NFL '10/'11 Season Thread.

I think Chili miscalculated bringing the clown Favre back--that has blown up in his face.

He pretty much had to. Who else was he going to go with, Jackson? A large part of the problem he is in now is him not being able to get a decent permanent
solution at quarterback for all those years, so he pretty much made his fate linked with Favre's. He got lucky last year when Favre had one of his best years, but now that Favre's looking more like an old mistake prone quarterback on his last legs it's not working out and he has nowhere else to go. The defense seems to be declining also which for the Viking will be their final nail in the coffin.

I hope that Moss lands a job he might be a little trouble off the field but what I hear from the experts that he is a great football player

Lost a bet with Phoenix Marie on the Bills/Chiefs game (I'm a Bills fan; she's a Chiefs fan).

Loser puts the other team's logo as a TwitPic for a week.

K.C. won with seconds left in OT, so I blew the bet.

:dunno:
But, from what we all have seen this year....he or his ego. is not worth 3 million or whatever the actual amount is!
:spump:

he still has talent tho...ego or no ego...it's just performing to that effort...maybe no one will want him...i mean he was kissing ass to his former team right after the game, when they got destroyed

Ridiculous. He's a HOFer and from what I've heard there are several teams interested in him. I doubt he slides past St Louis if he gets to them. 3 mil 5 hundred k is shit by todays standards and the risk is well worth it. Question though, is there any way to move up at a shot at him in the waiver system.

BTW @ Phoenix Marie - you have great taste in football.

no, their isnt a way to move up....must go in order, no trading guys or picks to move up to get a waiver spot...

great receivers who he had the benefit of playing a long time along side of.

Some, including me, would say those receivers are great because of Peyton. He'll go down as the greatest QB of all time and that's hard for me to say. I have a lot of love for Montana, but Peyton is just incredible.

He's not the greatest QB because of Super Bowl failures....Bradshaw, Brady, Montana, Young, Aikman, Elway have him beat.

I think a better argument is who is better Favre or Peyton?

That's exactly what I mean about Peyton getting too much credit in some cases. It's clear if you watch the Colts they do just about everything well and to the extent that they have failed in the past to get to the SB or get beat in the playoffs it's been due to happy feet Manning choking.

Peyton has mastered reading defenses and his entire offense benefits from this but Manning has had EVERYTHING a QB could ever want to be successful. A near lockdown defense, capable running game and receivers with glue for hands.

I would say Payton makes everybody around him look better than vice versa. It's gotten to the point where it looks like he makes pretty much any mediocre receiver look good on the Colts. He makes his offensive line looks WAAAAYYYYY better than what they are almost solely because of him behind it. While things like touchdowns, yards, and lack of interceptions people know he's better than anybody else in what people seldom mention or think about is the fact he has gotten sacked and fumbled much less that others throughout his career. Marvin Harrison might be the best receiver of his generation with the exception of Moss, but I have a very hard time believing that Gonzalez, Collie, Garcon, others like them throughout the years, and even Reggie Wane would be anywhere near to what they are without him. He makes Dallas Clark seem like one of the best tight ends in the league and if he went to almost any other team Clark would come crashing down to Earth unlike people like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates who would still do good on other teams. Manning runs his offense with more control and say in how it's done on the field than any other quarterback in the last twenty to thirty years and it been the best offense for that length of time than any other team. I could also point out that Manning has never gotten seriously hurt and has started a long time. He has the most current consecutive games played by a quarterback behind only Favre, and if it wasn't for the career of Favre he would have probably eventually broken the record on that and be more well known for the amount of games he's played.

I also find it baffling you somehow think he's had a good running game throughout his career. Saying that he ever had a lockdown defense is laughable. I can't remember a single year he as been there most people though the Colts defense was great or even above average. Most years since he's been there the Colts where lucky to even have an average defense, and most of the time even that wasn't the case. At best the defense it good when the Colts get a decent lead (because of the offense and Manning) and forced the other team to continually throw late in the game so they can play more to the Colts defense strength, and limit where they continually get gashed on runs all the time. The Colts running game has only been good, in the years where it is actually good, because every team they plays against them is thinking pass first and goes to great lengths to mitigate the pass. Over the years the Colts have probably faced fewer 8 man fronts than any other team, and that's while every defender is thinking about the pass first.

As far as them not making the Superbowl that has as much to do with the fact that the AFC has been very stacked at the top by four or five teams for the last ten years. The Colts where always competing against the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, and Broncos. The NFC had only the Eagles that have been constantly good over that time, and if any of those AFC teams there were in the other conference instead they would have all had a much easier time to the Superbowl in the last decade. An even bigger reason is that the playoffs are a small sample size of games or any system where if you lose once and you're out has a large amount of luck involved that can never be mitigated. A lot of teams throughout the years would have went further or maybe even won it all if just one or two plays went differently. The year the Steelers won the Superbowl comes to mind where Ben somehow got back and tackled the Colt player as he was running down the field after Jerome Bettis fumbled near the Colt's goal line. There is just a lot of random factors that account for playoff runs. Also, some of the times the other team was just a little bit better. It's silly to judge individual performance based on team accomplishment and it's especially nonsensical to judge the skill of an individual player on a team sport by how many championships that teams has when that person was there. Yes, there were times that a team's 53 players, plus coaching staff, plus training staff, plus scouting department, plus management, plus ownership ended up being better than another team with all those things that Manning happened to be a part of.

I will concede that one of Manning few flaws early in his career was his ability to sometimes get flushed out of the pocket too easily and he didn't throw that good on the run, but he pretty much wiped that flaw out, like what, 7 or 8 years ago if not longer.

If you want to see quarterbacks that won because they had "EVERYTHING" you should look to some of the people on Titsrock's list like with Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw. I would take somebody like Marino over them any day. I would even take people lower down the notoriety scale that never won a Superbowl like Dan Fouts or Ken Anderson over them. Even a good chunk of Brady career was kind of lackluster compared to perception. He was very good over a long period of time, but until 2007 I never had years that could really be considered great.

Maybe even if Manning's career stopped tomorrow I think he could be considered the best quarterback ever. There could be a good argument in the future between Manning and Jim Brown for who the best football player in history is. Manning still looks like he has years left at a very high production level. I say this as somebody who isn't even a fan of the Colts. I just can't turn away from the truth or go with blind conventional wisdom about football that doesn't hold up, or even things that just don't make sense.

Teams win super bowls. The Patriots were the best team of the past 10 years. Great players win MVP's. And Manning has more than anybody. Ever. He'll also probably have more passing yards, more passing touchdowns, highest TD-INT ratio, most wins by a quarterback, and countless other records. He's the greatest QB of all time. There really is no debate.

How the hell is Young better than Manning? He also only has 1 Super Bowl win, and half the career stats that Manning has. Manning passed him in pretty much every major category a long time ago. Along with all those other guys you named.

Bradshaw - Best team of the 70's.
Montana - Best team of the 80's.
Aikman/Elway - Best teams of the 90's.
Brady - Best team of the 00's.

Manning - Better stats than all of those guys, plus a Super Bowl MVP. Do you judge best RB's by the amount of Super Bowls they win? WR's? Kickers? I bet you don't say Emmitt Smith or Franco Harris are better then Jim Brown or Barry Sanders, so why are Brady or Aikman better than Manning or Marino?

I'm not sure where you get your facts from but for example, the Colts have been extraordinarily good at personnel acquisitions during Manning's career there...Starting with taking Manning when many thought maybe Ryan Leaf was better. We know how that turned out.

The next year they picked Edgerrin James when everyone thought they should have taken Ricky Williams..how'd that turn out? Dovetailing on that James was a 1500 yard a season RB for most of his 6 or 7 years with Manning. No running game?? He had one of the most prolific RBs in the league in the backfield with him.

Defense...when Dungy came to Indy...he brought with him one of the best defenses since the Bear 46 defense in the Tampa 2. Not to mention 2 of the most dominant players at their position in the game in Sanders and Freeney.

Manning had the ability to throw to the best WR tandem in the game for at least 8 years...Harrison since '98 and Wayne since '01.

I could go on and on but why? If you don't see this and all the rest..we just simply disagree....in that Manning as gotten great but was a choker and had a great team and coaches around him nearly his entire career.
