To be fair I don't entirely blame Billichick for wanting to go for it there and in some ways can see why he would. When you have the Patriots offense there is a good change you will pick up the first down, the Patriots had been moving the ball good all game, you have Manning and the Colts on the other side of the ball, and the Colts drove down the field just a little bit earlier. I can see him thinking that if they punted there was a good chance Manning would probably just drive the 60 or 70 yards needed (instead of the short distance he ended up needing), but if you could pick up that first down the game was practically over. I think people are blaming him for the outcome of the decision and not the quality of the decision, which isn't the best for evaluating a decision, and if it would have worked out people would be proclaiming how great it was. He is one of the few people that has the credit to even make those kinds of decisions.
