I just hope they don't throw a boatload of cash at Saban....I'd much rather get a guy who can build his own legend instead of cashing in on one that already exists.
Honestly, Saban is overrated as a coach. His real strength is recruiting, and it certainly helps when the team you're recruiting for has a deep tradition. He's cashing in on the Alabama name. I suspect the same would happen with Texas. When you have a team absolutely loaded with 5 star talent, you're gonna consistently win.
In a small way, he reminds me of Pat Day when Dye was coaching at Auburn. On his
best day as a coach, Dye was nothing more than mediocre, but as a recruiter, he was awesome. With the talent Dye pulled in, he should have dominated the 80's, but his conservative nature, coupled with poor coaching at the wrong times, amounted to records that were noting more than respectable. After Dye, Auburn ended up with a coach who was completely different. Terry Bowden was an awesome coach, but as a recruiter, he was a complete moron. Bowden breezed thru his first 2 seasons, with Dye's recruits, and after that, the team went to hell in a handbasket when he had to start using
his recruits. I gave up on Bowden when he made one of the worst coaching decisions in the history of college football. The firing of defensive coordinator Wayne Hall, which reminds me of a great story. When Terry Bowden was offered the Auburn job, the first thing he did was call his dad, Bobby, and ask him what he needed to do. The first thing out of Bobby Bowden's mouth was straight to the point,
Keep Wayne Hall.
As for Texas, right now their mindset is most likely geared towards trying to get someone who can very quickly get them back to being a serious competitor. Saban could do that, but Texas needs to keep an eye on the future. Even if Saban took the Texas job, I don't see him staying as long as they'd want. I doubt he'd stay longer thahan 5 or 6 years before deciding that he has enough money and it was time to retire.
