How'd that work out when Miami (FL) was in the Big East?

Good cause I was young and in Jr. High when I started to watch college football and that was the late 80's early 90's. So it was all about The U. Followed both, but cheered for The U when the played each other.

People are already saying Jake Locker's decision is.... ALL-TIME DUMB!

The only thing he can improve on is his mechanics and accuracy, which is something you can do in the uhhh.... I don't know.... NFL! What are going to learn from playing against the Pac-10?

Think about it. There might be a rookie salary cap next year. Meaning, he might only get a contract worth only 10-15 million at best, even if he's the #1 pick.

Also, teams are going to feel less invested in their high draft picks. You're not going to get the Jemarcus Russel treatment when you're not looking like the guy. They'll just draft the next best talent.

Oh, and then there's that potential injury thing.... but I don't know anything about that.

Take the money Jake!!!

I think Locker staying in Washington will only enhance his NFL future in the long run. He's learning a lot under Sarkisian and the pro style offense Washington runs and another year will help his accuracy, learn to read defenses and manipulate safeties and coverages. He goes from a borderline top 10 pick to a potential #1 overall pick. It will also give him a year to produce at the level that would merit a high 1st round pick and maybe Heisman consideration and a chance to win the Pac-10.

Another year with Steve Sarkisian, another year with USC maybe stuck in mediocreville...so he'll take less upfront in 2 years (if the rookie cap gets put in place), proves to be as good as advertised and makes a KILLING once the rookie contract expires?

The great players always get paid in the end. Tom Brady made, what, 600k in his first couple seasons?

The upside of having a great year and completely dominating a very weak 2011 QB draft ain't all that dumb. This was supposed to be the INSANE year to be a QB in the draft anyway---Tebow, McCoy, Bradford, Jimmy etc...

Why can't you learn to play pro style in the.... PROS!?!?

People are already projecting him to be the #1 pick. If he is selected #1, they well invest in him for a while if he struggles. Probably 3 years like most #1 pick QBs.

He will get a "KILLING" this year if he declares. I believe Matt Stafford is already one of the highest paid NFL players.

I just don't understand how he improves more in the Pac-10 and not in the NFL.

Trust me, he will get time to prove he's a great player if he declares early.

Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder, Jevon Snead, Jacory Harris.... I don't know about that.

Remeber, all QB's have question-marks heading into the draft. You don't think Tebow, McCoy, Bradford, Jimmy have stuff to improve on?

He has to be the difference-maker in the National Title game against probably the best defense in all of College Football. Texas has just as many future NFL studs on Defense as Florida has. Florida's Defensive Coordinator, Charlie Strong, had a head coaching job on his mind instead of Satan and the Crimson Tide:eek::mad: That Texas D won't be as distracted as that Florida D obviously was...

smoknn, are you aware that most Heisman winners blow it in their bowl games? They play like shit. History suggests that Ingram, because of winning the Heisman, will automatically be a Jake in the big game:dunno::tongue::thefinger

I see a low, low scoring National Champ game. Maybe not 10-6, but 14-13 is probably right...

are you aware that none of the past winners are from alabama? mark ingram is from alabama, your right history suggest the trophy winner folds up..but usually when he folds up, julio burns asses with the pass :wave2:

Julio faces another stud CB. Julio against Florida, only had 2 catches. McElwain better work his magic again.

LOL, and how did the slot WR Maze do against UF? And the TE Peek?

Isn't the whole point of a balanced offense to have multiple weapons? You take away WR #1, and that opens things up for WR #2, #3 and the TE/RBs.

And no offense smoknn, but you're semi-lucid posts aren't really helping me make my arguments in this thread bud. ;)

I'm not saying Julio is their only playmaker. Smoknn seems to think Julio is some unstoppable force, which is not the case.

Also, lets face it.... McElwain really worked his magic against Florida. Bama did things we never seen before. Did anyone expect Greg McElroy to light it up against Florida? Should we really overreact over just one game?

Now, I still think Alabama is going to win. I just think Texas is going to be more prepared than Florida was.

^
I did not think the Alabama QB would be able to play as great as he did against Florida. I thought the Bama QB was a greenhorn who hadn't really done shit this season, to be honest.

It's too bad we have to wait until freaking 2010 for the game because McElroy might become rusty during this gigantic layoff....

Here's a very sobering read about college football and the promise of the NFL. It's a pretty long read talking about big time football universities misleading college athletes. USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Bama and Miami are cited specifically. I'll copy/paste the text about SC so that I'm not piling on against anyone else's team...but this is one essential theme running throughout the essay...
Brooks and Willis looked at USC between 2002 and 2004 -- a period of very strong teams, including the 2004 squad, which won the BCS championship. In those three seasons, USC produced 12 players who were in the NFL five years or more, 15 players who were in the NFL for two to four years, and 13 who had single-season stints. Approximately 120 individuals had football scholarships at USC during that period; again, about two-thirds never played an NFL down.

There's an anecdote about Nick Saban's pregame speech this year to Bama before they played Chattanooga which rings a bit hollow given the context of this essay. There's also the mention of a rumor that Notre Dame is going to let Brian Kelly "accept in" a few more highly touted prospects in order to ensure winning:translation--the "standards" that separate ND from the rest might be sacrificed.

It's a good, long and timely read, fwiw....

Did you watch ESPN's Outside the Lines FSU academic problems? A must watch. :hatsoff:

Part 1

Part 2

Wow....shocking and sad that things have disintegrated so much. Perhaps it is time to sever the link between athletics and academics. Again, there's too much money now to bother trying to keep up the charade/facade....
