2011 Tennis Thread (Grand Slams, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup)

Talent. Such a subjective word. Lets see:

1. A marked innate ability, as for artistic accomplishment.
2. a. Natural endowment or ability of a superior quality.

the key words here are: innate and natural. That is: a player that can do "superior quality" things looking like he needed no training.

well, from that definition, Roger is the most talented player of the world. His game is so smooth, so effort-less, he seems to float sometimes.

after him, it would be maybe Berdych, Verdasco, Monfils, Tsonga... :2 cents:

and for explosive, i think that's clear: Raonic! :)

I agree about Berdych; I saw him crush Federer at the Olympics back in like the '04 games, if my mind serves me. Okay, not crush, but I had never - until that point - seen anyone defeat Federer like that. Then again, I think pretty much anyone who makes it to the ATP Tour is talented. Some just rise much higher and rack up so many more majors and victories. :2 cents:

Robredo withdrew, aw.

YES! :nanner:

wait, NO!

i mean, good for Delpo, and bad for Tommy. No one deserves to be injured, of course.

but anyway, Delpo is reaching F's and SF's of tournaments, just like his old 2009 self.

this is GREAT news not only for us all latin-americans, but for the entire tour.

and i wouldn't say that the potential matchup against Rafa is heavily one-sided... i mean, Rafa hasn't showed much, and Delpo is playing better and better and better. Besides, Delpo has won their last 3 matches.

VAMOS DELPO!!! ;)

Intense match, phew - Dr. Ivo was in the house, serving from the moon
The monster server against the talented ground player makes for dramatic crowd atmosphere. Like the Isner-Haase match I saw in Auckland, the crowd was pumped
Nadal wins though 5-7 6-1 7-6. If he had bageled Karlovic in the second set I think it would be only the third in his career.

Good way to end the day after a retirement and withdrawal earlier on.

i must confess that i wanted Karlovic to win this one.

i know the arguments: Ivo only has 1 shot, Rafa has many. FUCK IT. If you don't like it, change the rules of the game. This is how it is. Deal with it.

but that's not the reason i wanted Ivo to win.

the reason? because I don't like a crowd so biased against one player. It was like: every mistake of Ivo was strongly celebrated, as well as every shot from Rafa.

i mean, it's disrecpetful as fuck. :nono:

i know, i know, everybody has right to cheer for their favorites, BUT, you gotta behavie in tennis courts. This is no soccer, where you can yell the referee that you're gonna kill his mother after raping his daughter and the referee hears it and it's ok. This is tennis: you gotta be quiet, don't move, be on time, and RESPECT.

Ivo deserves respect. And Larry Ellison doesn't understand that (the host of the event, rooting for one player publicly? un-fuckin'-believable :wtf:)

i would have LOVED to see and hear the crowd's reaction/face in a Karlovic win... actually, i see the entire third set at 1:00 am only hoping that...

I'm a Rafa fan but I've got to agree Ivo deserves respect. I'm just curious to know was Larry Ellison asked for his opinion or did he simply want us to know who he was supporting?

Vamos Rafa.

I would have to rewatch the match, didn't notice so much differential cheering to the extent of disrespect at the time.
Ivo played well off the ground of the ground in this match, hit some nice forehand lasers and volleys.
Larry Ellison might be thinking about the money. Nadal is a lot more bankable than Ivo at this point. Honestly, whats a better matchup - Karlovic/Delpo or Nadal/Delpo? Still not good.
Maybe he should stay away from the court if he cant act diplomatically.
Nadal was always going to get more cheers since he is number one and Karlovic hasn't been in the top 50 since midway through last year. There would be more of a reaction if Karlovic lost a point on serve since most of the time the other guy doesnt even get the ball back in play.

that's absolutely no reason to be disrespectful. Like i said: tennis public are no brainless noisy barbarians. They know about the game.

Anyway...

remember uncle toni in Roland Garros ? what he said about french crowd towards Rafa ?

Rafael Nadal's uncle calls French crowd 'stupid' after shock defeat

Ivo never got boo'ed though from what I heard. The French Open crowd is notoriously rude - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqLr00Krd0k
I dont know if IW is a 'bad crowd' but they have their own history - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boycott_of_BNP_Paribas_Open_by_Venus_and_Serena_Williams

Novak still unbeatable :hammer: When will he lose? Maybe next match. Unless Stan wins next which doesn't seem likely.
Rog is still unbeatable against anyone not named Djokovic this year.
It says he lost to Chela at this tournament on his ATP playing activity page though, I guess they will fix it soon.

yeah, BUT he lost his serve today twice: 0-2 in the first set, 0-3 in the second...

leaks in the armour, i'd say.

but of course, he will be the strong favorite against Roger/Stan, no doubt about that.

with a little bit of luck, and keeping the evil twin back in the hotel, roger has a decent chance.

The look on Rafa's face is priceless. :1orglaugh
The top sportsmen really can't stand loosing.

I can't FUCKIN believe it. I really can't. Roger THROW AWAY his match against Djokovic

there's no other way to put it: he was 1-2, break down in the third, then broke back to love playing amazing. Then he was 40-15 in the next game, playing the best tennis of the afternoon. And then, for some fucked up reason, he lose the next 10 points. But is not like Nole won them: ROGER FUCK THEM UP BIG TIME.

what the fuck is wrong with him?

is it his age ?

is it his wife/kids priorities ?

is it his lack of training ?

is it his lack of focus ?

he really has a lot to think these days before Miami...

WTA need more Schiavones.

King Nole needs one more win to stay unbeatable.

I won't be watching either live, waa.

if he really would've been working in a office, he would've been FIRED, after his horrendous 2nd-half-of-the-3rd-set in his singles match. :anonymous

i don't like when he said in the post-match interview "i'm happy with my game".

i mean, you gotta be positive and all, but HAPPY ? C'MON...

this means that Roger now settles with take a set and "fight" against Rafa and Nole, and is "happy" with being the no. 3 in the world ?

he really, really, REALLY needs a Win or a Final in Miami...
MAYBE if he drops in the Rafa's half, 'cause if he falls in Nole's... end of the story in SFs again.

There comes a time in every sportsman's life when they just can't play at the same level they used to. It could simply be that Roger can't compete mentally and physically with these super hungry and highly talented young guys like he could during his peck years. :dunno:

He can't stay at the top forever. :2 cents:

Vamos Rafa. :D

I foresee Roger to win a FEW more majors at least before he calls it quits. Pete is the GOD of tennis (probably hurts to remind lechepicha and Lungzyn) but Federer is the real God of tennis. I believe even Pete said this.

Dman shame the pro sports tennis athlete career lasts as long. :nono:

and now Nole said (today in the trophy ceremony) to Rafa: "to me, you're the greatest player ever".

didn't nole said the same thing about Roger not long ago ? :dunno:

anyway, the GOAT debate is something that probably will never be resolved, so...

Nole beat Rafa in the Indian Wells final, by the way, in three sets, 6-2 in the decider.

It's his 21th career title, 3rd of the year, 3rd in the last 2 months, 4th in the last 5 months.

There's ABSOLUTELY no doubt that he is the best player of the world in the last 4 months (since December 2010, Davis Cup final). Good for him. He's showing that he can be as dominant as Roger and Rafa.

EVERY tennis player in the world should be worried by now: Nole is playing AMAZING. No matter if your last name is Federer, Nadal... he's gonna beat your ass.

The new rankings are out:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx?d=21.03.2011&c=&r=1#

- Nole is #2 again, and that's the least he deserves right now.
- Roger is now #3 again, but he's safe for now: he's 2.545 ahead of the #4
- Wawrinka is #13, his best ranking in two and a half years
- Gasquet is #18, his best ranking in two and a half years
- Raonic continues improving his career-best ranking: #34 now
- Delpo continues his huge come back and he's now #51 (he has climbed 434 positions in 50 days)
