The Best/Smartest Show on Television - HBO's "The Wire"

The one and only episode that I saw of this show was boring as shit and has completely turned me off to it.Not trying to rag on anyone here but I just didn't care for it.

My top non sit-com show on all of tv are

The Shield (best show I've ever watched, bar none)
Prison Break (starting to wear thin but still pretty good)
Dexter (what can I say,a cop that's also a serial killer.Fuckin' awesome!)
Weeds (some of the funniest shit I've seen since Seinfeld but on a different level)
Breaking Bad (a true sleeper show that's not getting as much props as it deserves.Maybe AMC should be pumping this show up more than Mad Men)

Let me guess. The one episode you watched was from season 5?

I tried to get all my friends to watch the show but the only available ones on TV were from season 5 and they all thought it was kind of boring because they don't know what's going on.

Pick any episode from season 3/4 and guarenteed you will be interested in it.

You have to watch the whole season, the show doesnt play like a regular TV show, the story isnt resolved in one hour, its more like a novel, like a novel you have to read the whole thing to get the whole story. You have to watch all 12/13 episodes to get the story.

Hope the show will be in The Netherlands someday.

HBO? Isn't that the same company who made "Band of Brothers"?

It's not so much a company as it is a tv network, specifically a premium cable network. It's been around for over 30 years, and have been known for their original programming for nearly 20 years, starting with The Larry Sanders Show, which starred Gary Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn.

I don't think that it was from season 5.I saw it in December '04,don't think that they were even on the 5th season then.I swear, there wasn't a fucking thing happening in that episode,it was so boring.I'm sure that not all of the episodes are like that, but that one just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Regardless, you have to know what's goin on to appreciate each episode. There are only a few I found boring, but those were only in season 5 with the people from the newspaper.

Watch the very first episode and go from there. You won't be disappointed.

No thanks.I can handle only so many of these types of shows anyway, plus,a friend of mine who has watched the first 4 seasons said that most of the first season is kinda slow, but he did say that it got a lot better.Regardless of that,I think that I'll take a pass on it.I guess I really am not into HBO shows.Didn't like the Sopranos,Rome,Deadwood,or Curb Your Enthusiasm, don't really see why this show would be the exception to the rule.

And you are exactly right about having to know what's going on,on the show, but isn't that the case with every serialized drama.Just like 24,if you miss one episode then it's easy to get lost, and that's why I gave up on that show too.

I guess what it ultimately come down to is that I can only watch so much depravity on tv or dvd before it just becomes too much, and right now my cup almost runith over.

By the way, have you ever watched the Shield?Because it gets my vote for the best/smartest show on television.

I hate to admit I've never seen even a minute of it.

I've heard so many raves, from such a wide variety of people and sources, most of whom I trust in their recommendations of arts & culture stuff, that I feel like I should just order the DVD boxed set and be done with it!!!

Good idea???

Great idea. As soon as I have the $$ I'm buying the whole set.

Definately one of the best HBO series ever!! has to be as good as if not equal with the soprano's!! and everybody knows the soprano's is the shiznet!! I started watching the wire from episode 1 of season 1; I watched season 2 from start to finish!! and then I lost my HBO due to lifes hardships; I am not gonna even touch that!! but because of it I have missed all of season 3 until a week ago!!

So I watched season 3 in twp days watching almost 5 hours a day!! lol!! that show will have you glued to the TV!! I have to wait watch season 4 and I won't watch season 5 until I see season 4!! but up till now my favorite characters were season 1 & 2 (omar) he opposed the much larger barksdale crew!! my favorite character starting in the 3rd season is (MARLO) that dude is str8 COLD GANGSTA for real!!

this show ranks somewhere in top the 10 of all time series of all time!! and within HBO series I'd rank it in the top 5 of all-time!! I can't honestly pick a favorite between the wire and the soprano's!! like the OP said you have to watch it and see for yourself because trying to explain this show does it no justice!! alright I've added my thoughts!! just watch it!! you'll see!! alright y'all post this forum after you watch the series!! later!!

From the UK eh? You know McNulty and Stringer Bell are actually Euros? They did a great job changing those accents for their roles. Especially Stringer, he looks/sounds like hes straight out of an American hood.

On the audio commentary Dominic West reveals that the actor who plays Lester Freamon's a Euro too, or was born in America and has lived in London for decades.

The Wire is hard to pick up. I have failed in trying to get anyone hooked on it.

damn did not know that.. stringer bell, I did not like that dude, very knowledgeable but from the start he just struck a nerve with me, character wise I think he is a great actor.. dont recall his real name.. but I had no idea from the show that he was euro, he nailed american slang, sounded form an american hood to me as well..

Mcnulty is a euro?? I could tell he had an accent of some sort but couldn't tell from what dialect.. he did a marvelous job, he was one of my favorite characters from season 1 - 4.. still haven't gotten my hands on 5 yet.. pissed!!

I don't know why, if peeps like the soprano's they would like the wire just as much I bet.. I think its cuz if you haven't followed from season 1 episode 1 or atleast the 1ST episode of every season and watched from week to week its hard to follow whats going on.. if you just watch a episode here and there it wouldn't make any sense.. I have been hooked, addicted, mesmerized, and live by the wire, lol, I think the wire is my favorite show of ALL TIME!! :hatsoff:

I really like the thematic element they try to pull off, where each season has a different setting, and major characters become minor and minor characters become major, like how Prop Joe has like two scenes in the first season but he's a serious character by the end. I also really like how each character has conflicted motivations and there isn't a single one-dimensional character in the series, either on the side of the cops or the criminals.

As for the Euros, McNulty's accent always sounded messed up to me. Stringer Bell's accent is amazing considering he was born in London.

I would have to agree with you.. season 1 and 2 my favorite character was OMAR even though he was fruity... I had a disliking toward the barksdale crew from jump, I liked wallace and he gets got.. bodie was cool, wee-bey, poot, slim charles they were cool.. season 3 to current MARLO is the MF'er!! man (MARLO) and his crew had me sittin on needles trying figure out what he was gonna do.. truly a master piece of acting, although he was a man of few words in character as MARLO he was scary as hell!! although I do have to admit I didn't care for snoop to boyish (a little unrealistic? :dunno:) and I didn't like (FRUIT << he was a punk ass to me) other then those two, MARLO's crew was scary!!

I really didn't have a problem with Mcnulties accent.. he sounded fine to me not european, but not quite american either I can't really explain it, like I said he was one of my fave's as well, bunk was hilarious.. and stringer sounded american as they come IMO.. he aced being american..

I apologize for carring on... don't get a chance to talk wire to much with anybody.. lol.. :hatsoff:
