I think they only Scottish comedy eveybody gets is Billy Connolly and that's about it.

Scottish comedy is only really understood in Scotland - it doesn't travel well. As for the self proclaimed 'King' of Scottish comedy - one William (Billy) Connolly - he was funny once for a few months in the mid 70's.

Yeah I was a little bit cynical when I said Billy Connolly is 1 of the only bit of Scottish comedy everyone gets. I forgot about Craig Ferguson as he made it made it in America. Yeah Frankie Boyle is another Scottish comedian that seems to be on alot of British TV also.

Yeah Bigoldowls Minder was a classic  "I could be so good for you" I'm not sure if you needed to fully understand cockney rhyming slang but I liked the show anyways and knew alot of the terms.

I drink tea also and I average about 3 or 4 cups a day which is nothing for the UK.lol

Ha ha Berti Vogts, a German legend but a Scottish embarrassment!

Re: Ask a British Person.......

Have you ever owned a Triumph or Cooper ?

Have you ever sported a mohawk ? What color ?

How often do you go out to see live music ?

Cole Slaw - green salad or chips ?

What's the deal with British addresses? I've seen a few the way they're written on mail, and it makes no sense to me. For example (from Dave Rhino's thread about the guy who chainsawed his head off):

Bishopstoke in Eastleigh, Eastley, Hants

Usually they have a street number on them, but I don't understand what Bishopstoke, Eastleigh, Eastley, or Hants are. Is Bishopstoke the city, or is Eastleigh the city? :helpme:

They do have a number on... They just didn't put it in that report because you didn't need to know his actual postal address.

Our addresses aren't any different from American addresses.

Eastleigh is the city. Hants (Hampshire) is the county.

What about Eastley? What is that?
They are different

Say I live at 125 Campbell Road, in West Hollywood, which is a suburb of Los Angeles.

Fox
125 Campbell Road
Los Angeles, CA 90212
USA

Say I live at that same address in Florence Park, which is a suburb of Oxford, England

Fox
125 Campbell Road
Florence Park
Oxford
Oxon
OX4 3NE
United Kingdom

Often the Brits leave part of that out, but sometimes they put the suburb, the city, and the county, which is like Americans putting the state.

You will never get an address like

12557 47th Ave NE #145
Minneapolis

That just wouldn't happen. Not in England. We don't number our streets instead of naming them, and we have house numbers from 1, 2, 3 and up instead of in 100s by block.

What about the Oxon and the OX4 3NE? What is that? Is it the county and the "ZIP code"?

Is Scotland's national football team considered "comedy"...?

(Berti Vogts! :1orglaugh)
.. nope .. it's more tragedy than comedy .. which reminds me of one of my favourite Mel Brooks quotes:-
"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die"

I can understand the purpose of using the county in the address almost like a state, but I don't understand why Brits should have to put the suburb AND the city. I would have thought with a smaller country, the postal system would be less complex. Anyway though, if it ain't broke don't fix it I guess.

Some people do some people don't. We have a lot of towns that have more than one of the same street. In a country where things grew up over thousands of years rather than decades, there are lots of overlaps and repeats and nothing was really planned out from the start. So you often have to be very specific, cause when a lot of these streets were named, there was no such thing as Royal Mail.

Thanks for the explanation, Fox. That really does make a lot of sense, looking at it in that context.

I'm just an ignoramus sometimes when it comes to other countries. Especially things like their layout and infrastructure.
