2014 Sochi Winter Olympics thread

Besides lidstrom, which Norris winner in the past 10 years has been the best defenceman? Whichever defenceman gets the most points generally grts the Norris. Subban isnt even the best defenceman on Montreal let alone the league or team canada. Subban is a forward on the blue line. Nothing defensive about his game. He's a huge liability and takes too many stupid penalties. That's why he didn't play. Babcock knows the American forwards would burn his ass.

Canada outshot them by a considerable margin, which surprised the heck out of me. This is the first time they went to the net like they should. The front line combined better than they have, and the defense stayed solid. At this point, it's Canada's gold to lose, really.

The U.S. closed the shots on goal gap in the 3rd and it ended up being fairly close at 37-31. Canada played great team D and the Price was right in net. Hopefully we can keep it going against the Swedes, who will be missing Zetterberg up front.

Congratulations to Team Canada for their victory over the USA in hockey today. Their game plan was perfectly executed. The USA played well but Canada dictated the pace of the game and came out on top. My only consolation is the fact that it was a shot by Jay Bouwmeester of my beloved St. Louis Blues that was deflected by Benn into the net behind Jonathan Quick that scored the lone and winning goal for the Canadians. Also congrats to Team Sweden....they have been incredible in the tournament so far and should present a formidable foe for Canada on Sunday for the gold. I'll be cheering the USA team to take the bronze but it is obviously a disappointing option at this stage. Finland will be a tough opponent but hopefully our boys will be up to the challenge. I'm very proud of Backes, Oshie and Shattenkirk. They have represented the Blues and Team USA in a superlative fashion. Oshie may have carved legendary status for himself after his heroics against Russia in the prelims. We'll never forget his fantastic performance going 4 for 6 in the shootout to take out the Russians.

After that it's back to the NHL and the chase for the Cup! I'm ready for the home stretch!!

MIKAELA! :iloveyou: ]

Just saw it. American exceptionailsm! :yesyes:

She's cute (still like skier Jessie Diggins from my state better). Youngest slalom winner in history and first for America in 42 years. She can go on to who knows how many more Olympics at her age.

And I apologize for my crass post earlier about the game but I was just really pushing for this team to end our gold medal drought and feel that it really was Gold or bust for this team.

That said I feel like the Americans will not have their heart in the Bronze game. Although Quick (assuming he's going to get the call) is in beautiful form right now I just suspect the Fins will want the hardware more and will squeak out a tight 2-1 win. Overtime would be nice just to see a great bench reaction to get the Bronze.

Although both the U.S.A. and Finland players have to be disappointed about not playing in the Gold medal game, I expect both teams to play hard for the Bronze. Unlike the Russian team, these two squads have lots of character players with heart. Plus the N.H.L. is undecided about shutting down the league again in 2018. This could be the last chance for these players to earn Olympic medals.

Quick (or Miller) I think will have to win it, as I said. Entirely capable just by his performance yesterday. I just really believe this team was out for Gold and nothing less. On that other board it's a 79-79 split right now in voting for who people think wins. The Fins have a history of winning this game. I say it goes to the Fins. We'll see if the Americans show up in nine hours.

What an anticlimactic last game. I knew it was Gold or bust but to put up two zeros in the only two games that count is frankly pathetic.

Taking nothing away from the Finns but gutless is the word that comes to mind. They totally mailed it in today. The heart-stopping SO win against the Russians is totally overshadowed by the collapse in the medal round. I mean, geezus guys, how about showing a little bit of pride?? What an embarrassment.

You still owe me a beer.

Here you go, buddy. Almost as good as the USA's effort today against Finland. Enjoy!

And to think that the Closing Ceremony is just around the corner and the Winter Olympic Flame leaves Sochi behind for the next host city in Korea
I have to say I think the Russians put on a great show as hosts.

Those two weeks or so just fleeewwwwwww High points and low points. That is why we love sport so much.
Results can go by the form book one minute and the next, the form book goes out the window and there are different competitors on the podium than who was predicted.

It seems not so long ago the Summer Games of London 2012 ended.
And with Sochi 2014 about to close, that means the next Olympiad due is Rio De Janeiro in 2016.
Which does not seem so far away now.

I couldn't watch, what happened to the Americans?
It was a turd of a performance.

They got slaughtered

It's not so much the "slaughtered" part that bothered me. It was the lack of effort (as I predicted would happen yesterday).

The first period effort was one hundred percent there (Kesler blocking shots, other players blocking shots). But Kane had two - TWO - penalty shots/breakaways and he came up empty. Quick let up a stinker of a goal as far as I could tell, and after the second one (which I believe was a lucky bounce off an official) it was a wrap. So they were there and in it, but the third period is the resonating memory I'm unfortunately going to come away with from this team. It's just such an anticlimactic couple games.

While I'm disappointed with our men's hockey effort and the choke by the ladies, fortunately I have some very fond memories of other Americans there like Shiffrin, my babe Diggins, Julia Mancuso, Bode Miller, Ted Ligety. Our snowboarders and other skiers represented hard. My state represented hard even without Lindsey Vonn.
