NHL '09/'10 Season Thread

It's sort of what our football friends would call a "clip" (at least from the way I saw it earlier). It does appear he clipped'm.

Football clipping is different. You don't go headfirst into the boards. If that had been done at centre ice, there would be no major penalty. Honestly, I think (and I'm dumb as a sack of wet hair trimmed from Greg's anus) that was a pretty intentional shove which resulted in a player going headfirst into the boards. Plain and simple, that's a major penalty. The rules are the same for everyone: when you get near the boards, think differently about how you hit someone. I know that shit can happen unintentionally. Still a rule, and a good one, I believe.

But you're welcome to shove me into the boards any time. If you think you could. I played defence in Belleville for a few years... :D

I don't think the extensiveness of a players injury should have any bearing on the penalty.

This is entirely right.

Ok, so can we all just agree that the only teams that have a real shot of winning the Cup this year are Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and New Jersey in the East, and San Jose, Vancouver, Phoenix, and (maybe) Los Angeles in the West. Cause, you know, they are the only teams with good goalies apparently.

Nabokov has been shit in past playoffs, so that means he can't be good in this years playoffs. Count San Jose out.

Uhm, Roloson is another goalie that is mediocre that proves my point.

Is great goaltending essential to a cup run? Yes.

Do you need a great goaltender to get great goaltending? Nope.

:nono: Toronto is winning this year. Mark my words.
:rofl2: Yeah. I'm a dumb Toronto fan.

Washington and San Jose choke in the playoffs year after year. I hope not, I'd like to see Washington go the distance, just for shits and giggles (cause my team sucks goat balls).

I think Chicago is a contender. I know the net minding situation is troublesome, but they may do it yet...

No fuck you they don't have good goaltending! They aren't going to do shit they are going to exit in the first round!!!! You don't know fucking nothing about hockey!!!!!

A friend of mine bet me $50 that Toronto would win a cup before Crosby and Ovechkin. Crosby's got one. Ovechkin has a serious chance to get one. Lets goooo Washington.

Don't hold back, Plasma. How do you feel about Chicago's chances? You agree with me, right?

Yeah, I'll get behind that. You can buy the next bottle of Hennessey if you win. If you don't win, you can buy the next bottle of Hennessey.

Well my linesmate went DI to SCSU and is playing pro in Europe right now. :D If I wasn't so g'damned lazy and so small, I'd have went somewhere as well (probably DII).

I haven't been saying that at all in any of my posts. You should go back and read them. You're being an idiot with posts like this one. If they have bad goaltending in the first round then they will be out in the first round.

I already said in one of my previous posts that I look at Washington as a favourite. I made the point that in order for them to go all the way that Varlamov or Theodore will have to elevate their level of play to a stellar level in order for that to happen, otherwise it won't.

That's what I'm saying. Mediocre goalies can get hot in the playoffs and go all the way. You don't have to have an elite goalie to win the cup. I'm not saying mediocre goaltending will win the cup. You can't just write a team off because their goalies are unproven or have a bad track record.

It may be what you're saying now that I proved you wrong, but it's not what you were saying before. You said that "the team in front of the goalie is just as, if not more important than the goalie" and you said that "Washington can overcome mediocre goaltending to go all the way." Now you're saying something different, and what's funny is that you're saying exactly what I've been saying, even though you've been disagreeing with me all along. Now that I proved you wrong you're simply making the same statement I've been making and making it seem like you came up with it on your own.

And if you read my posts, that's what I've been saying all along. That you can't go all the way in the playoffs with anything less than stellar goaltending. It's the point I've been making all along. I never wrote any team off in any way, I merely made the point that goaltending matters most and that without it being stellar a team won't win the Cup.

You guys are being morons. You're pretending that I've said things like Chicago and Washington have no chance and I've already written them off because their goaltending is bad. It's just so stupid that you have to pretend I've been saying something I haven't in order to hide the fact that everything I've been saying is 100% correct and that you were stupid to disagree with it because you didn't know or understand.

How exactly did you prove me wrong? I've been saying the same thing the entire time. How is the team in front of the goalie not as important as the goalie? Varlamov can have a 1.00 GAA and a .997 Save %, but if nobody scores, wtf is the point? I've never once said great goaltending wasn't important. All I said was a great goaltender isn't necessary for a cup run. I'm not wrong, I'm not right. you're not wrong, you're not right.

Are we all supposed to bow down to your intellectual superiority when it comes to hockey? Get real man. Accept other people have different opinions on the game. Get your superiority bullshit out of here. Besides, we're all having fun here. Take a chill pill.

Well, from my perspective - playing on teams with shit goalies since I was 5, until I was 18 - I can say that the goalie is the most important piece to the puzzle. We once played this team from across town and had 60 shots on this little shit goalie (best in the state, IMO), and we lost 1-0.

I don't disagree at all that an all star team with a shit goalie can do good, but I'm just sayin, goalie is very important. But if you have a decent goalie and a good team, absolutely you can go all the way.

:2 cents:

I proved you wrong with your Detroit example and when you said that Giguere and Khabibulin weren't excellent. You haven't been saying the same thing the whole time. If all you were saying is that you don't need a great goaltender for a cup run, then why were you disagreeing with anything that I said. Your most recent post was the first time that you made the correct statement that a goaltender can get hot in the postseason and carry his team to a championship. If that's what you were trying to say from the beginning then you had a funny way of conveying it. And your point that a goalie can have a 1.00 GAA and .997 Sv% and still lose is pretty weak considering that in order for that to happen the opposing goalie would have to record a shutout, so the goaltender for the winning team would have to play a flawless game. You don't have to bow down to my intellectual superiority when it comes to hockey, but I would suggest knowing what you're posting about before posting it. The Detroit example displayed some clear ignorance of how those postseasons played out. I'm having fun too. Don't need a chill pill.

It's weird that there is a debate going on about Osgood's skill level because everytime Detroit makes it to the playoffs I hear people question whether or not he has it in him to lead the team to the Cup. No matter how good he plays, it always comes up.

another blown lead as a result of poor play by the Lightning. who could have seen that coming...besides me of course?

it's annoying to hear the Lightning broadcasters talk about "if the Lightning can make the playoffs...". they can't. they won't. not the way they play. stop talking about it.

That play by Steve Downie on Crosby was despicable. He only got two minutes for it. Shameful. I know the rules are the rules and that's why Ovechkin got a game misconduct for his play on Campbell, but it didn't look to me like Ovechkin was intentionally trying to hurt him, in fact, it only looked like a light push to me. No doubt what it led to was ugly and the call was fair according to the rules of the game, but when I see the play that Downie makes on Crosby and hear that he only gets two minutes for it, it just sickens me. Downie's play was dirty and it was an intentional attempt to injure a star player. Downie gets two and Ovechkin gets a game misconduct. Out of whack.
