2010 Olympics in Vancouver thread

If I go venture into the NHL season thread...how many of the chest-thumpers in this thread and the USA/Canada hockey thread will I find who post consistently over there?

The US team put on a great show. There's nothing to be angry about. If we got hammered 7-1 than maybe I could understand the bitterness.

The US had probably our greatest showing ever at a Winter Olympics. We won gold in a lot of the OLD SCHOOL events--4man bobsled, dominated Nordic Combined, Men's figure skating. We took overall medal count and the games were in our backyard basically.

I thought the Olympics were about doing your country proud on the global stage? Do olympic athletes really cry at winning bronze?

Canada did a hell of the job pulling off the Olympics after a truly auspicious start. We should be congratulating them and not talking shit to them.

Is Canada the kind of country to talk shit about a host country--like when that host country has a bomb scare  :dunno: I think not enough Americans travel abroad and really appreciate the world around them. The USA is the land of myopia....

Yeah, be sure and tell those "other medalists" that they're failures. Winning a medal, regardless of color, is the highest honor any athlete can have. Every one absolutely aims to win the gold, but there were 172 medalists who are going home with hardware who deserve to be applauded for their efforts. Regardless if they weren't the best, they still earned the right to represent their country and stand on the podium. It doesn't get any better than that.

From Cool Runnings:
"Hey, it doesn't matter tomorrow if they come in first or fiftieth. Those guys have earned the right to walk into that stadium and wave their nation's flag. That's the single greatest honor an athlete can ever have. That's what the Olympics are all about."

Gotta say I agree with you and GregCentauro:

To each they're own, and I agree that I believe many are not stupid or even ignorant. But, many he's and she's are simply perhaps failing to see that to even be accepted by a country's Olympic Team in ANY event, and to represent them--although more then ever, let us all please note that many experidates are playing for other countries they just got citizenship to years ago, which is fine, and "we" as fans & spectators didn't participate or do anything to help them personally--you have to be a DAMN good member of your particular Sports field to even qualify. Just stop a think for a moment how many from all around the world trained for years (litterally YEARS) and tried to make it to the games every few years. Truely makes you think, no? So congrads to all the teams from around the world.

And as I said, I didn't watch the closing last two day games, but I am now watching the re-runs of the Closing Ceramonies after my work out here. It's all nice and Canadian so far. All looks cool so far! But let's stop this bickering and all just smile and enjoy it, please. :)

Im trying to decide whats more important /impressive. The most golds or the most medals.

There should be a points system, like 5 points for gold, 3 for silver, 2 for bronze.

Is somewhere outhere.
So does anyone know how Canada got two games in 22 years (with all the other countries)? :dunno:

Probably because they are more likely to get snow and no bad press
- thats the theory anyway :1orglaugh

Although why they are having Sochi next is even more bewildering. As
Georgia is not very far away, and of course that war-torn nation of
Chechnya.I'll be surprised they will have any snow with all the heat
going on.

Surely it would have been better if they had it in the Urals :dunno:

Two big, fully erect thumbs way up. I can't rep you, bitch, but I'd like to.

We will all be free once.
I had two good weeks, even though it was tough to watch the Vancouver Olympics at European time schedule and at the same time stay awake during daylight. ;)

Sad and tragic considering the mortal luge accident.
But many great and heroic achievements, and loads of competetive stuff that I fully enjoyed watching.

I was almost choking from excitement during the final hockey match! What a great way to end this Olympic event! Both teams didn't deserve to lose, but the winning goal ('old' hero Iginla passing to 'new' hero Crosby: GOAL) must have been written in the stars somehow.

And please, my dear Americans and Canadians, think FREE at FREEones and stop fighting about which country is the 'best'. The Olympics are originally meant for young people to compete TOGETHER!

Remember the great reception and cheers for Team USA during the medal ceremony .... during the replays I saw a Canadian hockey supporter applaud for that swift reaction by Parise 25 seconds before the 'final' whistle, without getting beaten up by other Maple Leafs. :D

After all, a border is nothing more but a line drawn on a map.

Let's have FUN watching and talking sports .... and girls :angels: together at FREEones!

Snow? That shit weather up there almost got Lindsey Vonn killed. I knew Vancouver was probably the warmest big city in Canada, but to have mucky weather like that - rain and fog and shit - was to say the least bad timing. At least Sochi is at the Caucasus Moutains so now I will be able to see exactly where my troglodyte ass came from.

1 gold thats terrible , the snow here in Scotland up at the ski resorts has been great for the last 4 years , they have no excuse for being so shite

Canada did a wonderful job at the closing ceremony ! I understand hockey is NOT the national sport of USA but it really attracted a lot of interests in the States about what hockey is and watched the Games Canada vs USA in the finale.

I hope it will build up hockey as a more popular game in the States not just in Minnesota, Michigan and several northern states.

Our local AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild, the Houston Aeros, typically draw 7-8 thousand people on an average night and maybe 10-12 thousand on weekends. You can get a ticket for $5. There are other AHL teams in San Antonio and Dallas. Hockey is alive and well in Texas and I would LOVE to see an NHL franchise in Houston.

You mean Minnesota, Michigan and the Northeast. Consider that: we only have a couple hot spots really, and we still kicked the shit out of the world. :D Minnesota has around 13 of the top 20 HS teams in the country. The state tournmant is about to start this week. No other state tournament in the country is bigger, IMO!

I got someone on the AHL team down there. I didn't know they were pulling that many people for an AHL team. Not bad at all for Texas. Sell ice to Eskimos? The commish must be good.
