He thinks they were paying players, regardless whether the tapes were legit or not. And it was through Wayne Hall, the DC at the time under Dye. And I agree, Lowder was a huge part of the equation, but he had his "helpers," many of which still have their claws in the program. The folks like my pops that truly love the university want them rooted out, and after getting that crystal ball in January, this might be the only way...
Back then, regardless of what was done, or who paid who, I don't believe Wayne Hall had anything to do with it. At the time, Wayne Hall was considered the best DC in the country, and only Mickey Andrews at Florida State was considered his possible equal. The man had too much to lose by getting caught up in a mess like that. As for why Wayne Hall's name got mentioned, you can blame that scumbag Terry Bowden. When Bowden was hired at Auburn, the first thing he did was call his daddy at FSU and ask him what he should do. Papa Bowden told him, "Whatever you do,
DON'T fire Wayne Hall!" The whole problem was this, Terry Bowden was a great coach
(look what he did early at AU with Dye's recruits
), but Terry showed himself to be one of the worst recruiters in college football. When the team started losing games, it was because the offense
(his area
) couldn't score. When people started the talk about him on the hot-seat, his reaction to fix the offense was to fire the head of the
defense. How the hell does that make sense. The day he fired Wayne Hall, I prayed he would fall on his face and get the axe himself. He did! As for those past violations, Wayne Hall's name only came into it because Bowden was disgruntled and wanted to blame someone else for his problems. He knew that he was gonna be fired and took the cowards way out by quitting in the middle of the season. I'm sure Lowder was the instigator in all that crap, but I believe he had someone other than Wayne Hall doing his dirty work.
