well i'm glad they kept Mauer. it sounds john rauch is going to the closer but the Padres admit that the Twins have scouted bell i see a trade in may or june once the Twins see where they are with the current setup

i suspect John Smoltz will pitch for a contender starting in late July so he's available for the postseason. the Twins seem to be willing to let John Rauch be the closer for now

The Giants actually decided not to rush Madison Burmgarner and chose Todd Wellmeyer to the 5th starter. I just hope the Giants aren't using up all the Early wins in march

The Giants aren't that good. They overplayed their ability by a good 15 wins last season. They'll fall back to Earth.

As a Red Sox fan, I can't say that I am very optimistic about this year.

They've done a decent job trying to shore up the starting pitching (it's always about pitchers, with the Sox) but we haven't really addressed our problems generating offense.

Big Papi is in decline and now, with Jason Bay gone, we are in serious need of a reliable power hitter.

Youk and V-Mart are nice, but we are going to need some seriously big bats if we hope to contend against the Yanks or the Phillies.

well if Mike Lowell shows he is healthy you could swap him for a bat. Besides Cameron and J.D. Drew also have power. the Redsox are just not likely to hit as many homers but they will still score oh and remember good pitching usally beats good hiting in the chill of October

I wouldn't worry too much. Both of those guys are big bats, and Ortiz is still going to be good for about 20 HR. Bringing in Cameron really boosts the value of the outfield significantly, as he's got 20+ HR power as well, and somehow, J.D. Drew is still putting up a .900+ OPS. The offense will still be there, but the pitching and defense have been improved about 10 times over.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Watched the Mets-Cardinals on ESPN today and I must say that this might be the stoutest Redbird team since LaRussa took over. Starting pitching is solid (Carpenter, Wainwright, Penny, Lohse and Garcia) and the battling order should produce tons of offense. Schumaker, Rasmus, Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, Freese, Ryan and Molina. I'll stack that up against anyone. We should win the division if Carpenter can stay healthy.

My biggest concern is the closer. Ryan Franklin scares me to death and he cratered last year in the post-season.

Gettin' stoked....ready for some warm weather, beer and baseball!!!

Im predicting a WS rematch with the Phillies coming out on top this time.

The Reds made an...interesting (for loss of a better word) move in naming Mike Leake, their number one draft pick last year, their fifth starter. Not to say this is a sure-fire recipe for disaster, as it has worked before (Tim Lincecome), but I do get nervous when a team puts young starters on the fast track.
On the other hand, should be work out, a young rotation of Edinson Volquez, John Cueto, Homer Bailey, Aroldis Chapman and Mike Leake could be scary if they are able to overcome injury and pitch to their potentials (big ifs). Notice vets Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang aren't even on that list? Strange to see a Reds team potentially deep in pitching (they also have Travis Woods, Matt Maloney, Micah Owens, and a couple of other youngsters in the mix).
Now, if that offense with Bruce, Votto and Phillips and live up to its own potential...

I wouldn't be too terribly worried about the Cardinals. They are my eternal pick for the Central, as long as they have Tony and Dave leading the way.

well the Reds staff sould be real good, but that park is a homerun hitters delight. rushing mike leake could end up badly the tell will be how he adjust after teams have a scouting report on him.

Thank goodness baseball season has started. I've been ready for it to start for weeks. To bad it's a ESPN Yanks-Sawks circle jerk to kick things off though. It didn't take very long for Joe Morgan to get on my nerves.

Go Cardinals !!!!! :nanner:

I'm nervous about the season. No offensive punch on my team, and Cliff Lee going to the 15-day disabled list. The Mariners will have to work real hard for each win.

The Pirates will win the World Series...in 20 years.

Yeah, I see the Red Sox finishing third in the division behind the Yanks and Rays.
