I don't know anything about gardening, growing veggies or plants but I find this thread educational.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

hey! u know i live close by!

you can totally do plenty of stuff that actually does ok in the heat. for instance, we have a really long tomato season. they love the sun. and corn if you are early enough.

squashes do well and if you like radishes, they are amazing here. i have no idea why but they are like beasts.

watermelon will overrun you if like those, they love the heat and grow fast.

btw, between your houses, on the sides, you can do a proper little garden as well. the shade will help. we had some amazing herbs and eggplant on the side.

I did tomato plants last year. I also did watermelon three of four years ago and they do overrun everything else. They were good though, so might be worth it. I want to try cucumber and carrots.

I was gonna say, squally's probably got your back. ;)

As for me, I've had to bring my little seedlings in for the past week... tonight too. Freeze warnings. :( Freaky! Lots of people around here plant their gardens on Good Friday. Glad I didn't.

Oh no. Thankfully we only get freeze warnings here maybe two or three times a year. I have to run out and put plastic on my plants on those days.

I'm heartbroken.

The people that came to cut our grass last weekend, well, I just found out today that they ran over my blueberry bush.
Hubby promises he'll get me more, but... I took care of that tiny little thing and it was growing great. How could they not see it?!

*sigh*

On the other hand, my zucchini and yellow squash are doing alright. I have 2 tomato plants and 1 hot pepper plant growing.
All I have to do is get rid of the huge oregano plant from two years ago and I'll have a place to plant my new ones.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

My daughter loves to garden with my parents, I, on the other hand get bored with it. Its not like animals where you can take care of them and they love you back, once you plant some flowers or veggies all of the fun is gone. You water them and that's it, I guess I am just easily bored and prefer the things I take care of to interact with me.

For me, I can take or leave the flowers. My hubby likes color. However, I'm all about the veggies. It's not so much the growing part I like, it's the cooking them up part. Nothing tastes as good as veggies and herbs straight from the garden.

Yea but I learned at an early age that people frown upon those that eat their pets.

No one frowns at all if I strangle the life out of a turnip, skin it, boil it with a pinch of salt, and then eat it in front of the neighbor brats...........

but try that just once with your sister's new kitten and people freak the fuck out.

I've got Cayenne's, tomatoes, onions, and strawberries coming on already and my Mermaid roses have hundreds of blooms popping open. Good year so far.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

I have no garden :crying:

Any herbs or veggies that would grow well on a balcony?

Look up balcony gardens...you can actually do tomatoes and some other veg fairly easy with limited space.

Re: 2012 Official Gardening Thread

Check this out, have no space for herbs or salad? Try gutters! Affix them to a fence, slope them for drainage, and you're in business. I know someone who did this on the inside of the railing of their high-rise apartment building. No one could see, no one cared, and he had fresh herbs all summer long.
