2014 Sochi Winter Olympics thread

I love the Olympics, I love the idea of them, I love that the world kinda sorta does something together for a brief period of time. I prefer the Winter Olympics to the Summer.

I am terribly worried at how the Russians are going to do hosting. Have a look at this:

That's pretty bleak. And then there is the whole crap about gay athletes. There is potential to have things be pretty seriously fucked up. Let's hope for the best, because the Olympics are awesome.

Post your thoughts on the Olympics here. Who will be the medal leader? Will Russia take the edge with home-court advantage? Can Canada take gold in men's and women's hockey again?

I love the Olympics too! I must be one of the oddballs who actually prefers the Winter Olympics LOL!

The stance regarding people who are gay/lesbian saddens me :(

Now regarding the USA's chances ....

Just like the Summer Games, the USA led all countries in total medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics. We checked in with 37 total, which was seven more than second-place Germany.

However, we were only tied for third place in gold medals won. I'm sure they would like to improve on that number... but can they?

I dunno!?!

The complete medal standings from the last winter olympics. Canada had the home court advantage, but came away with 4 more gold medals than anyone else. Be nice if they could do that again...

I'm definitely in the minority in that I have never given two shits about the medal count. But I am a fanatic about the Olympics. Olga Korbut is my Olympic hero but Summer or Winter, I'm tuned in.

At the Lillehammer Olympics, a tourist from the Bahamas found out that (shocker) the Bahamas didn't have anyone entered in cross-country skiing. Somehow he managed to enter, borrowed some spare equipment (from the gold medal favorite if I remember correctly), and competed in the Olympics. Of course, after falling down every 25 feet he came in dead last but the obvious point to be made is....he competed in the freakin' Olympics. I'll take that and anything like it over the medal count any day.

Oh, and fuck all professional athletes who compete in their pro sport. Herschel Walker in the bobsled - no problem. But screw all dream teams and screw anyone who needs a medal when they're already laughing to the bank.

The U.S.A. should win the medal count but Russia should do much better than their 2010 results due to home-site advantage and probably increased spending on training & development. I'm hoping for good results for Canada but expecting a slight drop from 2010.

I'm still trying to figure out why basketball is in the summer Olympics when most leagues play in the winter months? If the N.H.L can take a break during the season every 4 years, why can't the N.B.A. do the same?

The winter Olympics rock. Way better than the summer games for me....not sure why. The events are more exciting. Love the skiing, sledding, skating....it's juts awesome. Serious afraid that something awful is going to happen in Sochi. Terrible choice for a location. Regardless, I'll be watching for sure!!! The downhill alone is worth the price of admission.

I am entirely with you on this - there are always cool stories like that which come out during and after the Olympics. And, though in general NBC's coverage of the games is atrocious, they do always manage to do a decent job of helping us get to know the countryside of wherever the Olympics are being held.

And the professionals playing...I'm so torn. It's such good, fun to watch hockey that I'd hate to see it go away, but it, in many ways, flies in the face of the spirit of the games to have the pros play.

Well, in a traditional sense, basketball and volleyball are traditionally summer sports, played outside. I guess that's how they decide?

:dunno:

I just read that the opening ceremonies were a flop. I look forward to seeing them.

I'm not sure if I am hoping Russia shits this up, or if the pull it out. White pulled out of an event because the course is too dangerous. There are comments about other venues being unsafe or unfinished, too. Guess we'll see!

There was only one ring which hadn't been luminated, but that was the only fail until now
