The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
In the battle of two of my three favourite teams, Phoenix tops Vancouver 4-3 in a shootout. I find whenever they play I root for Phoenix to win. In my mind they need the win more than Vancouver does; Vancouver's fans will always be there, but Phoenix needs every win they can get to help rebuild their fanbase. And it seems to be working; attendance to the game tonight was 15,000 strong. It's going to be a long road if the Coyotes want to be a success in the desert, but their performance this season, along with a respectible playoff run, are good first steps. That, and because Phoenix isn't the top in their division, I feel more insecure about their position in the playoffs. Every win keeps them ahead of Los Angeles (who I hope get sixth or seventh instead of fifth so Phoenix/Los Angeles isn't a first round matchup).

In any case, I think Tippett has all but wrapped-up the Jack Adams Award this season.

it's great being in the same position we've been in since 2006...

I've been sitting here and reading all about the Lightning for about two years now from Thunderbolt and you, and you know something? I'm starting to get depressed that the Lightning aren't playing good myself. Curse you two and your team's inconsistency!

They have all it takes to win the cup... except goaltending.

I think if the Caps can play like they did when they were on their 13-game streak, they'll be just fine. Their offence can make up for their lack of a superstar goaltender and I think Theodore/Varlamov can cover them well enough for them to make a serious run.

 sorry, mate. That's a tough loss...

the season is lost for us. we have no chance of making the playoffs. now i just want to see physical play.

we have Mitch Fritz and have yet to use him. we might as well, as it will have no impact on our season either way.

Nothing is more important than goaltending in the postseason. It is possible that the Caps offence will be able to overcome their less than stellar goaltending in the postseason, but in all likelihood, goaltending will be the difference should they face a team like Pittsburgh. The game changes in the postseason and becomes a defensive-minded game. Goaltending always makes the biggest difference, but maybe not this year because I think Washington is an exceptional team and one of the favourites. Who knows, maybe Varlamov, or more likely Theodore in my opinion, stands on his head and makes the difference for the Caps in a good way. Either way, I think if the Caps are going to win the Cup or make it to the Cup Finals, their goaltending needs to be better than it has been.

Question to anyone who knows: Who was the goaltender for Pittsburgh when they won their two Cups in 91/92?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Was Tom Barrasso.

That can be true in the regular season but in the playoffs , history shows that teams with bad/average goaltenders can't win the cup. So I predict the caps will lose in the second round like last year. Oh and Bolts win in washington tonight , who whould have thought !

Well, while I'm on this thread, I might as well point out my earlier post. Penguins won their first two Cups with Tom Barrasso in net. Looking at his stats, he was a pretty average goalie. All it takes is a good run in the playoffs, and I think Theodore can play good in the playoffs.

Chris Osgood is a pretty average goalie. He's won a few cups. Khabibulin, Turco, Giguere, are all average goalies that have won cups. Any goalie can get hot.
