In other news, and maybe head coaching is important for college football or maybe it isn't. My thinking on matters of college football has been irrevocably shattered recently. But, on a subject that I think is important, but others might think it's not important.

USC probably will not be hiring Mike Riley to replace Pete Carroll.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4814999 (of course this is from ESPN and who knows if we can trust them to get stories PERFECT the first time).

I really know nothing about USC, nothing about anything I suppose. I just sit, watch, chew and fart pretty much. BUT...based on my feeble opinion, I think this is great news for USC. I think this will allow them to go find a much better coach.

How about Jim Harbaugh? He's my #1. Why is he my #1? Because football's a team game, of course.

If sanctions do come against USC their one national title over the past few years might be taken away also, which would leave them will almost nothing. Their success over the last decade will be greatly diminished to say the least as would there run as one of college footballs best programs in history. Would that mean they would have to go all the way back to the Carson Palmer years for any time they had legitimate success?

As far as the rules violations, on one hand I think most of the rules regarding student athletes are stupid, nonsensical, impractical, removed from reality, more for each individual institution’s profit than the integrity of "armature competition", and probably should be gotten rid of. (If it was up to me places of higher learning wouldn't be involved in sports as a de facto business like they are now at all.) Not only that, but I'm sure there are a lot of places that violate them. On the other hand the rules are the rules and as long as the NCAA feels the need to keep them, as much of a farce as they are, they need to be followed and enforced just to keep it fair to the schools that actually don't violate them and keep people from getting an unfair advantage.

Chef. I never said that Colt McCoy should've led Texas to 4 NCs. I just kinda give the benefit to a Senior starter over a Freshman mop up player in the biggest game of the year. I guess you don't. You should know that I am a USC HOMER and care about USC Football over Texas and all other programs. I won't lose any sleep if Texas never wins another game again.

Obviously Colt McCoy would have his advantages over a Freshman back-up. Colt McCoy has been a staple for the Texas Longhorns for the past 4 years, which has given him a lot of confidence and comfort with being on the field. Colt McCoy has played in big games before, so he's a little more at ease with the pressure that comes along with the spotlight. With a back-up quarterback, especially a Freshman who hasn't played in a game yet, a lot of extra pressure is going to be weighing on their shoulders. It was perfectly clear just how much pressure was being felt during the first bit of the game. I made a joke about it earlier, but he honestly looked like he was always about to cry. But, after he played a bit and let everything kind of sink in, he settled down and played really, really well. And, the point I was making before is that he played just as well as, if not better than, Colt McCoy would've played. So, to think that Colt McCoy's absence meant that the Longhorns had a zero percent chance of winning is just silly, IMO.

I can't be bothered to go through your bullshit and argue for common knowledge positions. I guess I have clowned you in many a thread on many a topic in the FreeOnes universe and you've chosen THIS POSITION to make your stand :dunno:

HAHAHA, name one of those times.

How you would compare The Steel Curtain to the 2009-2010 Longhorn Defense would be fun reading for some people. Am I supposed to actually agree that football is a team sport!? Seriously? Okay Chef. Ya got me on that one genius. You pulled apart my entire way of thinking with that one! Yes, football is a team sport! You won! I quit! No mas!

I wasn't comparing the Steel Curtain to the Texas Longhorns defense. YOU were the one who was claiming that the Pittsburgh Steelers defense was why they were so good when they went to Super Bowl X, as if their offense wasn't a major player in their success. An offense, I might add, that consisted of Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Franco Harris and John Stallworth. But, I guess 4 offensive Hall Of Famers had no bearing on their success that year. No, not at all.

I simply showed you that the Texas Longhorns had a good defense too. It's not like their success was solely put on the shoulders of Colt McCoy. Their defense was one of the best in the country, which obviously helped them be the team that they were.

I have clearly admitted (if that's the right word for it) that Colt McCoy was a big part of the Texas Longhorns' success, but it seems as if you are still refusing to acknowledge that he isn't the only reason that they were a good football team. USC fan or not, it's not difficult to see that a football team can't win games with just one player. Football is a team sport and Colt McCoy needed a good team around him in order to be the quarterback that he was. It's really not that hard to see.

Good, we agree.

The other Texas teammates might also feel more at ease with their chances of beating Bama with CM as QB. It seems we agree with this part too.

I agree that there may have been a brown stain in GG's pants when he came into the game. But we're finally back to the point of contention. No, Colt would've played better. And you haven't addressed the fact (as stated by Nick Saban) that Bama acted like they won the game at halftime and gave up in the 3rd Qtr. Texas had no chance to beat Bama with their backup QB. Texas's chances to win the game ended when CM left with the injury. Colt is a dangerous runner which GG is not (not at this point in his career). The dual threat nature of Colt's game was what Texas needed.

The game is long in the rearview mirror. Time to move on.

Hear, hear! Thank you. I'm likely the biggest Texas fan on this board but it is indeed time to move on.

Giddy'up!

Looks like Pete Carroll is trying to dodge a bullet. I'm not sure he'll be able to - the inquiry is complete, and even though he isn't working there any more, he'll have questions to answer...

How much will change for the preseason rankings?

Great rankings I was thinking Ole Miss would be higher but oh well they had pretty good things to say about all the teams I read about

I agree. We were just wasting our time with that conversation. So, let's move onto something more productive like discussing the different types of grass that football fields are covered with and how it effects the teams that play on them.

Ahh, gotta love the internet.

USC continues to make mistake after mistake with trying to replace Pete Carroll. I believe it's now 3 (or 4) cough cough unofficial (of course) coaching prospects who've said NO to USC.

Yes, there are pending NCAA sanctions (Thanks Pete! Thanks Mike Garrett!) but there is no death penalty coming and I'd be shocked if it was anything more than give back the Wins from 2005, no bowl game in 2010, reduction of 4 scholies....probabation for 3 years.

So, I don't believe it's the sanctions that are frightening coaches away. I really don't. I think Mike Riley was a weak choice to begin with. Jeff Fisher and Jack Del Rio have multimillion dollar NFL contracts. They ain't giving up NFL money for college money.

I say...
1. Jim Harbaugh (pay him Big $$$ and take the heat from Stanford and the Pac10)
2. Norm Chow (he would need to bring in a Big Time DC) and give :thefinger to ucla...

These are our options....
