I've never been a fan of ice hockey, but as its the Olympics (that time every 4 years when you watch sports that you would never normally do because its the Olympics) I decided to watch USA v Russia live on the BBC. Got to say I still think ice hockey is crap.

Fuck me, was that a game and penalty shoot-out! Glad the US boys made it. Oshie Oshie Oshie!

Fixed! ;)

Incredible game. A total team effort to get to the shootout but after that it was all Oshie and Quick. Evenly matched teams; I have nothing but repect for the Russian squad.....it was a great game to watch as a pure hockey fan. Oshie's skill one-on-one is remarkable and has been all season for St. Louis.

To be honest, I cheered for Russia. And that goal was a clear one

I thought so too until they explained the international rule about the net mooring. It was clearly off the left peg when the puck went into the net so the call was the correct one under the rules. I originally thought they called it a high-stick deflection since I was unaware of the rule when it occurred. Evidently so were you.

Oh no an "e" at the end. And he's even a "Blue". I apologize to you, him and all the Blues fans. :hatsoff:

Yeah, I would have wondered if they didn't see it was in. So it must have been that net off the peg thing. And that's what they called. A little luck for the USA, but that's the rule.

Btw does that rule not exist in the NHL?

No offense taken!

Not like that rule, no. NHL rule 78.5, paragraph X states that a goal is disallowed:

When the net becomes displaced accidentally. The goal frame is considered to be displaced if either or both goal pegs are no longer in their respective holes in the ice, or the net has come completely off one or both pegs, prior to or as the puck enters the goal.

Evidently, international rules stipulate that the goal is disallowed as soon as the net is moved at all from being securely held by either peg.

Okay, good. But wait...Bri is a Blues fan, too. :uohs: ;)

Hmm...well the net was accidentally moved by Quick so it wouldn't have been a goal in the NHL either, correct?

Yes, she is! Just another reason to root for them!

It would have been a goal since the net did not come completely off the peg. That's why all NHL fans though it was a high-stick they were reviewing. It wasn't.

Uhm yeah kinda. I mean I don't watch any NHL hockey. Mostly because they don't show it here or only in pay tv. And I don't know shit about the teams. I liked the Red Wings when I played the NHL game on PC as a kid. I think it was NHL 2000.

But I'm glad Bri's (and yours) team is doing fairly well in the NHL. (I think?)

Ahh okay!

Uhm...can you explain to me what high-stick means in this context? Or who they thought did this "high-stick"? :o Isn't that the rule where the scorer (or player in general) isn't allowed to keep the stick higher than the net? :o

When Tyutin shot the puck from the point toward the net it appeared that it may have been deflected by one of the Russian forwards (not sure who it was to be honest) by a stick that might have been above the crossbar. The replay clearly showed that it wasn't, hence the confusion by NHL fans when the goal was disallowed. In the NHL, any deflection off a stick that goes into the net must have been held at or below the crossbar in order for the goal to be allowed. Otherwise, the goal is disallowed because it was deflected by a "high stick". This is not to be confused with a "high-sticking" minor penalty infraction....they are two different animals.

Jag and Bri had to be squirting quarts this morning. Congrats to you guys. I didn't buy into the stadium series but I liked the morning hockey. I had it on the radio as I was doing my routine. Could the NHL cut it's own niche by presenting games before noon?
