Ideally showing mixed race couples on TV should be so unremarkable that we shouldn't even be able to list the shows they appear in because they are ubiquitous.
No. Ideally it should be so unremarkable that we
can list shows they appear in but we shouldn't feel the need to because it doesn't matter.
... I was simply answering a question "What is the reaction when and if such shows air?" I gave examples of the reaction.
Now the very fact that someone is able to give examples of interracial couples on TV is evidence to the contrary??
The better answer would have been - "so ubiquitous I can't list any"?
ok... So ubiquitous I can't list any.
When I watch US TV shows here in the UK, I'm surprised at the lack on interracial couples shown. I don't know whether this is just a reflection of US society, perhaps there are very few mixed-race couples or whether it's just a problem with showing them on TV.
...jumping to conclusions?
Are there any other possibilities that come to mind?
....Maybe you aren't watching every show? :dunno: (I know I'm not)...
Grey's Anatomy? ER? My Name Is Earl? Big Brother? Scrubs? Lost? Desperate Housewives? I Love Lucy? Daytime Soaps? Supernatural? The West Wing? etc...
It may be so ubiquitous in fact that people forget that the shows they love do in fact have interracial relationships.
The irony is, now that the public is becoming color blind and paying attention to other more universal conflicts in relationships, certain groups are disappointed. They feel these shows should "wrestle with the challenges and complexities of such unions."
Apparently the TV producers (and the U.S.) just can't win.
