The Best/Smartest Show on Television - HBO's "The Wire"

They have only showed the first three episodes on UK TV, and already im hooked Im loving the Newspaper/media angle this year, and I cant wait for the rest of the season to pan out.

ive heard nothing but good reviews of The Wire and im thinking about starting to watch it.

do you need to watch it from the very begining? i cant really afford to go out and buy all the boxsets, wondered if i could skip ahead to the best series?

Yes watch it from season 1 onwards, if you start from season 5 you are not going to get the depth of character that has been built up over the first four years, and every story is connected from S1 - S5 so starting from season 1 your beginning a story that doesnt finish until the season 5 finale. Like a novel.

I have a hard time picking between THE WIRE and THE SOPRANO'S as the best gangster / mafia type series ever made!! I would prolly go with THE WIRE cuz I have lived that life and done and been through most of the drama and situations that take place in the wire!!

the soprano's was a great series don't get me wrong, but it was more about the ITALIAN MAFIA more so than american inner city gangsterism / violence we know all to well as the wire is indicative of our american inner city street culture! :bowdown:

To fully understand the riveting effect and the full drama of the life of the series I would suggest watching from season 1 episode 1 as BB suggested. otherwise the introduction and history of some of the characters and personalities makes no sense!!

I can't argue with that statement!! I am totally addicted to the show!! I have only seen seasons 1 - 3 in its unedited glory, I have seen season 4 but the edited for television version!!

I have to watch seasons 4 and 5 too finish the epic series known as the wire!! I tell you since I have watched that show seasons 1-3, I am now a changed man having watched that awesome series!! :hatsoff:

4 only came out last year, so its going to take a while for it to come down, although I got it for only £17.99, and season 5 comes out tomorrow and I'll probably pay £30 for it, I dont mind.

Remeber thats only chapter 2 of a 5 chapter book, everything is important....

IMO seasons 1 - 2 are good, 1 I thought was better than 2, but season 3 really got me ADDICTED to this brilliant series, unfortunately I had to watch the edited version of season 4 and I have yet too watch season 5 and being as addicted to THE WIRE as I am, I think I may die soon if I can't watch seasons 4 - 5 unedited! BTW, let us know how you like seasons 3, 4, and 5!

If you wait about 2 weeks here and go to Play.com the price usually goes down significantly. I'll probably do that. Unless I feel the urge to waste £30 then what better to buy :dunno:

The Wire is fucking brilliant! It's even better than The Sopranos. It's not on Dutch tv, but thank God for Dvd's! The best shows are not shown on Dutch tv. Thats is reserved for idiot tv (we invented Big Brother, go figure).

The last episode was on last night and it was a fantastic end to a magnificnt series.

The only trouble there is now is that I have to find another show to watch and all this, Lost, Heroes, CSI bullshit just doesnt do it for me.

The Wire was a really great show with a great ensemble cast. Sometimes the characters did not have proper Baltimore accents(I have a friend from B-more, and a few of the characters-Carver-had the correct accent. The last season was a bit of letdown as they had to wind down the series. I wish both the Sopranos and The Wire had both just ended without fanfare, or had been announced the week before the last episode.
