Church Plans Quran-Burning Event

Really? The Bible is full of messages that revolve around dying for religious beliefs. I mean, God himself demanded that people die in order for certain individuals to prove their devout faith.

Nice try. Christianity revolves around the living celebrating life not death as in Islam.

The media is eating this up because someone is planning to deface objects belonging to Islam.
If someone was planning to burn bibles this would be a non story.

Have you ever heard of a little thing called The Crusades? 200 years of senseless killing and you expect me to believe that Christianity revolves around the celebration of life? HA...funny.

And, pick up a Bible and have a look at it sometime. God, the deity that is worshipped by Christians, plagued the world with countless deaths. According to The Bible, God killed off human beings during the great flood and left only Noah and his family to survive. He wiped out the entire human race, leaving only a handful of people as survivors. God ordered Joshua to kill every man, woman and child in Canaan. God asked Abraham to kill his own son - HIS OWN SON. The Bible is fuuuuull of stories like that - stories that revolve around the punishment of death and not the celebration of life.

Ah, fuck them. Let them burn their little books. Meanwhile, invite a bunch of their little fellow book burners. Hell, have a nice little national bonfire in the sticks. Let them have their freedom of speech.
At the same time, drive in a bus load islamic fundamentalists strapped to the hilt with bombs to the bonfire site. Let them have their freedom of speech. This way, we can get rid of both the crazy fucking christian fundamentalists and the crazy fucking islam fundamentalists and let the rest of us live in a somewhat quieter and saner world.

All Old Testament. The New Testament, which is what Christians are following, counters almost everything written in the Old Testament. And before you start, I believe in a Power greater than myself or humanity. I practice my spirituality in my own way, besides what does anything you said have to do with a pastor protecting himself from some asshole who wants to take his life?

We should be asking Muslims how is it that their faith can embrace the extremists in their midst that cause such death and destruction amongst their own fellow believers - case in point:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—At least 65 people were killed after a suicide bomber attacked a Shiite rally in Pakistan's southwestern city of Quetta on Friday (SEPTEMBER 3, 2010).

Pakistani Taliban Attack Shiite Rivals

Instead we make it easier for those same nuts to rally more support against Western civilization.

First of all, that is one of the biggest flaws in Christianity - the Old Testament is the supposed original scripture - the "Word of God". But, that's not what Christians follow? They don't follow the word of their own beloved God? Rather, they follow an updated version that is openly said to have been written by men and is nothing more than their loosely translated accounts of what may or may not have happened? :surprise:

Secondly, somebody made the comment that if this pastor was a true Christian, he wouldn't own a gun. Personally, I don't believe that statement has any merit. Nowhere does it say in The Bible that pastors can't own guns.

But, if this pastor were to defend himself and, in the process, kill someone with said gun, then he would, indeed, not be a true Christian. Why? Because, Christians follow a thing called The Ten Commandments - one of which is "Thou shalt not kill" - not "Thou shalt not kill. Well, unless someone is attacking you. Then you can kill. But, only if you're positive that the other person is going to kill you for sure and not just injure you. Otherwise, you'd be killing someone and...THOU SHALT NOT KILL."

The Ten Commandments are commands - commands ordered by their God - commands which they are required to follow. If they choose to ignore those commands, then they are defying their God. And, if you defy your God, Christian or not, then you aren't a very devout religious follower - you are a fair weather believer and stay faithful to your God only when it's convenient to do so.

:2 cents:

And, I'm not the one who brought up the pastor owning a gun. I was merely adding to the comments that had already been made.

Yeah, but you didn't reply to the post about the pastor with the gun, you replied to my reply about the pastor with the gun. Irregardless I refuse to believe anyone should, under any circumstances, just stand still and let someone kill them. The notion is quite assinine really. And yes Christians do follow the new testament because its about Christ, see the connection? The whole Bible, old and new was written by men, and there is much more to it than Constantine and the Roman Cathlic Church allowed anyone to see for seventeen hundred years.

No, Christians follow the New Testament because that's what they are told to do now. Christianity has changed it's ways so many times over the years that Christians themselves don't even know about their own religion. Yet, most of them act as if they are experts on what is or isn't "Christian".

And, if the notion is asinine, then why did the Christian God make it a Commandment? Commandments are rules that are meant to be obeyed by faithful followers of God. There are no exceptions and there are no loop holes.

Thou shalt not steal.
That's an order from God not to steal. It doesn't matter if you're stealing something because you're jealous of somebody's possessions or if you're stealing food to feed your starving children - under no circumstance, according to God's rules, thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.
That's an order from God not to cheat on your spouse. It doesn't matter if they cheated on your first and you're just getting back at them by sleeping with someone else or if you were drunk and had a meaningless one night stand which you barely remember - under no circumstance, according to God's rules, thou shalt not commit adultery.

You shall have no other gods before me.
That's an order from God that you're not allowed to worship other gods. It doesn't matter if the country you live in forces you to worship a god of their choosing or if your parents raise you under religious preferences that have you worshipping another god - under no circumstances, according to God's rules, you can't worship any other god but Him.

Thou shalt not kill.
That's an order from God that you're not allowed to kill. It doesn't matter if...

Are you sensing a pattern?

Burning books is always silly and dumb and it is a step backwards in civilisation. The Inquisition burned books, the nazis burned books, now some 50 christian fundamentalists. Idiocy will never disappear.
Maybe they should (have) read the books they burn(ed), that would have increased their knowledge...

Yeah I took two classes in the Crusades. They occurred centuries ago, also the religious civil wars in Europe of the 16 and 17th are long past.

Your point is invalid.

No one makes anyone do anything if you're a Christian. You're taking the Bible literally...................you're also taking the Old Testament which was primarily a Jewish text. Most Christians use the New Testament as a guide.

My point that Christianity isn't a peaceful religion is invalid? Hmm, typical response from a believer. See what you want, deny the rest...even though history dictates and proves otherwise. Ok.

Umm, as a Christian, you are supposed to take The Bible literally. If you don't, then you don't really believe in God. The Bible, according to the roots of Christianity, is The Word of God. So, if a Christian were a true believer, they would consider the Bible as The Word of God and not just a simple "guide" that they can interpret however they want. They would believe that God's word is God's word and leave it at that. Yet, as you said, a lot of Christians use it as a "guide". Because, as I said before...
