I've accepted that, but I'm looking out for the new members who might not be as comfortable with their status on the board.

The sooner they come to realise that they are strictly beholden to those of us who were he during the Golden era, the better.

The plebeians shall not have their gruel until they are deemed worthy by the council of elders.

That is all.

Also, let's not forget that people like Nightfly who was the biggest whiny crybaby the board has made run out two ocsms, totally unforgivable and also had a holier than thou attitude that too was a part of the good old days of the board.
Yeah, speaking up when OSCSM´s start talking about how she likes to have sex with ******** is a real "crybaby" attitude. Jesus fucking christ.

Yes, because the board was friendlier a few years ago. It is not easy for newer members to establish themselves in FreeOnes Talk more recently, as certain existing members are at best intolerant of them and at worst downright mean.

The board being better before? Possibly, but that was because of the great members that were still around.

Ditto... I miss some of the posters, and it seems like more trolling these days, but it's still fun. Eh.

I think that the board goes in cycles. There are a weeks here and there when it feels like some of the old days style fun is around again. A few possible contributing factors to the feeling of lethargy about the board:

1. the talk section has become dominated by a couple of personalities that post incessantly about the same things. There is a real lack of creativity, and there is no discussion happening. The loud, predictable members are just reposting their talking points regardless of the actual discussion someone is trying to ******.
2. Membership is way, way up. The longer term members are going to feel...diluted. Noobs change the feel of a board. That is, in no way, intended to be a criticism. It's just a fact. Add a few thousand n00bs, and the feel of the place will change.
3. HillHopper needs to come back.

I dunno. I still enjoy the board. If I didn't, I wouldn't be here, I guess. If you **** the place, blame the mods. Specifically DOA. Not that he has done anything wrong, it's just fun to infuriate him.

^^This (except for don't blame the mods! Duhhh :p )

I really agree that it goes in cycles, sometimes I'll be on freeones for hours upon hours other times its like GSB said, I log on, do some moderating and log off..

I love that freeones is gaining popularity.. I'm a super freeones advocate, I'm always telling people that I think would enjoy it about the site..

Members are going to come and go but that's to be seen with ANY forum..
Personally I think a lot of the members that are still here are some of the best "old timers" and a lot of their posts have me laughing constantly.. I do miss hillhopper though :(

what the fuck you lookin at?
I was reading a reply in another thread which made me wonder about the good old forum days at FreeOnes.

I don't plan to leave. Just not post much. Not because of the new board design but because I never got my fuckin smilie. And quite frankly this place isn't nearly as much fun as it was a few years ago

Do you old timers all think all was better a few years ago on this board?

If yes, what do you think would be the reason for this?

Thanks a bunch!!!

I'm honored you people actually noticed my post! And quoted it without actually quoting me.

The members back then were much more... um... interesting? Thought-provoking? Entertaining? Something else? I'm not sure which of those it was, but the board was much more interesting when I first joined. Regulars like sputnikgirl, becks, senob, Lone Gunman, slowhand, chef, violator, torre, dr. death, Dave Rhino, mini d, tunsty, Dr. Motorcity, Lady Love, hell, even DVC, fox, and BigBadBrody made this an interesting and fun place to frequent. Back then there were always at least a handful of interesting threads on the first and second pages of Talk that were worth posting something in. Back then we didn't regularly get bombarded with pointless threads by a single member who was just adding to his post count without really contributing to the board. There was always a good balance of serious threads and nonsensical threads that kept the board fun for everyone.

These days there are usually only one or two threads at a time that pique my interest enough to make worthwhile contributions. Half the time the Talk section is littered with post count spam threads like "I'm gonna send a friend request to an OCSM. I hope she accepts me," and about 15 more such bullshit threads by the same person on the first page alone. It's a drain to open Talk and find **** like that on a regular basis. There is more bitching and fighting between members now than there used to be, and that often takes the fun out of being here. I often find myself logging in just because there's **** that needs moderating, but not because I wanna stick around bullshitting like I used to. There are days when even doing that seems like a chore.

I think that about sums it up.

This

Beside the board being slow and cumbersome now and my avatar dying a slow death - had to get that out of the way.

What GSB stated is spot on.
Back in the D, I used to think about logging in after work just to see what was going on.
I haven't felt that in a few years now.
The little infighting, the funny stuff being written, the personalities of the members was very
diverse. It also seemed that we cared about each other back then. I know that seems weird on the Net, but that's how it felt. There was a sense that what we contributed was taken to heart.
The good old Freeone's days.

and this

It definitely was a whole lot more fun back then. Although to think of why, I can't really come up with anything conclusive. A lot of the larger characters who kept much of the conversation feeling fresh and alive have fallen or ventured forth into pastures new which could be a reason I suppose.

EDIT: GSB pretty much summed it up.

And yet, I'm still here. That's depressing.

I think I'm going to go run a hot bath and open up my wrists with a straight razor whilst listening to Bjork.

also this.
Why cut yourself? Use a *** genius, much quicker and less likely to fail!

I doubt I fit into that category. I'm more like the dog **** you step in and wipe off in the grass. No matter how much you wipe, I'm still there :thefinger

The mods are far less stuck up now than they were in the past! Maybe its because they just know they can't get rid of me! :D

Yes but I was referring to the "great members" comment.

That sounds like a challenge to me.

Do your thing, mods. :D

Eh, they missed a good chance when I basically told em all off! Must not have been paying attention in said post...

I'm not sure how true this is, but it seems FreeOnes has kind of exploded popularity wise the past 2 years. With all these contests, a bunch of new people are joining and as a result, we're getting a watered down board. Also, the good ole days some of these members are talking about were the bad new days to someone. It's a cycle. November 2011 will be the good ole days to someone in a couple years.

Does anybody else find it insulting when people talk about how **** the board is, and how there is no good members left??
