

Hawks tryin to mix it up tonight with Crawford. Watchin' it on the NHL channel. Ugh. Want the Hawks to win a title before the god damn Cubs win one before I die. I have my money on the Hawks, but they gotta get that netminder situated. :(

The clip shows the hit in real time and then shows two replays in slow motion, one from each side of the play. You have to watch the full video to see them all, if you're interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHeh3tyUL10

That's the link I saw. Just can't fully see it.

'R' used to do that shit in practice to people (did it to me once) like Dan Boyle did in the olympics but it wasn't as pronounced as it seems in the clip. I don't think he was trying to injure Crosby but it appears he was trying to take him down.

How can you not see that? He's pulling a fuckin UFC move on Crosby!!! I hate Downie. Farva! I'm on your side this time.

The clip dun lie.

To you maybe... but to me and many others it doesn't. Anyway you can think what you want about Downie , he is a good player that has been dirty once at the start of his career ( late hit on Dean McAmmond ) but since then he has been a very intense player but not dirty. People keep wanting to label him as a dirty player no matter what he does. At least watch a few Lightning games and you'll see that he is just a good intense guy that gives everything he's got every night.

Early in his career, later in his career, all throughout his career. How about this for dirty:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAfGjAcq1Co

And here's a little bit about Steve Downie's career of idiocy:
http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2009/03/01/more-trouble-for-steve-downie/

He is a pretty good player, but he's always been a dirty player. He has 196 PIMs this season, third most in the league. He wasn't dirty "once in his career," he's consistently done a dirty thing here and a dirty thing there throughout the course of his hockey career. All you were aware of, apparently, was the McAmmond incident; there have been many others. At least watch a few non-Lightning games so you can get some exposure to players outside of Tampa. This may be Downie's first incident since he joined your team, but it's just another incident down a long line of dirty incidents in Downie's career. He's still only 22 years old and he's already done all this.

The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
Vancouver and San Jose square off tonight. A win by the Canucks, coupled with another victory by Phoenix tonight will put the Desert Dogs within three points of the Sharks for top spot in the Pacific.

Bitchin.
