The Yankees vs Red Sox game is pretty good. 8-7 Boston in the bottom of the 7th. First lead Boston has had the whole game. I hate both these teams, but you gotta love the rivalry.

The bottom end of the sox lineup showed a lot more finesse than I expected to see this early in the season. I really hope they can continue to do this.

Just joined the thread. Best time of the year for sports is right now. Baseball season just starting, hockey and basketball playoffs coming right up. Love it. This has probably been done already, but predictions:

AL East - New York Yankees
AL Central - Minnesota Twins
AL West - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
AL Wildcard - Boston Red Sox

All pretty conventional picks, so sleepers: Tampa Bay Rays, they're still pretty much the same team that went to the World Series two seasons ago. Chicago White Sox, Jake Peavy could be huge for them. Seattle Mariners, if healthy, their pitching staff is really solid, Franklin Gutierrez is poised for a breakout season, and Chone Figgins is a really nice offseason pickup.

AL MVP - Joe Mauer (Minnesota Twins). I expect a back-to-back MVP for Mauer.
AL Cy Young - Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers). Will lead the AL in Ks (even though Ks are just a flashy stat in my opinion) and probably win another 19 games.
AL Rookie of the Year - Wade Davis (Tampa Bay Rays). Lots of Ks (again, flashy) and could win a dozen games or more as the Rays fifth starter. Another possibility is Carlos Santana of the Cleveland Indians, he'll start the season in the minors, but has a chance to get called up and has massive power.

NL East - Philadelphia Phillies
NL Central - St. Louis Cardinals
NL West - Colorado Rockies
NL Wildcard - Atlanta Braves

Sleepers: Cincinnati Reds, Joey Votto could be the NL MVP and their rotation could be killer. New York Mets, I don't know why, with the injuries to Reyes and Beltran, and K-Rod's lackluster season last year, but I see this team as having a chance to make the playoffs.

NL MVP - Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds). Troy Tulowitzki (Colorado Rockies) will be a contender as well.
NL Cy Young - Roy Halladay (Philadelphia Phillies). I think Halladay has a legitimate chance at 22 wins or more. He'll have great run support and he almost always goes into the late innings.
NL Rookie of the Year - Jason Heyward (Atlanta Braves). This is likely.

Another prediction - AL Comeback Player of the Year - Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle Mariners). He's won this award in the NL before in Cincinnati and I think he'll win it again this year by bringing his batting average back up to a respectable level from last year and continuing to hit HRs, which he has never stopped doing.

The Reds made an...interesting (for loss of a better word) move in naming Mike Leake, their number one draft pick last year, their fifth starter. Not to say this is a sure-fire recipe for disaster, as it has worked before (Tim Lincecome), but I do get nervous when a team puts young starters on the fast track.

The comparison of Leake to Lincecum isn't really fair. Lincecum played enough in the minors to show himself to be an elite talent. He was rushed, but the skill set on Lincecum is really hard to compare to other players. Leake literally has no professional track record. The last pitcher that I can remember skipping the minors was Darren Dreifort, who at the time was seen as having at least two plus-plus pitches, which Leake has not, and on top of that, Dreifort wasn't terribly good in his career. Personally, I don't think it's a good move, but mostly because Dusty Baker is in charge of him, and he does not have a good track record of limiting innings on young pitcher, or any pitchers for that matter.

On the other hand, should be work out, a young rotation of Edinson Volquez, John Cueto, Homer Bailey, Aroldis Chapman and Mike Leake could be scary if they are able to overcome injury and pitch to their potentials (big ifs). Notice vets Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang aren't even on that list? Strange to see a Reds team potentially deep in pitching (they also have Travis Woods, Matt Maloney, Micah Owens, and a couple of other youngsters in the mix).
Now, if that offense with Bruce, Votto and Phillips and live up to its own potential...

To be honest, I wouldn't count on having a rotation with those names until next year at the earliest. Volquez is hurt, Cueto looks like he's going to be league average, based on his GB/FB/LD percentages, and the other three have major question marks as well. I'd say at this point, the offense is the surest bet of that team.

It didn't take very long for Joe Morgan to get on my nerves.

Couldn't agree more. I really wish ESPN would just take the step to get rid of him, he is beyond useless as a commentator.

i have no plans to support ESPN's airing of any Redsox vs Yankees matchup they don't need more exposure but because they are ratings gold soon that's all ESPN will show. ESPN should just brodcast all thier games and stop pretending they care about any other teams.

Joe Morgan Super Sucks

The one and only.
Wow, the first inning pretty much confirmed how I expected this season to go. We take a three run lead right off the bat (of Marlon Byrd) and then give up six in the bottom half. Big Z gets yanked before he completes two innings and we lose by eleven. It's going to be a long fucking season and it just started. Oh well. There's always next year...

This team did absolutely nothing to improve in the off-season and it shows on the field.

I know it was against your team, but you have to admit Jason Hayward's homer was something else to watch.

He put up Hall of Fame numbers in the minors, and every scouting report I can find says the ball jumps off his bat like no one else they've seen. After seeing that live, I can definitely see why.

i'm just happy that Ben Sheets pitched well. the A's are going to struggle offensively. Roy Hallady and Placido Polanco got my Phillies of th a good start

That tends to happen when you DFA your best offensive player, and even with him have trouble eclipsing 100 HR in a season. The A's offense will probably be below average until Carter, Taylor, Cardenas, Doolittle and the gang hit Oakland.
